The Jasper Leonidas Stuckey Papers contain publications, personal and professional correspondence, research notes, newspaper clippings, maps, and a rock sample. There are several publications in the field of geology, and research in the area of salt deposits in North Carolina. The personal materials document Stuckey's interest in farming and include items generated by both Stuckey and the United States Department of Agriculture during World War II which illustrate the problems, goals, and difficulties of farm management and food production during the war. The professional records contain correspondence, reprints, information on salt research, correspondence concerning Stuckey's term as State Geologist of North Carolina, and a paper by Dr. W. J. McCoughey on thermochemical mineralogy (1935). The published papers contain maps and papers. Jasper L. Stuckey was a geologist, educator, farmer, and consultant. He was born in Princeton, North Carolina, on 24 July 1891 and graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1918 and earned an M.A. in Geology in 1920. He served briefly in the United States Army in France, seeing combat in the Argonne Forest. Stukey received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1924 and became the State Geologist of North Carolina, serving 1925-1926 and 1940-1965. He became professor of Geology at North Carolina State College in 1926 and served as head of the Department of Geology from 1927 until 1957. Less

The Jean Anderson Cookbooks collection contains cookbooks written or co-written by Jean Anderson from 1965-2019. The cookbooks include recipes for a variety of foods including desserts and Southern dishes. There is one non-cookbook included in this collection and it is a history book about Prince Henry the Navigator. Jean Anderson was a well-known journalist, food writer, and cookbook author (1929-2023). She was born in 1929 in Chapel Hill, NC. She wrote and co-wrote several cookbooks throughout her lifetime. She studied Food Chemistry and Nutrition at Cornell University and then got her Master's in Journalism from Columbia University. She was a food editor for newspapers and magazines, including Family Circle and Food and Wine. She authored thirteen cookbooks and co-wrote seventeen. She was also a four time winner of of the Tastemaker and International Association of Cooking Professionals awards. Less

This collection documents Jehu Dewitt Paulson's career as an artist and educator and contains drawings, paintings, prints, plates, photographs and illustrations for published and unpublished manuscripts. The Personal files include Paulson's application for a Guggenheim Fellowship (1934), photographs of Paulson and his family, certificates of memberships to various societies and fraternities, a curriculum vitae, and notes from his college years. The North Carolina State College series includes class notes, a partial history of the Department of Architecture, course materials and notes on the appreciation of paintings. The Building Images subseries contains photographs, pencil sketches and plates of various campus buildings, including Memorial Tower, Primrose Hall, and Pullen Hall. Files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.) comprise another series. The Writings, Research and Inventions series contains identifications of paintings (by painter and subject), correspondence regarding the identification process, and published writings, including The Exterior Form of the Solitary Atom (1952), and unpublished manuscripts ("Appreciation of Painting," "Escape from Atlantis," and "People Makers, a Fantasy of Evolution"). Among the inventions are plans for an elevated storage tower and for an improved internal combustion rotary motor. Also included in this series are subject files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.). The Paintings, Sketches, Drawings, and Designs series comprise a good representation of Paulson's original artwork. This series also contains drawings and related papers on The Forms of the Elementary Atoms and The Periodic Law. The Photographic series contains undated photos of various atoms and elements. The Family Papers series contains a printed book on family history. The Jerome Kohl Papers contains paper records, photographs, and video tapes from 1942 to 1995 that detail Kohl's long career in the evolving fields of nuclear energy and technology transfer. Reference and lecture materials show the intellectual milieu in which Kohl was immersed. His publications demonstrate the way he synthesized that information and his own research into the kinds of ideas that engineering and science education journals found publishable. Documents relating to the contracts and consultancy work he undertook reflect both his and the nuclear industry's research interests, as well as the manner in which a scientist went about obtaining money and support from the 1950s to the early 1990s. The collection also sheds light on the peacetime uses of nuclear power in general, as well as the people and state and federal agencies involved in its forward movement and regulation. In addition, it shows the development of North Carolina State University's Nuclear Engineering department and its extension program. Other items of interest include the large group of photographs and other materials from Tracerlab from the early 1950s through the 1960s; and an assortment of material on the Sierra Club on both the national and local levels, especially relating to its positions on energy policy. The Joe Cox Papers contain correspondence, photographs, newspaper and other materials documenting the life of Joe Cox, an artist and professor for the North Carolina State University School of Design. The collection also includes slides of his artistic works, sketches spanning his entire creative lifetime, and some materials relating to his service in the United States Air Force during the second World War. Joseph H. Cox (1915-1997) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and studied art at the John Herron Art School and the University of Iowa. Cox began exhibiting early in his career with entries in the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition in San Francisco and the 1941 Carnegie International exhibition. He also created murals in two United States Post Offices, and received funding through the New Deal. He taught art at universities in Iowa, Florida, and Tennessee, but most of his career was spent at North Carolina State University. He became one of North Carolina’s leading artists and art educators. In the 1950s, Joe and Betsy Cox discovered the town of Oriental, North Carolina, and a passion for sailing. He was one of the founding members of the Neuse Sailing Association, named after the Neuse River which Oriental, North Carolina, sits on the banks of. Paintings and murals by Joe Cox are found in the collections of numerous museums and corporate offices throughout the United States. His images are primarily urban landscapes, and he worked in oils, watercolors and acrylics. Less

