The records of the Animal Welfare Institute include administrative files of both the AWI and the Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL), subject files on animals the organization works to protect, files on legislation that SAPL has been involved with, files on the work of other animal rights groups, subject files on regional activities, photographs, publications, books, audiovisual materials, and archived web content. Materials of the organization range in date from its founding in the early 1950s to the early 2020's; other materials in the collection date back to the 1930s. The Animal Welfare Institute was created in 1951 as a non-profit, charitable organization focused on reducing the amount of suffering inflicted on animals by humans. The AWI continues to be active in these endeavors today, working to reduce animal cruelty in captive and domestic situations--including farming and laboratories--and also working to protect the rights of animals living in the wild, both on land and in the water. The Argus Archives Records, 1914-2004 (bulk 1970-1990), contain brochures, catalogs, correspondence, legislation, magazines, memorabilia, monographs, news clippings, pamphlets, photographs, research reports, video, and other materials collected and preserved by Argus Archives in pursuit of its goal to be an information source in humane education and to stop unnecessary or particularly cruel forms of animal testing. With particular focus on collecting material relating to humane organizations in the State of New York, Argus Archives actively assembled information on all areas of interest to the humane movement. The collection expanded to include organizations in all of North America and parts of Europe and Asia. Biographical documents of Dallas Pratt and other material such as article reprints date back to 1914. The Argus Archives was founded in New York City by Dallas Pratt in 1969. In addition to acting as a data bank to provide facts to other humane groups with which to influence community leaders and legislators, Argus Archives was also dedicated to the efforts of humane education, supporting change at the community level. The Bernard Unti Papers include publications, news clippings, and writings that document Unti's long involvement with the animal protection movement, especially his activism during the 1980s. There are materials related to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Unti's dissertation research, and his time as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to President and CEO of the HSUS, Wayne Pacelle. The collection also includes Unti's research into various animal rights issues and topics such as laboratory animals, trapping, hunting, cetacean protection, humane education, veganism, and vegetarianism. Bernard Unti, Ph.D., was employed as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from 2004 to 2021. Following this, Unti was hired as Senior Principal Strategist in Communications for the HSUS in 2021. He authored "Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States" (2004) and a number of essays on cruelty to animals as a historical and contemporary issue. In addition to working for the HSUS and Humane Society International, he worked at the Animal Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) in a number of capacities from 1985 to 1992, including the position of Executive Director. The Derby Lane Greyhound Track Records contain photographs, scrapbooks, clippings, programs, operational records, audiovisual materials, artifacts, and various publications. These materials encompass the full range of the organization's racing operations, promotions, and live events. Additionally, the records reflect the organization's particular focus on promotion through various media outlets such as news reports, radio promos, print advertisements, and branded materials. Derby Lane, also known as St. Petersburg Kennel Club, was one of the oldest greyhound tracks in the United States. To establish the racetrack, a group of local business owners purchased a portion of land from T. L. Weaver, a lumber entrepreneur, near St. Petersburg, FL. After constructing the racetrack, financial hardship fell on the original owners, and the ownership reverted to Weaver's lumber company. The inaugural race was held on January 3, 1925. Since then, almost a century, Derby Lane entertained people, welcomed celebrities, and cheered champion greyhounds. Over time, Debry Lane went through technological innovations and modernized the industry. It included the Derby Lane Poker Room offering various gaming options. In addition to greyhound racing, Derby lane hosted a variety of entertainment including concerts, beer tastings, and on-location shoots for major motion pictures. In 2018, Florida Amendment 13 banned wagering on greyhound racing, putting an end to greyhound racing in the state. Derby Lane held its last races in December 2020. Less

The Dietrich von Haugwitz Papers, 1971-2007, contains various materials related to animal rights issues. Included are publications and other papers relating to animal rights organizations. Organizations include People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, The Humane Society of the United States, Animal Protection Society, and North Carolina Network for Animals. The organizations are both local to North Carolina and national. Topical Files contain general information about animal rights, animals used in biomedical research, hunting, vegetarianism, and individual species of animals. Several of the newsletters and news clippings contain materials written by Dietrich and Eva von Haugwitz. A few of the news articles relate to research studies at North Carolina State University which used animals. North Carolina State University philosphy professer Tom Regan, an opponent of animal studies, also appears in several articles. Dietrich von Haugwitz (1927-2007) was a German-born animal rights activist, who lived in Durham, North Carolina. Haugwitz became involved in animal rights in the 1980s, and founded a local chapter of the North Carolina Network for Animals. His wife Eva was also involved in animal rights activism, and served as president of the local Animal Protection Society. Haugwitz worked as a computer programmer/systems analyst at Duke University Medical Center before retiring in 1992. Less

The Esther Mechler Papers consists of papers and artifacts documenting Mechler's interest and participation in the animal rights and animal welfare movement. It includes writings by individuals and organizations, as well as published volumes and periodicals. Correspondence about animal or animal rights-related issues and the background work for two of Mechler's animal rights projects are also present, as well as audiovisual materials and memorabilia from various animal rights or animal welfare groups and events. Esther Mechler has been involved with the animal rights and animal welfare movement since the 1970s. An instrumental figure in several organizations, she was a founding member of both the Fairfield County, Connecticut branch of Friends of the Animals, and the national Animal Rights Network. Mechler worked to create and distribute animal protection related audio-visual materials and has also been particularly active in the area of preventing pet overpopulation. In 1990 she founded Spay/USA, a national referral service for low-cost spay/neutering. Less

