The bulk of the collection is comprised of Davis's office records and architectural drawings. Archie Royal Davis (1907-1980) earned his architecture degree in 1930 from North Carolina State College and an engineering degree from the University of North Carolina in 1934. He established his own architectural firm in Durham, North Carolina, in 1939. In 1948, he was appointed as the Orange County Schools Architect. This collection primarily contains letters from Azariah Graves Thompson (1885-1963) to his family in Leasburg, North Carolina, from 1905 to 1909, while he was a student at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University); a print bill entitled "Regulations for Dormitories at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts"; a typed transcription of reminiscences written in about 1900 by Thompson's mother, Ella Williams Graves Thompson; and a typed transcription of "A History of Leasburg with Personal Recollections," 1960, written by his sister, Ella Graves Thompson. Also included are photographs and typed transcriptions of the letters and some notes, 1997, on local and family history by Jeannine D. Whitlow. Included are materials relating to Zobel's work on the faculty of North Carolina State University as well as work with the Central America and Mexico Resources Cooperative (CAMCORE), the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for Promoting Scientific Research in the Forest Industry, the N.C. The Carolyn R. Miller papers consist of correspondence, articles, essays, and commentary related to the publication of Miller's "Genre as Social Action." The correspondence demonstrates the struggles and obstructions in publishing her landmark study that was developed from her dissertation in the early 1980s. Today, this article is one of the most-cited articles ever published in the Quarterly Journal of Speech and is considered a monumental interdisciplinary explanatory construct. Also, included in this collection are letters and articles in response to Miller's opinion essay for the Raleigh News & Observer. Documents related to opinion pieces published in the Raleigh News & Observer are about cultural shifts in the teaching of English and writing during the 1980s and their influences on faculty in NC State’s Department of English. The collection also includes Miller's general professional records from across her career, including correspondence, conference materials, and her 2003 portfolio. Carolyn Rae Miller received her B.A. (honors) and M.A. in English from the Pennsylvania State University in 1967 and 1968. After several years of working as an instructor at North Carolina State University, she attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1980 to earn her Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric. Soon after her graduation, she joined the faculty at North Carolina State University and served in different key roles in the Department of English. During her years at NC State, Miller helped with the development of new graduate courses and programs. She is a founding director of NC State’s Ph.D. in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media, established in 2005, and of the M.S. in Technical Communication, started in 1988. In her interview with Master's in Communications, she mentions that NC State's Department of English was a traditional one focusing on the study of literary art. She established the graduate degree programs not only to teach the things she was interested in and trained to investigate, but also to justify courses and attract students with similar interests. Dr. Miller retired as SAS Institute Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric and Technical Communication in June 2015. Charles M. Horton (1912 - 1987) was a furniture designer in Statesville, North Carolina. He graduated from Statesville High School and never studied furniture design in a formal setting. He began his career working with his brother and his father, Fred Horton. As his father's successor, he became a free-lance furniture designer in one of the most prosperous furniture manufacturing centers in the country. He designed individual pieces and suites for manufacturers throughout the Southeast. Among his clients were Lexington Chair Company and Burlington Furniture Company in North Carolina, Pulaski Furniture in Virginia, Trogdon Furniture in Georgia, and Williams Furniture Corporation in South Carolina. King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes. Gerstel during his career as a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University and in the genetics department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Mekhon Vaitsman le-mada) in Rehovot, Israel. The material is international in scope and covers a period of six decades. Esther Mechler has been involved with the animal rights and animal welfare movement since the 1970s. An instrumental figure in several organizations, she was a founding member of both the Fairfield County, Connecticut branch of Friends of the Animals, and the national Animal Rights Network. Mechler worked to create and distribute animal protection related audio-visual materials and has also been particularly active in the area of preventing pet overpopulation. The Gertrude Mary Cox Papers consists of correspondence, diaries, photographs, speeches, articles, diplomas, certificates, newspaper clippings, and other materials relating to her career in statistics, her consulting work, travel, honors received, and the Cox Fellowship which was created in her honor at North Carolina State University. Her writings relate statistics to various subjects, including education, agriculture, nutrition, experimental design, biometrics, horticulture, home economics, and international research. Gertrude Mary Cox (1900-1978) served as head of the Statistics Department at North Carolina State College from 1940 to 1949. She played an important role in founding the Research Triangle Institute in 1959 and held the position of Director, Statistics Research Division at the Institute from 1959 until 1964. In 1949 Cox became the first woman elected into the International Statistical Institute. In 1956 she was elected President of the American Statistical Association while in 1975 she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Less

The Harry Charles Kelly Papers include correspondence, articles, reports, speeches, awards, photographs, artifacts and other items related to Kelly's career as a physicist, science administrator, and educator. Harry Charles Kelly (1908-1976), physicist, educator, science administrator and author, was educated in physics at Lehigh University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1945, Kelly accepted the position of Chief of Science and Technology for the Special Projects Unit of the United States Army. His work helped strengthen cooperative scientific ventures between Japan and the United States. Kelly later worked for the National Science Foundation and, resuming his academic career, served as Provost at North Carolina State University. Less

Included are biographical files, general correspondence, manuscripts, patents, administrative files, and research material generated by Palmour over a period of nearly six decades, from 1948 to 2004. Hayne Palmour began his career at North Carolina State University in 1958, retiring in 1994. During his tenure at North Carolina State, Palmour was active as a researcher, educator, advisor, and administrator. Specific research interests included mechanisms of flow and fracture in spinel structured ceramics, materials processing and rate controlled sintering, and precision digital dilatometry. His focus was in the development of processes for the firing of complex ceramics. His involvement with the international scientific and technical research community and many contributions that he made to the field of advanced ceramics engineering, the defense industry, and the world of nuclear power are documented in the collection. His main interests were tensor analysis, geometrics of generalized spaces, differential geometry, combinatorial analysis, theory of symmetric functions, algebraic cryptography and mathematical physics.