The John Brake Papers include research and subject files, Broiler Breeder Research Workshop Workbooks, flash drives, electronic files transferred via external hard drive, and class materials both from Dr. Brake's teaching and from his years as an undergraduate at NC State University. Topics include improving chicken health, breeding, and egg quality. Materials range in date from 1950 to 2019, with the bulk of the materials being from the 1970s-2000s. The materials from the 1950s and 1960s are research papers and publications that Dr. Brake kept for reference. This collection also contains information on NC State University Chicken Education Units and other poultry science facilities. John Thomas Brake (1952-2018) was a member of the faculty of NC State University, beginning as an assistant professor of Poultry Science in 1981. In 2001, he was named William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. Mattox was a talented amateur musician and director of the North Carolina State University R.O.T.C. Glee Club. Less

The John David Smith Papers document Dr. Smith's involvement in the establishment of the Public History degree program at NC State University. Included in this collection are his correspondence, notes, and minutes related to the classes he taught, conferences he attended, and committees of which he was a member. In addition to these materials, this collection includes newsletters, clippings, and articles he retained that were related to his work at NC State University and the background research he did while developing the Public History degree program. John David Smith has taught at Indiana University-Purdue University, the University of South Carolina, Southeast Missouri State University, and NC State University before accepting a position at UNC Charlotte. Prior to teaching, he graduated with both a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and 1977 respectively. By the end of his NC State University career, which began in 1982, he rose through the ranks of the history department to graduate alumni distinguished professor of history and eventual director of the Master's in Public History program, specializing in the Civil War and the history of race relations in the United States. John Erwin Ramsay, Sr., FAIA (1915-1991) was born in Salisbury, N.C., and educated at the University of North Carolina and Yale University's School of Architecture. Following service in the Army, 1941-1946, Ramsay returned to Salisbury to open the second architectural firm in that city. As strong proponents of modern architecture, Ramsay and Associaties were responsible for the design of many modernist residences and buildings, including the Rowan County Health and Agricultural Building, Alderman Studios in High Point, N.C., and the American Square showroom for American Furniture in Thomasville, N.C. Ramsay was also responsible for the restoration of numerous historic buildings in Rowan County, including the Rowan County Court House, the John Knox house, and his firm's offices, a converted early 20th-century residence. The John Fletcher Miller Papers contains materials related to Miller's involvement with athletics, intramural sports, and the Department of Physical Education at North Carolina State University. The collection contains a biographical essay, a certificate, correspondence, news and yearbook clippings, and photographs. The items date from 1924 to 1972. John Fletcher Miller was an athlete who played one season with the Saint Louis Browns (1912). He served as a coach at the University of Missouri, 1916-1921, and Albion College in Michigan, 1921-1924, before becoming the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at North Carolina State College in 1924. He served as the head of the Physical Education Department and the Director of Intramural Sports from 1924 to 1956. He was also the University's Director of Athletics and the President of the North Carolina Physical Education Association. The Miller Fields on the N.C. State campus are named for him. Less

The John Goodwin Collection of Materials on Animal Fighting contains books, journals, underground magazines, VHS video tapes, cassette tapes, DVDs, and other materials related to hog-dog, dog fighting, and cock fighting. The largest part of the publications includes animal fighting magazines and journals, such as the Feathered Warrior and the Gamecock Magazine. Also included are weapons used during animal fightings. Materials may contain images, artifacts, and language related to animal cruelty and abuse that may be disturbing to some researchers. John Goodwin joined the Humane Society of the United States in 2000 as the grassroots outreach coordinator in the Government Affairs department. He created a campaign against animal fighting and animal cruelty. He was involved in lobbying campaigns for animal rights. Goodwin testified before various state legislatures and served as an expert in criminal animal fighting trials. Less

The John Kessel Collection of Science Fiction Magazines contains issues from various publications of science fiction. Included in this collection are several stories by Dr. John Kessel as well as other noteworthy authors like Isaac Asimov, Orson Scott Card, George R. R. Martin, and Ursula K. LeGuin. Materials range in date from 1951 to 2011. Dr. John Kessel is an emeritus professor of creative writing and American literature at North Carolina State University. A winner of the Nebula Award, the Theodore Sturgeon Award, the Locus Award, the Shirley Jackson Award, and the James Tiptree, Jr. Award, Kessel has taught at NC State University since 1982. Dr. Kessel helped organize and served as the first director of the university's Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing. Less

The John M. Parker Papers contain correspondence, project outlines and reports, and newspaper clippings. Materials range in date from 1940 to 1994. Dr. John "Jack" Mason Parker, III, was born September 6, 1906 in Owego, New York. He earned his undergraduate degree, as well as a masters degree and Ph.D. in Geology from Cornell University in 1933 and 1935 respectively. Dr. Parker first worked for N.C. State University (then State College) from 1935 to 1942. He then worked for the United States Geological Survey in Washington, D.C., before rejoining State College as an associate professor of Geology in 1946. He retired from N.C. State in 1972 and died on April 25, 1995. Less

The John M. Riddle microfilm and papers include Professor Riddle's research materials from the 1960s to the present. The majority of these materials are microfilms of ancient lapidary texts produced by university libraries and museums from various parts of the world. John M. Riddle (1937- ) is a historian specializing in the history of medicine who received his B.A. at Lenoir Rhyne College and his M.A. and doctorate degree at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
