The Elizabeth Vann Moore Family Papers contain family history materials as well as extensive records about the day-to-day operations of Sterling Cotton Mills in Franklinton, North Carolina, which several family members managed. Business papers include correspondence, financial reports, and audits documenting Sterling Cotton Mills' founding in 1895, bankruptcy during the Great Depression, and revival in the 1940s and 1950s. Family history materials include correspondence, journals, scrapbooks, and photographs of the Moore and Vann families, which document their experiences from the turn of the twentieth century through World War II and later. Elizabeth Vann Moore (1912-2010) of Edenton, North Carolina, was born in Henderson, North Carolina, to John A. Moore, Sr., and Mabel Vann Moore. Mabel's father, Samuel Cannady Vann (1852-1924), established Sterling Cotton Mills in 1895. Following the Great Depression, the company went into bankruptcy and was purchased by Mabel at auction. Her husband, John Sr., ran the company alongside her brother, Aldridge H. Vann, until John Sr.'s death in 1947. Elizabeth's brother, John A. Moore, Jr., then took over the company until his death in 1982. An historian and historic preservation activist, Elizabeth collected extensive family history materials, including material related to her family's role in managing Sterling Cotton Mills. Iowa State University (Project Vincent) and NC State University (Project Eos) adopted the distributed computing technologies of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Athena Project and Carnegie Mellon University's Project Andrew in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Ellis B. Cowling Papers contain files from 1957 to 2013 that include reports, notes, writings, research data, memos, correspondence, and newspaper clippings documenting Ellis B. Cowling's career. There are correspondence, publications, media clippings from newspapers, websites and magazines, drafts and reports from the Ad Hoc Committee at North Carolina State University and photographs all related to the move of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999. There are also articles, correspondence, grant application materials, presentation materials, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and reports related to Cowling's animal waste research work, pertaining in particular to the Out-of-the-Box Thinking group. Additionally there are articles, background information, brochures, correspondence and news articles related to Cowling's involvement with the installation of Marye Anne Fox as Chancellor of North Carolina State University, the Watauga Seminar and the Faculty Senate. The largest series on the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS) contains annual meetings agendas, correspondence, presentation materials and reports related both directly to SOS and to its collaboration with other organizations. There is also extensive material about the Data Analysis Workshop conducted by SOS. In addition to these paper materials, there are also floppy disks, slides and photographs related to the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS). Finally, there are also audiovisual materials, primarily videotapes and cassette tapes. Most of the cassette tapes contain lectures Cowling gave over the course of a semester to the graduate-level PP [Plant Pathology] 650 course, although it is unclear what the course would have been titled since it no longer exists. Dr. Ellis B. Cowling is a University Distinguished Professor At-Large Emeritus of Forestry and Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University. Dr. Cowling specializes in biochemistry of wood decay, conservation of essential elements by forest trees, diseases of forest trees and deterioration of timber products, role of nitrogen in coevolution of forest trees and wood-destroying fungi, and integrated management of plant diseases. His other research interests include man-induced changes in the chemical climate and their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and the role of scientists in public decision making. Dr. Cowling helped develop a nationwide system for monitoring acid deposition called the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP). His appointment as the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee of Faculty at North Carolina State University contributed to the preservation and relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. This subgroup contains minutes of meetings of the Board of Trustees of the Endowment Funds of North Carolina State University, 1974-2010. Some minutes also contain correspondence, financial statements, bylaws, and other documents. The Board of Trustees of the Endowment Funds of North Carolina State University was established in 1974 by a North Carolina statute authorizing North Carolina State University, as an institution of the University of North Carolina System, to establish a permanent fund that would be administered by a five-member board to include the Chancellor and the Chair of NC State University's Board of Trustees. The records of the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) contain annual meeting programs; photographs of award winners, speakers, and officers; correspondence; financial statements; bound reports; reprints of published Branch history; meeting minutes; hotel contracts; cassette tapes; and a disk. This collection also contains a small file of correspondence and financial information on the Cotton States Branch of the American Association of Economic Entomologists, a predecessor organization. Materials are dated from 1937 to 2010. The Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America includes members from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the United States Territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The organization was established August 2, 1904. A group of entomologists concerned with damage to the cotton crop by the boll weevil elected C. E. Chambliss of South Carolina as Chairman and organized the Association of Official Entomologists of the Cotton Belt, later known as Association of Cotton States Entomologists. The group was active during the ensuing years and was affiliated with the American Association of Economic Entomologists as the Cotton States Branch on December 31, 1925. The American Association of Economic Entomologists merged with the Entomological Society of America in 1953. The name of the branch was changed to Southeastern Branch in 1959. Less