The Heidi Prescott Papers contain legal files, lobbying materials, photos, VHS videotapes, cassette tapes, and other materials related to animal rights protection. The largest part of the collection includes materials created by the Fund for Animals (FFA), where Heidi Prescott served as the National Director. Heidi Prescott has been the Senior Vice President for Companion Animals at HSUS since 2021. She previously served as the Senior Vice President of Campaigns from 2005 through 2021. Prescott was the National Director of the Fund for Animals from 1989 to 2005 before this organization merged with the HSUS. Less

This collection contains audio-visual materials (mostly VHS) that were acquired by the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR). AVAR combined forces with the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA) in 2008. The materials all relate to various animal rights issues. The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA) is an affiliate organization of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The HSVMA was established in 2008, and at that time, combined with the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights (AVAR). HSVMA's mission statement is "to protect and advocate for animals while providing leadership and service opportunities that support a humane veterinary profession." Less

The John Goodwin Collection of Materials on Animal Fighting contains books, journals, underground magazines, VHS video tapes, cassette tapes, DVDs, and other materials related to hog-dog, dog fighting, and cock fighting. The largest part of the publications includes animal fighting magazines and journals, such as the Feathered Warrior and the Gamecock Magazine. Also included are weapons used during animal fightings. Materials may contain images, artifacts, and language related to animal cruelty and abuse that may be disturbing to some researchers. John Goodwin joined the Humane Society of the United States in 2000 as the grassroots outreach coordinator in the Government Affairs department. He created a campaign against animal fighting and animal cruelty. He was involved in lobbying campaigns for animal rights. Goodwin testified before various state legislatures and served as an expert in criminal animal fighting trials. Less

This collection contains newsletters, articles, and publications from the Medical Research Modernization Committee. It includes a few other item as well, such as a certificate of incorporation, correspondence and testimonies. Materials range in date from 1984 to 2001. The Medical Research Modernization Committee describes itself as "a national health advocacy group composed of physicians, scientists and other health care professionals who evaluate the benefits, risks and costs of different health care and medical research methods and technologies." The Melanie Sorrell Papers contain pamphlets, newsletters, reports, and other literature dating from 1986 to 2001, all about containing information about animals at laboratories or used in research, most published by organizations invested in arguing for or against the use of animals in research. Until around 2010, Melanie (Rembert) Sorrell, DVM, MS, was the assistant director of Labratory Animal Resource at NC State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Less

Clippings, tear sheets, reprints, offprints, reports, newsletters, copies of articles from magazines and newspapers, and other printed, typescript, or photocopied items compiled by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), from their earliest days through 2001. Among the subjects included are smuggling and poaching, genetic engineering, drug testing, pest control experimentation, alternatives to animal testing, xenografts, transplants, and military use of animals for wound experimentation. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was established in 1980 with offices in Norfolk, Virginia. The organization now extends throughout the world with affiliates in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, India, Italy, Greece, and Australia. Since its establishment it has worked to effect major changes in the treatment of animals by bringing together members of the scientific, judicial, and legislative communities. Less

The Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Records is a collection of documents and collected material from the Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PsyETA from 1981 to 2008. There is some material from 1926 in the folder for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and various materials from 2009 and 2013. There are materials that relate to the administration of the organization itself as well as various campaigns they coordinated with, people they collaborated with, papers or lectures, and various educational endeavors. Much of the material was created by Kenneth Shapiro, the President of the Board of Directors, and included are his papers, lectures, and articles published in various journals and magazines. In 2005 the organization changed its name to Society & Animals Forum as documented in the third series. Less

The Ron Scott Animal Rights Videotape Collection contains Scott's videotape footage of animal rights events and cruelty to animals. Scott shot a portion of the footage at several Culture and Animal Foundation festivals in Raleigh, N.C. Interview footage from animal rights cable television shows is also included. Ron Scott was a retired Air Force pilot who also served in the New York State Air National Guard. During the 1980s and 1990s, he videotaped hundreds of hours of footage at conferences, meetings, demonstrations, and protests related to various animal rights issues. He also traveled throughout the United States and Europe videotaping cruelty to animals and animal sanctuaries. Less

The Vegetarian Resource Group Records contain journals about vegetarianism, nutrition, ecology, ethics, animal rights and world hunger. Materials are dated from 1982 to 2023. The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on vegetarianism and the interrelated issues of health, nutrition, ecology, ethics, and world hunger. The Virginia Handley Papers consist of a wide range of documents and publications, as well as a few audio-visual materials and artifacts, pertaining to animal advocacy, animal rights organizations and animal welfare issues. The collection includes materials relating to animal protection legislation, especially in California; numerous animal rights organizations; and activist issues relevant to specific animal groups. Many of the items pertain to issues in California, where Handley lobbied for animal rights in Sacramento beginning in the 1970s. Virginia Handley (1946-2014) was a prominent animal advocate and animal rights activist in California, and was credited as one of the best animal activists in the state. In 1970, she and her mother Grace helped co-found Animal Switchboard, an information hotline on animal-related problems located in San Francisco. Beginning in the 1970s, Handley lobbied for animal protection laws in California and is credited for many of the state's present laws. She also coordinated the Fund for Animals based in San Francisco. When the Fund merged with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in 2005, she continued as California lobbyist for HSUS. In 1980, Handley founded PawPAC, California's Political Action Committee for Animals for which she served on its board until her death. Less
