Zobel Papers contain diaries, correspondence, speeches, an autobiography, articles, awards, reports, course information, theses proposals, serials, conference and symposia information, research plans, photographs, slides, artifacts, and other materials related to Zobel's career in forestry. Included are materials relating to Zobel's work on the faculty of North Carolina State University as well as work with the Central America and Mexico Resources Cooperative (CAMCORE), the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for Promoting Scientific Research in the Forest Industry, the N.C. The Carolyn R. Miller papers consist of correspondence, articles, essays, and commentary related to the publication of Miller's "Genre as Social Action." The correspondence demonstrates the struggles and obstructions in publishing her landmark study that was developed from her dissertation in the early 1980s. Today, this article is one of the most-cited articles ever published in the Quarterly Journal of Speech and is considered a monumental interdisciplinary explanatory construct. Also, included in this collection are letters and articles in response to Miller's opinion essay for the Raleigh News & Observer. Documents related to opinion pieces published in the Raleigh News & Observer are about cultural shifts in the teaching of English and writing during the 1980s and their influences on faculty in NC State’s Department of English. The collection also includes Miller's general professional records from across her career, including correspondence, conference materials, and her 2003 portfolio. Carolyn Rae Miller received her B.A. (honors) and M.A. in English from the Pennsylvania State University in 1967 and 1968. After several years of working as an instructor at North Carolina State University, she attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1980 to earn her Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric. Soon after her graduation, she joined the faculty at North Carolina State University and served in different key roles in the Department of English. During her years at NC State, Miller helped with the development of new graduate courses and programs. She is a founding director of NC State’s Ph.D. in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media, established in 2005, and of the M.S. in Technical Communication, started in 1988. In her interview with Master's in Communications, she mentions that NC State's Department of English was a traditional one focusing on the study of literary art. She established the graduate degree programs not only to teach the things she was interested in and trained to investigate, but also to justify courses and attract students with similar interests. The Cyrus B. King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. Correspondence includes letters to and from political figures. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes. The Esther Mechler Papers consists of papers and artifacts documenting Mechler's interest and participation in the animal rights and animal welfare movement. It includes writings by individuals and organizations, as well as published volumes and periodicals. Correspondence about animal or animal rights-related issues and the background work for two of Mechler's animal rights projects are also present, as well as audiovisual materials and memorabilia from various animal rights or animal welfare groups and events. Esther Mechler has been involved with the animal rights and animal welfare movement since the 1970s. An instrumental figure in several organizations, she was a founding member of both the Fairfield County, Connecticut branch of Friends of the Animals, and the national Animal Rights Network. Mechler worked to create and distribute animal protection related audio-visual materials and has also been particularly active in the area of preventing pet overpopulation. This collection contains material documenting the career of Hayne Palmour, North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus of Ceramic Engineering. Included are biographical files, general correspondence, manuscripts, patents, administrative files, and research material generated by Palmour over a period of nearly six decades, from 1948 to 2004. Hayne Palmour began his career at North Carolina State University in 1958, retiring in 1994. During his tenure at North Carolina State, Palmour was active as a researcher, educator, advisor, and administrator. Specific research interests included mechanisms of flow and fracture in spinel structured ceramics, materials processing and rate controlled sintering, and precision digital dilatometry. His focus was in the development of processes for the firing of complex ceramics. His involvement with the international scientific and technical research community and many contributions that he made to the field of advanced ceramics engineering, the defense industry, and the world of nuclear power are documented in the collection. Risley (born 1942) conducted research on the utilization and effectiveness of computer technology to teach physics. Physics education research showed that interactive, hands-on collaborative student environments produce signific ant student learning. Computers enhance this approach. The primary thrusts in this effort included evaluating educational software programs, deciding which tools to use, structuring substantive student activities, implementing student/teacher tasks and evaluating the impact. These activities were then carried out in the new SCALE-UP classroom at NC State University. External efforts included publishing peer-reviews physics educational software, as editor of Physics Academic Software in cooperation with the American Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers. In addition, his group was involved with disseminating in formation about new materials in the physics journals, conducting teacher workshops, and collaborating at professional meetings. Professor Risley was the director of WebAssign, an online homework, quizzing, and testing assessment system that delivers, collects, and grades and records student's assignments. This wide-reaching facility incorporated textbook problems, many different answer types and classroom management tools. It represented a new way of accessing student performance and helps student learn basic physics concepts. Professor Risley passed away in Raleigh on 5 April 2013. Less