This collection comprises research files for the chapters that Wood contributed to the book Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building, including correspondence, project notes, photographs and photograph permissions requests, interviews with architects (including audiotapes), newsclippings, and some architectural drawings. Also included are publications by Wood as well as research pertaining to other writing projects featuring architecture and design as a central theme. Ernest H. (Ernie) Wood III was an architectural writer for Southern Living and an editor for North Carolina Architect. He has also published articles in the AIA Journal and other periodicals. For the 1990 book Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building (co-authored with with Catherine Bishir, Charlotte Vestal Brown, and Carl Lounsbury), he authored the final chapter, entitled "The Opportunities Are Unlimited: Architects and Builders since 1945." The Esther Mechler Papers consists of papers and artifacts documenting Mechler's interest and participation in the animal rights and animal welfare movement. It includes writings by individuals and organizations, as well as published volumes and periodicals. Correspondence about animal or animal rights-related issues and the background work for two of Mechler's animal rights projects are also present, as well as audiovisual materials and memorabilia from various animal rights or animal welfare groups and events. Esther Mechler has been involved with the animal rights and animal welfare movement since the 1970s. An instrumental figure in several organizations, she was a founding member of both the Fairfield County, Connecticut branch of Friends of the Animals, and the national Animal Rights Network. Mechler worked to create and distribute animal protection related audio-visual materials and has also been particularly active in the area of preventing pet overpopulation. In 1990 she founded Spay/USA, a national referral service for low-cost spay/neutering. Less

The F. Carter Williams Drawings and Files, 1928, 1940-1994, contain drawings and project files for many buildings designed by F. Carter Williams and his firm. Included are blueprints for the Mr. and Mrs. Guy H. Branaman residence in Raleigh, North Carolina, blueprints for the F. Carter Williams residence, as well as blueprints of other residential projects, churches, and schools. Also included are drawings and blueprints for projects at North Carolina universities, including Duke, North Carolina State, East Carolina, and Meredith. There are project files for many of the same buildings, as well as for several state buildings, including the North Carolina Legislative Building, and building at several parks. The FabriCAD Collection documents the activities of FabriCAD Consulting, a company established by Alison Grudier Hardy in the 1990s to provide consulting services to companies in the fashion and textile industries interested in using Computer Aided Design (CAD). Materials in the collection include information on various CAD systems, articles about FabriCAD, CAD systems, the textile industry, company publications, and fabric samples of CAD printing. The Frances M. Richardson Papers document Professor Frances Marian (Billie) Richardson’s career at North Carolina State University as a research professor, scientific investigator, administrator, and instructor in the School (now College) of Engineering. Dating from 1928 to 2000, with the bulk of material from 1951 to 1993, the collection includes reports, proposals, publications, conference handouts, research notebooks, notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and one 16 mm film. The collection also documents Richardson’s involvement in a variety of professional societies, such as the Society of Women Engineers and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, and her professional development outside of the university. Much of her research and teaching focused on topics in chemical and biomedical engineering, and the collection contains research, advising, and course materials related to these areas of study. Frances Marian (Billie) Richardson (1922-2018) was the first woman faculty member of the School (now College) of Engineering at North Carolina State University. From 1951 to 1980, she was a research associate professor in the Department of Engineering Research, and held various teaching positions at NC State University until her retirement in 1992. Her research and publications focused on the areas of fluid mechanics and infrared imaging thermography, as well as respiratory physiology and tracing the flow of non-Newtonian fluids using radioactive tracer displacement techniques. Richardson received a B. S. in chemistry from Roanoke College in 1943 and an M. S. in chemistry from the University of Cincinnati in 1947. Less

Frank Hammond Scrapbook consists of correspondence, biographgical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other documents from his time as Director of Bands at NC State from 1982 to 1994. Dr. Frank M. Hammond was Assistant Director of Music and Director of Bands, the marching band, symphonic band, British Brass Band, trombone choir, tuba choir, and the jazz ensemble, at NC State from 1982 to 1994. He also taught "Understanding Music," "Survey of American Music," and "History of Jazz" at NC State University. Dr. Hammond retired in 1995. The Frank Harmon Papers, 1961-2019, document the professional activities of Harmon and his architectural firm. The collection is arranged into eight series: Project Files, Drawings, Photographs, Architectural Models, Office Files, Digital Media, Harwell Hamilton Harris Files, and Web Content. Project files include correspondence with clients. Architectural drawings include iterations of designs, as well as final construction documents. Photographs document the construction process. Article files concern Harmon’s publications. Models exist for a limited number of projects. Web content contains the official website of Harmon's firm and a Tumblr collecting sketches and other materials by Frank Harmon. Also included in the collection are architectural drawings by Harmon's close friend, architect Harwell Hamilton Harris, and files from Jean Murray Bangs Harris. Frank Harmon is a renowned modernist architect in Raleigh, North Carolina, and attended North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) School of Design from 1959 to 1962. Later, he taught at his alma mater for more than 20 years. Born in Georgia in 1941, Harmon was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. After attending NC State University, he went on to graduate from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, England, in 1967. He stayed in London for 11 years, beginning his first practice there. From 1979 to 1981, Harmon was a visiting professor at Auburn University’s School of Architecture and Fine Arts. In 1981, he established his own firm in Raleigh, North Carolina: Frank Harmon Architect. Since 1992, his firm has won more professional association design awards than any firm in North Carolina for both residential and commercial projects. In 1995, the firm was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize for innovative modern design over a ten- year period. Harmon became an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Fellow in 1988. The Fund For Animals Records includes mainly press clippings about hunting, trapping, shooting, legal testimonies and court opinions, and animal rights. Also included are files about hunting policies in various states. The Fund for Animals, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, is an animal protection organization dedicated to ending cruel practices toward animals, caring for animals in crisis through rehabilitation centers, and participating in building a stronger global animal welfare movement. Some of their campaigns include ending trophy hunting, animal lab testing, and animal fighting. They support improving the lives of farm animals, humane eating, and advocating for captive wild animals, among other issues. Less

