This collection contains an oral history with Nora Lynn Finch conducted by Gwynn Thayer and Taylor Wolford in July 2022. Included is a full transcription of the interview. In the interview, Finch discusses: playing sports from a young age (particularly with her brother); coaching at Wake Forest University and Peace College; meeting Kay Yow and being hired at NC State; her relationship with Athletics Director Willis Casey; the implementation of Title IX and discrimination against women athletes; her role models; and trans athletes. Nora Lynn Finch attended Western Carolina where she played field hockey, volleyball, basketball, and tennis. She received a BS in Education in 1970 and Masters of Education in 1971. After doing some officiating, Finch coached women's basketball and other women's sports at Wake Forest University then at Peace College (where she also served as Director of Athletics). After acting as Coordinator of Women's Athletics for two years, Finch became Assistant Director of Athletics, the first woman in N.C. to hold the title. When Jim Valvano promoted her to Associate Director of Athletics, she became the first woman athletics director in the ACC to hold that title and the first at an ACC school to be the primary administrator for men's sports (soccer, track and field, and swimming). The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive, 2003-2018, includes video and audio interviews of computer simulation pioneers. The video oral histories of computer simulation pioneers were funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and were conducted from 2013-2016. The purpose of this grant initiative was to capture and preserve accounts of seminal projects, related pivotal events, and distinguished project contributors from the perspectives of, and the words of, individuals who witnessed the relevant history of computer simulation firsthand. The importance of collecting these accounts is also based on the remarkable degree to which computer simulation has heavily influenced the design of computing software. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive is a part of the Computer Simulation Archive, which was established in 1998 with substantial initial donations of papers and research materials by three pioneers in the field of computer simulation—Robert G. Sargent, Alan Pritsker, and Julian Reitman. The Computer Simulation Oral History Archive includes interviews conducted from 2003-2016, almost all of which were funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Computer simulation was established as a separate discipline of research and practice during the mid-1950s, with many seminal works in the field published from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. Reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the field’s pioneers, simulation encompasses theory, methodology, and practice arising at the interface of applied probability, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering, management, manufacturing engineering, operations research, and statistics. The roots of the computer simulation field are revealed in the broad diversity of current application domains in which the development and use of large-scale computer simulation models are critical to the design, improvement, and operational control of computer and telecommunications networks, financial systems, healthcare delivery systems, transportation systems, and governmental and military systems. The field comprises discrete-event simulation, Monte Carlo methods, combined discrete-continuous simulation as well as hybrid analytic/simulation computer models. It is noteworthy that as the field has matured, it has contributed significantly to the evolution of allied disciplines—for example, object-oriented programming in computer science and innovative resampling schemes in statistics. The Graduate Student Oral Histories on North Carolina Hog Farming include audio files of interviews with farmers, neighbors nearby the farms, and environmentalists about hog farming in Eastern North Carolina. These oral histories were produced for HI 533 Theory and Practice of Oral History, taught by Dr. Gwynn Thayer. The class was held in spring of 2023 and the interviews date to April and May 2023. The purpose of the Graduate Student Oral Histories on North Carolina Hog Farming was to analyze and consider different perspectives regarding hog farming in Eastern North Carolina. These oral histories capture the debate over whether different techniques for treating hog waste are acceptable to the environment and to public health. Robert Cooke Papers contain a 1959 campaign button from Bob Cooke's campaign for student government vice president at NC State College, a 2013 video recording of an oral history interview in which Cooke recalls his life and career, and a 2017 listing of Cooke's publications and unpublished manuscripts and papers, and the Preface to the Directory of The Internet-First University Press, with cover letter, 2019. There are also historical materials compiled in 2022 on the occasion of Student Governments' Centennial. James Robert "Bob" Cooke served as vice president (1959-1960) and president (1960-1961) of Student Government at NC State College. He was active in numerous campus organizations such as Alpha Zeta, the College Union, and the Rules Committee. He graduated from NC State in 1961. In 1966 he began teaching at Cornell University. The records of the North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Office of the Dean contain annual plans, budget information, correspondence, department heads' meetings information, departmental reviews, enrollment data, faculty meetings information, handbooks, publications, and organizational charts. Also included are correspondence and oral history interviews relating to the book Knowledge Is Power, a history of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences published in 1987. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2019. In 1905, the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) first took up the suggestion of creating a dean for agriculture, but only under President Wallace Riddick (in 1917) was the position of dean created. In 1923, following the reorganization of North Carolina State College (later, University), the School (later, College) of Agriculture was created. In 1964, the School of Agriculture became the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In 1996, the School became the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, reflecting campus-wide changes in designation from School to College. Less

The Herb Schaal Landscape Architecture Papers contain sketches, drawings, reports, photographs, digital media, and correspondence from Schaal's career as a landscape architect and principal at EDAW, now AECOM. The collection particularly highlights Schaal's work on large-scale children's gardens, public botanical gardens, planning and design for university campuses, and analysis and design for key infrastructure projects such as highways and energy sites and corridors. Herb Schaal, a native of the San Francisco Bay area in California, is founding principal of the Fort Collins office of Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams (EDAW, now AECOM), a landscape architecture firm. Schaal received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and his Master of Landscape Architecture from State University of New York at Syracuse. He worked in the North Carolina State University Department of Landscape Architecture under Richard Moore, then chair of the department and previously Schaal's professor at Cal Poly Pomona. Schaal's work has included urban design studies; site planning and design for corporate facilities and campuses; highway and corridor work; and re-vegetation of difficult sites and disturbed areas. His specialty is public gardens, including educational gardens for children and contemplative gardens for healthcare facilities. The records of the Office of the Chancellor at North Carolina State University during Randy Woodson's administration contain invitations and cards, congratulations certificates for Chancellor Woodson's installation, the daily correspondence of the Chancellor's Office, and the official website of the Chancellor. In July of 2015, the Chancellor's Office went paperless with all documents being stored in a digital document management system. William Randolph (Randy) Woodson is the fourteenth chancellor of North Carolina State University. He received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in horticulture from the University of Arkansas and Cornell University, respectively. Woodson began his academic career at Louisiana State University in 1983, and joined the Purdue faculty in 1985 as a professor in the Department of Horticulture. Woodson served as head of the Department of Horticulture until moving on to administrative positions at Purdue, first as the associate dean of agriculture and director of the Office of Agricultural Research Programs from 1998 to 2004, and then as the as the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture. In May 2008, Woodson became the executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, his final position at Purdue before being named to the Chancellorship at NC State on 8 January, 2010. Less

