Contained in this collection are digital files (audio) for sixteen interviews conducted by StoryCorps and about the NC State University Libraries. In January 2017, StoryCorps, a national oral history program, visited the NC State University Libraries to record stories from students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and collaborators from the NC State campus and across the country. The honor came as part of the Libraries winning the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). In the interviews, people discussed the roles that libraries, and the NC State University Libraries in particular, have played in their lives. The Student Leaders Oral Histories contains digital audio and video recordings of interviews conducted with former NC State student leaders as part of the Student Leadership Initiative. This multi-year program has chronicled the experiences and impact of former student leaders through the collection of video oral histories, biographical essays and digitized images. The 2010 Cathy Sterling interviews contain audio only, while the remainder of the interviews also include video. Interviews were conducted by Genya O'Gara, Jonathan Holloway, Samantha Rich, Kelly Murray , and Todd Kosmerick beginning in 2010. Contains oral histories gathered as part of the Student Leadership Initiative, a project undertaken by the Special Collections Research Center to chronicle the experiences and impact of former North Carolina State University students. The Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf Papers contain materials relating to Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf’s research, professional, and teaching interests. Included are research studies, grants, animal patient records, lab tests, organizational materials, veterinary medicine course materials, publications, born-digital content, and some personal papers. A significant portion of the collection documents Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s research and clinical work in the field of zoological health, environmental medicine, and veterinary medicine. Other materials document Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s professional activities in organizations such as the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM), the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA), the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), and the International Association of Aquatic Animal Medicine (IAAAM), among others. The remainder of the collection contains papers highlighting her role as faculty member for the NC State University, College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. The collection ranges in date from 1968 to 2017. Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf is well-known for her role as the first female veterinarian at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and the first full time female faculty member specializing in zoological medicine in North America. In 1990, Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf joined the NC State University CVM faculty in the Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. During her tenure at the CVM, she co-founded and directed the country’s first three-year residency in zoological medicine. As of 2016, she is a research professor with NC State University's Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology program, an intercollegiate degree program administered by the CVM, the College of Natural Resources and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. During this time, she has also conducted extensive clinical and research studies with an emphasis on infectious diseases, immunology, and environmental medicine, specifically relating to aquatic animal, feline, amphibian, and avian populations. Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf has quite an extensive role in several veterinary medicine organizations across the country, including the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This collection contains journals, photographs, newspaper clippings, a videotape, and slides, as well as manuscripts of Terrence M. Curtin's memoirs and the history of the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Materials range in dates from 1951 to 2012 with the bulk of the materials falling between 1968 and 2004. Dr. Terrence M. Curtin, 1926-2020, came to North Carolina State University in 1973 to start a veterinary science department in the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was appointed the first dean of the new School (later College) of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University on Feb. 1, 1979. Less

The Greenway Team, Inc. Records contain papers, audiovisual material, digital media, and a website, which document the greenway, trails, and open space projects created by two organizations--The Greenway Team, Inc., (2005-present), previously called Urban Edges Inc. (1978-2006), and South Suburban Park Foundation (1981-2004). Project files contain master plans, in-progress and development plans, reports, designs, maps, correspondence, notes, company records, newsletters, magazines, informational pamphlets, book publishing information, books co-authored and contributed by Robert M. Searns, Charles A. Flink, and Charles Little, project presentation boards, and presentations with slides. These documents pertain mainly to projects in Colorado, followed by cities in Arizona, California, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, and Utah. The Greenway Team, Inc., led by Robert Searns and Bill Neumann, has designed numerous greenway and trail master plans, regional greenway and open space plans, interpretive planning and exhibits, and greenway and open space maintenance services for multiple cities in Colorado and eleven states throughout the American West, Southwest, and Midwest. Operating out of Littleton, Colorado, the firm is an active company and is extending its reach into China. The Greenway Team operated as Urban Edges, Inc., from the mid-1970s until 2005/2006. The South Suburban Park Foundation is a nonprofit formed in 1979, which focuses specifically on greenway and trail enhancement and creation in the South Metro area of Colorado. Less

