These records document the architectural projects of Ballard, McCredie Associates from its beginning in 1955 until its dissolution in 1998. They consist primarily of architectural drawings, project files, photographs and slides. The commissions include primary and secondary schools, churches, banks, state and federal research laboratories and offices, and university buildings. The records survey 70 selected projects of the approximately 320 projects designed and constructed by the firm. In 1955, architect Jesse M. Page founded an architectural firm in Raleigh, North Carolina under the name Jesse M. Page & Associates. From its beginning, the small firm was involved in the design and construction of many educational and institutional facilities. Their numerous educational projects include primary and secondary schools throughout central and eastern North Carolina, often reflecting the different goals and needs required of rural and urban schools. Ballard, McCredie Associates also worked on many projects reflecting the rapid pace and change of scientific research during the late twentieth century. Their commissions parallel this change with the needs of educational and federal institutions to keep pace with new technologies. Restoration commissions were also part of their work. The Mary Yarbrough Papers (1825-2012) contains a variety of materials including correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts, most of which document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

The records of John Tyler Caldwell’s administration in the Office of the Chancellor at North Carolina State College (later, University) include correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, minutes, and other administrative papers. Topics include capital improvements, the building of Carter (later Carter-Finley) Stadium, the name change from State College to North Carolina State University, the status of African Americans and women on campus, and student unrest regarding the Vietnam War. Materials range in date from 1959 to 1975. After serving as President of the University of Arkansas from 1952-1959, John Tyler Caldwell accepted the chancellorship at North Carolina State College (later, North Carolina State University) and remained chancellor from 1959 to 1975. After retiring, Caldwell taught political science and education courses at North Carolina State University until 1985, and was president of the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Research (1975-1982). Under his leadership, the student and faculty population nearly doubled, the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics was established, and for the first time the university offered a full range of degree programs in the humanities and social sciences.
