The North Carolina State University Phi Beta Kappa Committee was created in 1977 at North Carolina State University to apply for a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and best known society for recognition of academic excellence and scholarly achievement. The North Carolina State University Phi Beta Kappa committee chairman was Robert S. Bryan and the committee members were heads of selected departments. The committee was active through at least 1994, but may have dissolved shortly thereafter.

MoreThe records of the Physical Environment Committee at North Carolina State University contain meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, annual reports and other reports, committee membership rosters, and other information regarding the activities of the committee in their duties to monitor the physical environment of the campus. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2010. The Buildings and Grounds Committee was established at North Carolina State College in or before 1932 to consider matters related to the aesthetic appearance of the campus. In the committee's early years, this meant primarily considering issues of landscaping and other campus beautification, as well as adornment (and other decorative considerations) for the buildings on campus. In 1970, the Buildings and Grounds Committee was accused of becoming lax in these responsibilities, and was reorganized as the Campus Planning and Environment Committee, with duties to include a more wholistic responsibility for directing all matters related to the physical environment of the campus at North Carolina State University. In 1986, the committee was renamed the Physical Environment Committee. This committee existed until the 2016-2017 academic year, when it was dissolved.

Materials within the collection reflect the changing research concerns of the university. Issues confronted by the Research Committee range from policy creation and funding problems to the creation of web pages, depending on the various time periods. The University Research Committee's records range in date from 1943 to 2004. The North Carolina State University (previously College) Research Committee provides oversight in the administration of research proposals and funding resources for members of the faculty. While committee responsibilities have changed and evolved throughout the years, the management of proposal development (including budget development and agency guidelines) have maintained. The Research Committee has been concerned with the review and development of institutional policy for research, with assistance in obtaining financial support for research and research facilities. Its principal activities include the following: (1)Obtaining information on sources of funds, (2) Assisting individual faculty members in structuring proposals for grants and contracts, (3) Administering special research funds.

It contains the records of the North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also known as the Committee on Safety and Health), including: meeting minutes, monthly reports, records of calls to the Safety Hotline, and information on radiation and laboratory safety. The North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also referred to as the Committee on Health and Safety) appears to have existed as early as 1961. The purpose of the committee was to ensure that adequate safety measures were utilized at North Carolina State University, particularly fire safety, radiation safety, and lab safety. Though all safety concerns were relevant to the committee, these receive particular attention in the files. Safety measures and education at North Carolina State University are now handled by the North Carolina State University Environmental Health and Safety Center. Currently, the center manages the Safety Hotline, publishes the AWARE newsletter, and manages health and safety concerns from general health concerns, to information regarding radiation safety and environmental affairs. Recent information regarding the Safety Center's undertakings and the records of the Safety Hotline are available online.

MoreThis collection contains proposals from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members for North Carolina State University's first official flag. The designs were submitted as part of a contest that took place in 2000. Most are color computer print-outs glued to foam boards. A few of the proposals were hand-colored with marker, and many contain brief handwritten or typed notes from the designer. Flat folder 4 contains two silk-screened flags. In May of 2000, North Carolina State University announced a contest to select the school's first official flag. They received over 100 submissions from students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members. A panel of students, faculty, and alumni chose the top five proposals, and in September of 2000 the Board of Trustees selected the winner. Chosen by a vote of 9-2, the winning design came from Lynn Koonce, a graphic designer in N.C. State's Office of Public Affairs.

Most of the items date from 1987-2001, and relate to the day-to-day operations of the University Honors Council. Items such as university brochures, program descriptions, correspondence, Honors Convocation materials, and program handbooks are included in the collection. The University Honors Council was responsible for overseeing the development and operation of the University Honors Program and for recommending to the Provost policies to enhance academic excellence among undergraduates at North Carolina State University. The University Honors Council is no longer active.

There may be gaps in this collection because these memos have been pulled together from a variety of sources. Memos dated June 2007 and later are posted on the university's website. Since the 1970s NC State University administrators and administrative units have have communicated certain information for wide distribution through "Deans, Directors and Department Heads Memoranda." At some point these became known as "DDD Memos" and later as "3D Memos." While they cover a variety of topics, these memos have been, for the most part, notifications of changes in operations, procedures, and policies.

Materials range in date from 1980 to 2011. The Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service was created in 1998, beginning with just a few programs. It aims to create the next generation of leaders through unique learning opportunities that embody the value of service, responsible citizenship, and ethics. The Department of Music provided educational and performance opportunities for student and community participants through a variety of musical experiences and academic courses. Also included are the records of former director Charlotte Vestal Brown, including her daybooks, correspondence, meeting minutes, and work with the Friends of the Gallery (now known as Friends of the Gregg). The Gregg Museum of Art and Design is a collecting museum at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC that operates under the Division of Student Affairs. The Gregg’s collecting focus reflects the mission of North Carolina State University and supports its academic programs by providing research opportunities for NC State University students and the citizens of North Carolina and beyond. The collection includes, but is not limited to, textiles, ceramics, outsider/folk art, photography, architectural drawings and modern furniture. The Gregg Museum of Art and Design also puts on 6-8 exhibitions per year in its two galleries, in addition to exhibiting work at various places in the Talley Student Center and around campus. In 2013, the Gregg moved out of its previous home in Talley Student Center to the former Chancellor's Residence at 1903 Hillsborough Street. It reopened to the public in 2017.