The Tom Regan Animal Rights Honorary Collection, 2016, was initiated by Martin Rowe, who gathered testimonials to Tom Regan's importance to the animal rights movement. Other materials related to Tom Regan's role and significance to the animal rights movement have also been added. The majority of the materials in this collection are audio/visual tributes to Tom Regan. Rowe also generated a script and "live read out" for a planned Festschrift. The majority of this collection was created and assembled by Martin Rowe, a board member of the Culture and Animals Foundation. Rowe is also a publisher at Lantern Books as well as an author. Less

The Tom Regan Papers contain correspondence, research files, drafts, reprints, audiovisual materials, and websites that document the professional career of one of the most widely-known authorities on animal rights. The collection pertains chiefly to the two major intellectual pursuits of Tom Regan's career, animal rights and the moral philosophy of G. E. Moore. Also included are files related to his thirty years of service to North Carolina State University,some personal material, material related to other subjects. A prolific writer on animal liberation and animal rights philosophy, Tom Regan (1938-2017) was professor and department head in the Philosophy Department at North Carolina State University. The publication of Regan's The Case for Animal Rights marked a major advance in the philosophical underpinnings of the animal rights movement. This book brought the discussion of animal rights to new levels of serious attention within scholarly circles. Less

The Triangle Greenways Council Records consists of documents and other materials related to the operation of the organization. This collection contains meeting minutes and reports from the Triangle Greenways Council Board, bylaws of the organization, project proposals, information about properties held by the organization, Triangle Greenways Council newsletters, and documents on related organizations like the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Also included are documents and other materials on greenways in North Carolina and around the United States. Materials date from 1974 to 2023. The Triangle Greenways Council is a volunteer organization dedicated to expanding and promoting the use of greenways in the Triangle Region of North Carolina. Primarily, the Council acquires private and public land through donations and grant-funded purchases for new greenway spaces, to date acquiring and preserving over 750 acres of undeveloped land. Working closely with local municipalities and governments, the Council helps with the placement of new trails and greenway facilities. The Council also implements public service projects, and continues to educate communities through outreach programs like seminars and festivals. Less

The Tyson T. Ferree Drawings and Papers contains architectural drawings, correspondence, photographs, and other materials related to Tyson T. Ferree's work as an architect, primarily in High Point, North Carolina. It also contains a scrapbook of news clippings and photographs Ferree compiled to document his projects, and a log book of his projects with project numbers and locations. Files from two USB flash drives include 49 JPEGs, 11 TIFFs, and 3 PDFs. Tyson Thaddeus Ferree (1904-1948) became a principal architect in High Point, North Carolina, during the 1930s and 1940s. He designed numerous residential, commercial, religious, theater, and manufacturing buildings in High Point and surrounding communities of Thomasville, Greensboro, Archdale, Burlington, Winston-Salem, and Lexington. Ferree was a 1930 graduate of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering. Less

The University Archives Audiovisual Collection contains film, videotape, audiocassettes, reel-to-reel tape, and other formats of audio and video recordings of important events on the North Carolina State University campus. Also included are recordings of interviews with prominent University people or visitors to the campus. Materials range in date from the 1930s to 2010. The University Archives Audiovisual Collection contains materials related to the history of North Carolina State University. They cover a variety of events such as speeches, lectures, Chancellor installations, symposia, seminars, and promotional videos. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Design Photographs, 1930-1997, mainly includes photographs of faculty, staff, and students; general photographs of academic life within the College of Design; photographs of exhibits, displays, and specific art, architecture, landscape architecture, and industrial design projects; and a few photographs of Brooks Hall. There are also some miscellaneous photographs, publications, and other items. Between 1920 and 1948, North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering) offered degrees in architecture and architectural engineering through the School of Engineering. The NC State College of Design, originally called the School of Design, was founded in 1948. At that time it included two departments: Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Since its founding, the College of Design has expanded to include departments of Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Art and Design. The College of Design is located in Brooks Hall. Less

