The University Archives Reference Collection, General Reference subgroup, contains brochures, clippings, correspondence and memoranda, news releases, programs, publications, reports, speeches, and related archival material concerning a variety of items relating to the University. This is an artificial collection and is maintained by Special Collections staff. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. As of 2007, N.C. State had a student body of nearly 30,000, nearly two thousand faculty, and research and program expenditures of over $440 million. Less

The North Carolina State University, University Archives Reference Collection, University COVID-19 Collection contains mostly NC State University websites about policies, rules, regulations, and general information regarding the spread of coronavirus on campus. There are also websites about NC State from local news channels and newspapers and some documents and PDF files created by NC State. There are also emails sent to the campus community as well as emails specifically sent to library employees. University websites (particularly https://www.ncsu.edu/coronavirus) were the primary means of communication from university leadership during this time. Topics include university policies on campus closure and reopening, controlling the spread of COVID-19, quarantining, testing, vaccine availability, masks and other personal protective equipment, remote work and classes, and mental health and wellbeing. Also included are scientific articles from NC State faculty about different facets of the pandemic, including effects on the supply chain, the economy, and food safety. Materials range in date from March 2020 to July 2022. The coronavirus pandemic had a dramatic effect on NC State University beginning in spring of 2020. An unprecedented closure of campus forced classes online and most faculty and staff to work remotely. Policies and procedures changed quickly as campus adapted to the virus in terms of testing, quarantining, sanitizing, face covering, vaccinations, and social distancing. COVID-19 had a huge impact on the day to day operations of campus from spring of 2020 through 2022. Lasting impacts persist as the virus continues to circulate. Less

The Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, 1924-2017, document the professional activities of landscape architect Richard C. Bell. The collection consists of landscape plans and planting details, prospective elevations, technical drawings, and web content, as well as associated architecture plans created by partnering architectural firms. A small number of project files, which document both residential and public spaces, are also found in the collection. Bell’s projects include private residences, subdivision developments, municipal and civic structures, various businesses, and some two dozen college and universities. Richard C. (Richard Chevalier) Bell (1928- ), a native of Manteo, N.C., received a degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University's College of Design (then, the North Carolina State College School of Design) in 1950. Afterwards, he apprenticed under Simonds & Simonds of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frederick B. Stresau of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the age of 21, he became the youngest designer to receive the Prix de Rome, allowing him to study in Europe for two years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 1954, Bell became a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and he was elected to Fellowship in the organization in 1980. In 1955, Bell founded his first firm in Raleigh, N.C., and for many years operated the business from its award-winning office space, Water Garden Office Park. His son-in-law Dennis Glazener worked for the firm, and eventually became a partner. Bell retired in 2007. Less

The Robert Eugene Messick Papers, 1966-1970, contains documents written by Robert Eugene Messick. Included is his undergraduate thesis on a unified graphic system for the various campus documents and bulletins at North Carolina State College. The collection also contains two reports published by Messick. The first is entitled "The Gray Area Report" and describes his account of the events and issues surrounding his early release as Theater Assistant Technician with Thompson Theater. The second, entitled "Death of a Union," contends that students had lost all voice in the operation of the College Union at North Carolina State University by 1969. The final item is a text regarding the state of the College Union that Messick prepared for a meeting before the Executive Committee on the Board of Trustees of North Carolina State University. Robert Eugene Messick, born in 1941, attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1959 to 1966. In May 1966 he received a bachelor's degree in product design, and then worked as a product design instructor and as a technician and designer in campus theatre productions at North Carolina State University. The Roy Samuel Ingle Papers, 1940-1985, contains correspondence and personal memorabilia related to Ingle's life as a student at North Carolina State College (later University), his service in the United State Army Air Corps during World War II, and his experience as a geological engineer. Also in the collection are Ingle's student pilot logbooks, ration books from World War II, photographs, and memoirs. Roy Samuel Ingle was born in 1918 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II and later worked as a geological engineer for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was married to Lois Blanche Eller. Less

The University Archives Audiovisual Collection contains film, videotape, audiocassettes, reel-to-reel tape, and other formats of audio and video recordings of important events on the North Carolina State University campus. Also included are recordings of interviews with prominent University people or visitors to the campus. Materials range in date from the 1930s to 2010. The University Archives Audiovisual Collection contains materials related to the history of North Carolina State University. They cover a variety of events such as speeches, lectures, Chancellor installations, symposia, seminars, and promotional videos. Photographs related to military training and education at North Carolina State University and the military service of people associated with N.C. State University. Established as a land-grant state college, North Carolina State University was required by law to include military training and education in its curriculum. N.C. State University's Department of Military Science and Tactics was introduced in 1894 under the direction of United States Navy Lieutenant Richard Henderson. Following World War I, the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps became the accepted method through which N.C. State, like other land-grant institutions, provided military training and education.