The Student Government records contain meeting minutes, agenda, correspondence, news releases, publications, and financial records generated as a result of the establishment and activities of Student Government on NC State University's campus. Of particular interest are documents describing the "Student Rebellion" of 1905 which facilitated the need for student governing on campus as well as records documenting the ratification of the Constitution in 1955 and the creation of the Student Senate in 1969. There are also records concerning campus elections, political rallies and community involvement as well as student "disturbances" on and off campus. In addition, the collection contains publications of student government laws, bound copies of annual records and community service type publications which were circulated among the entire student body. The records also contain digital media related to the Student Government website, as well as archived content of the official website itself, beginning in 2017. Student Government at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) began in 1921. At that time, the group was made up of both students and faculty and was called Campus Government. Following the establishment of the Faculty Senate in 1954, a new Student Government Constitution was ratified in 1955, reestablishing a separate Student Government which included a student body president and governing committees. The records of the Animal Welfare Institute include administrative files of both the AWI and the Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL), subject files on animals the organization works to protect, files on legislation that SAPL has been involved with, files on the work of other animal rights groups, subject files on regional activities, photographs, publications, books, audiovisual materials, and archived web content. Materials of the organization range in date from its founding in the early 1950s to the early 2020's; other materials in the collection date back to the 1930s. The Animal Welfare Institute was created in 1951 as a non-profit, charitable organization focused on reducing the amount of suffering inflicted on animals by humans. The AWI continues to be active in these endeavors today, working to reduce animal cruelty in captive and domestic situations--including farming and laboratories--and also working to protect the rights of animals living in the wild, both on land and in the water. The Michael K. Stoskopf Papers, 1934-2020, primarily contain files related to Stoskopf's research and teaching and his involvement in professional organizations, particularly the American College of Zoological Medicine and North Carolina State University Center For Marine Sciences and Technology. There are also blueprints from his work with the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. Digital photographs as well as publications related to veterinary and zoological medicine, aquaculture, wildlife and the enrivonment are also included. While the materials span the time period 1934-2014, most documents date from the 1980s and the 1990s. Michael K. Stoskopf has worked at North Carolina State University since 1989. As of 2020, he directs the Environmental Medicine Consortium at N.C. State and participates actively in the inter-college Fisheries and Wildlife and Marine Sciences programs. He is professor of wildlife and aquatic health in the Department of Clinical Sciences with appointments in Forestry, Biomedical Engineering, and Toxicology. He is the Zoological Focus Leader and teaches extensively in core, selective and elective courses in the DVM curriculum and graduate courses in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. Less

The Edward T. Funkhouser Photographs consists of color photographs, taken by Funkhouser, depicting the campus of North Carolina State University and nearby parts of Raleigh, North Carolina, 2001-2015. Also included are a few images of Fayetteville, NC, sites (Gen. Shelton statue, Veterans Park, Bragg Boulevard), 2014. Most of the photographs are digital images in JPG format. Edward Truman Funkhouser (1946- ) has been a professor of speech and communication at NC State University since 1977. He has also served as an administrator in the university’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a B.S. from Madison College, an M.A. from Memphis State University, and a Ph.D. from Ohio University. He has been the public address announcer for NC State football and women's basketball games. His interest in photography has resulted in the creation of thousands of images of the NC State campus; Raleigh, North Carolina; and other locales. Less

The James B. Hunt Papers, 1945, 1953-2018 include videotapes, films, compact discs, audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, speeches, news clippings, ad slicks, position papers, advertisement scripts, cue sheets, stickers, buttons, artifacts, and brochures relating to the personal life and political campaigns of James Baxter Hunt Jr., who was a Democratic lieutenant governor, 1973-1976, and four-term governor of North Carolina, 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. The largest portion of the collection is manuscripts, which feature debates, speeches, correspondences, advertisements and personal notes. The bulk of the materials include Hunt’s 1976 and 1980 gubernatorial campaigns, his unsuccessful 1984 bid to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United State Senator from North Carolina, and his 1992 and 1996 gubernatorial campaigns. Also included are materials documenting Hunt’s acts post-governorship, including the establishment of the Smart Start program, the Institute for Emerging Issues, and The Hunt Institute. Not included are any materials specifically documenting Hunt’s official acts as governor. James Baxter Hunt, Jr. (1937- ) was the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1977 to 1985 and 1993 to 2001. After serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1977, he served two terms as Governor, from 1977 to 1981 and 1981 to 1985. In 1984 he waged an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United States Senator from North Carolina. The closely contested race, which Helms eventually won with 52% of the vote, garnered national attention as both sides engaged in negative campaigning. The campaign ultimately cost a combined $22 million, making it the most expensive Senate race in American history to that point. Hunt returned to elected office in 1993, winning a third term as Governor by defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor James C. Gardner.