The North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1978. It admitted its first class of DVM students in August 1981, dedicated its main facility in April 1983, and graduated its first class of veterinarians in May 1985. In addition to its academic program, the college provides on-site continuing education and outreach programs for more than 4,000 clients annually. The faculty routinely participates in continuing education and outreach programs throughout North Carolina, across North America, and around the world. Located on a 180-acre campus in west Raleigh, the facilities at the College are used for instruction, research, clinical service and outreach, and its Laboratory Animal Resource unit maintains more than 25 vertebrate and invertebrate species for these purposes. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Veterinary Medicine Photographs, 1970s, 1983-2012, undated, includes photographs of students and faculty working with animals in farm, classroom, and hospital settings, as well as the construction of the college. The Vegetarian Resource Group Records contain journals about vegetarianism, nutrition, ecology, ethics, animal rights and world hunger. Materials are dated from 1982 to 2023. The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on vegetarianism and the interrelated issues of health, nutrition, ecology, ethics, and world hunger. In addition to publishing the Vegetarian Journal, VRG produces and sells cookbooks, other books, pamphlets, and article reprints. Less

The Virginia Handley Papers consist of a wide range of documents and publications, as well as a few audio-visual materials and artifacts, pertaining to animal advocacy, animal rights organizations and animal welfare issues. The collection includes materials relating to animal protection legislation, especially in California; numerous animal rights organizations; and activist issues relevant to specific animal groups. Many of the items pertain to issues in California, where Handley lobbied for animal rights in Sacramento beginning in the 1970s. Virginia Handley (1946-2014) was a prominent animal advocate and animal rights activist in California, and was credited as one of the best animal activists in the state. In 1970, she and her mother Grace helped co-found Animal Switchboard, an information hotline on animal-related problems located in San Francisco. Beginning in the 1970s, Handley lobbied for animal protection laws in California and is credited for many of the state's present laws. She also coordinated the Fund for Animals based in San Francisco. When the Fund merged with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in 2005, she continued as California lobbyist for HSUS. In 1980, Handley founded PawPAC, California's Political Action Committee for Animals for which she served on its board until her death. Less

The collection of Voorhees & Everhart Architectural Drawings, 1952-1963, of the High Point Friends Meeting House contains original architectural drawings (as well as scans) of the Georgian Revival-style High Point Friends Meeting House in High Point, North Carolina. Louis Francis Voorhees (1892-1974) was a prominent architect practicing in High Point, North Carolina, during the middle of the twentieth century. In 1938, he formed a partnership with Eccles D. Everhart, another established High Point architect. Many of Voorhees's architectural commissions were in High Point, a city that was experiencing rapid growth because of the expansion of textile manufacturing. The High Point Friends Meeting House was constructed in 1955 and 1956 from a design by a member of the congregation, Howard Olive, who was also employed with the firm Voorhees and Everhart. Less

This collection contains the audio recordings from 1971-1998 of interviews conducted early in Wolfram’s career with speakers of Appalachian English, Puerto Rican English, Vietnamese English, Ozark English, and African-American vernacular English. The collection also features transcripts of many of the interviews and manuscripts of Wolfram’s resulting work on these dialects. Walt Wolfram is currently (2016) the William C. Friday Distinguished Professor of English Linguistics at North Carolina State University. Wolfram has pioneered research on social and ethnic dialects since the 1960s, authoring or co-authoring 20 books and more than 250 articles on varieties of American English. Since joining NC State University faculty in 1992, Wolfram's has concentrated his efforts on preserving the rich linguistic heritage of North Carolina and raising public awareness of its cultural significance. He established the North Carolina Language and Life Project (NCLLP) in 1993, a project that focuses on research, graduate and undergraduate education, and outreach programs related to language in the American South.