The G. Milton Small Papers contain architectural drawings and photographs of projects and structures designed by architect G. Milton Small between 1950 and 1981. The collection primarily consists of architectural drawings of Small's designs, many of which were constructed on the North Carolina State University campus and elsewhere in the Raleigh, North Carolina, region. The collection also contains photographs taken by architectural photographers Joseph Molitor and Holland Wright, as well as Small's writings on computerized parking systems. Two additional series were added in 2015, which include project files and specifications for some projects as well as catalogs and related materials from architectural firms. Milton Small Jr. (1916-1992) was a student of Mies van der Rohe and was one of the foremost modernist architects working in the southeastern United States in the later half of the 20th century. Small was born in Collinsville, Oklahoma. He graduated with a bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and a masters from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied under Mies van der Rohe. In Chicago he worked for the firms Perkins and Will, and Hudgins Thompson and Ball. Small relocated to North Carolina in 1948 to head the architectural office of William Henley Deitrick, at that time Raleigh's largest architectural firm and the most committed to modernist design. Small was recommended for the position by a former professor at the University of Oklahoma, Henry Kamphoefner, who was himself relocating to Raleigh to take over the deanship of North Carolina State University's new School of Design. Small headed Deitrick's office for two years, during which time he produced several important modernist designs, principally, a new clubhouse for the Carolina Country Club, which was the subject of a Life magazine article, "New Country Club" (31 July 1950. p. 70). Small started his own practice, G. Milton Small Architects, in 1949. His first design was a residence which was constructed in 1950 for Raleigh businessman Robert I. Rothstein. Less

The GE Nuclear Energy Standard Safety Analysis Reports Collection, 1994, contains large oversized books documenting standard safety analyses of nuclear power plants. The reports consist mostly of diagrams of various buildings and nuclear systems. Two of the six volumes in the collection are unbound. GE built its first Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR), a Generation III boiling water reactor, at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Japan in 1992 and 1993, however approval had not yet been granted for energy contracts in the United States. The work detailed in these volumes eventually allowed GE to get their final design for the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor approved by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 1997. Less

The Geoffrey Duart McLean Landscape Architecture Photographs and Drawings includes digital files that are scans of original drawings, photographic prints, and slides. The scans were done in 2012; the original photographs date from 1963-circa 1990. These images show McLean's projects on the North Carolina State University campus and Raleigh's Eastgate Park. McLean's work for landscape architect Lewis Clarke and architect A. G. Odell is also included. Additional unprocessed materials (drawings, slides, etc.) have also been added that document McLean's landscape architecture projects. Geoffrey McLean graduated from the North Carolina State University School of Design in 1969 with a degree in landscape architecture. He studied under noted landscape architect Lewis Clarke. His firm, Geoffrey McLean & Company, commenced business in 1971. In addition to being a licensed landscape architect, McLean is also a professional engineer. He has been a member of the Wake County Planning Board and Board of Supervisors for the Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects from 1979 to 1981. Less

Reprints and papers used by George Hepting in preparation of his book Diseases of Forest and Shade Trees of the United States (1971). Also included in this collection are similar later reprints, reprints of Hepting's own articles, Hepting's resume, and a few other papers. George Henry Hepting (1907-1988) retired from the United States Forest Service as Chief Plant Pathologist at the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station in 1971. From 1967 through 1984 he served as Visiting Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and the School of Forest Resources at North Carolina State University. Hepting did research on heartrot diseases of forest trees; the impact of fire scars, basal wounds, and stump sprouts on infection and spread of decay in many species of trees; the mechanisms by which trees restrict the development of decay and discoloration in tree stems; fusarium wilt disease of Mimosa; the role of mating types in oak wilt fungus; fungal discolorations in felled timber and lumber of southern pines; the impact of discolorations and decay on the strength of wood veneers used in military aircraft; rust, twig, and foliage blights; pitch canker disease of southern pines; sweetgum blight; the ineffectiveness of actidione as a control for white pine blister rust; development of practical controls for annosus root rot and for management of nursery diseases with fumigant chemicals; cause of a serious dieback disease of pines in New Zealand; aspects of littleleaf disease of southern pines. The George Matsumoto Papers includes blueprints, specifications, sketches, correspondence, publications, scrapbooks, photographs, contracts, financial statements, and other related architectural records that document the extensive commercial and residential work of George Matsumoto and Associates. The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less