This collection contains copies of speeches, talks and papers related to Nash Nicks Winstead's work as a professor and administrator at North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1990. There are as well materials pertaining to his work with the Ellis L. Phillips Foundation, his work for the Institute of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, and his service in the United States Citizen-Ambassador Program. Included are printed copies of Winstead's personal writings: histories of both North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1995 and the North Carolina State University Provost's Office from 1955 to 1993; genealogical writings about his ancestors and hometown of Leasburg, North Carolina, which contains information dating from 1800 to 1960; and a volume documenting the Winstead family pets. Also found are Winstead's personal and professional correspondence from 1959 to 1994. Nash Nicks Winstead (1925-) held a number of academic and administrative positions at North Carolina State University between 1953 and 1990. He began his career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as a professor of plant pathology, and moved on to become assistant provost, vice provost, vice chancellor, and interim chancellor. As an administrator he played a large role in facilitating affirmative action measures, and was particularly involved in the integration of African American students into academic and social programs at North Carolina State University. The bulk of these papers document the corporate activities of the North Carolina Farm Bureau between 1936 and 1999. The North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company, and North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association are all represented in the documents of this collection. Also, a substantial amount of material testifies to the activities of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Women's Committee. Formats include correspondence, corporate documents, publications, financial ledgers, legal documents and transcripts, scrapbooks, photographs, film reels, audio recordings, and miscellaneous artifacts. Organized in 1936 as a chapter of the American Farm Bureau, the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created to be a grassroots organization that would give farmers a unified voice on agricultural issues. Its Women's Committee was established in 1942. In 1953, the North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company was established. Beginning in 1962, the North Carolina Farm Bureau pioneered creation of a group purchase program that was managed by the North Carolina Farm Bureau Service Company. The following year, the North Carolina Farm Bureau further expanded with the establishment of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Marketing Association. Because of the organization's involvement in legal and legislative matters, a Legal Foundation for the North Carolina Farm Bureau was created in 1983. In 1987, a Political Action Committee was also added. Educational programs of the Farm Bureau include the R. Flake Shaw Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders, and "Agriculture in the Classroom." Less

The North Carolina State University Institute for Emerging Issues Records contain conference proceedings and programs; cue books, transcripts, transcribed speeches; speaker biographies and information; photographic materials including photo prints, contact prints, slides, and negatives; publicity materials, press releases and news clippings; annual reports; correspondence; financial information; office records related to the Institute's staff, administrative, and general operations; and computer diskettes. All records come from the Institute for Emerging Issues and are related to the operations and actions of both the Institute itself and the conferences hosted and organized by the Institute. Of the records related to the conferences, a large portion of them are about the Emerging Issues Forum. The Institute of Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University was founded as a non-partisan public policy organization to enhance North Carolina’s long-term prosperity. The primary focus of this collection is Sherr's career as an industrial designer, but it also includes information about Scherr's private life, especially his time in the Army during World War II. The collection contains patent information, drawings, trademarks, pictures, sketches, videos, correspondence, and personal memorabilia from World War II. The collection spans the early 1940s to 2002. Samuel S. Scherr (1923-2002), industrial and product designer, was president of Scherr & McDermott, a design firm working in the fields of industrial, environmental, and graphic design. In 1955 as CEO and President of Scherr & McDermott, collaborating with the International Cooperation Administration, Scherr helped establish the Korean Small Scale Industry & Handicraft Design Center in South Korea. In 1977, Samuel Scherr became the President of the American Crafts Council, a position he held for two years.
