The Thomas S. Elleman Papers contains correspondence, lecture notes, research articles, journals, publications, annual reports, slides, and transparencies related to nuclear engineering and radiation. Materials are dated 1958 to 2005. Thomas S. Elleman (1931-2010) attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He then accepted an Ames Laboratory Research Fellowship through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1957. In his first professional position, at Battelle Memorial Institute, a contract research laboratory in Columbus, Ohio, he worked on nuclear fuel development, radioisotopes applications, and radiation effects. He departed Battelle in 1964 as Associate Head of the Chemical Physics Department to become Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Less

The Tobacco Science Research Conference Papers (1947-2008) contain conference programs, proceedings, attendee lists, correspondence, and notes about conferences for tobacco industry researchers and workers. It also includes materials related to nominations for the Philip Morris Award, given out at the Tobacco Science Research Conference. For most conferences, a program and proceedings are available. For some, more extensive materials, including correspondence, abstract drafts, and MS notes are also included. The collection includes a few photographs, some photographic slides, and digital media in the form of numerous 3.5" floppy disks, and a few 5.25" disks and CD-ROMs. The digital media likely contains drafts of abstracts and/or papers that were later published in the conference proceedings. The Tobacco Chemists' Research Conferences began in 1947 and has met annually since then. In 1998 it became the Tobacco Science Research Conference. A separate conference, the Tobacco Workers' Conference, began in the 1940s (perhaps 1941, based on the conference numbers), and meets biannually. Less

The Tom Regan Papers contain correspondence, research files, drafts, reprints, audiovisual materials, and websites that document the professional career of one of the most widely-known authorities on animal rights. The collection pertains chiefly to the two major intellectual pursuits of Tom Regan's career, animal rights and the moral philosophy of G. E. Moore. Also included are files related to his thirty years of service to North Carolina State University,some personal material, material related to other subjects. A prolific writer on animal liberation and animal rights philosophy, Tom Regan (1938-2017) was professor and department head in the Philosophy Department at North Carolina State University. The publication of Regan's The Case for Animal Rights marked a major advance in the philosophical underpinnings of the animal rights movement. The Tyson T. Ferree Drawings and Papers contains architectural drawings, correspondence, photographs, and other materials related to Tyson T. Ferree's work as an architect, primarily in High Point, North Carolina. It also contains a scrapbook of news clippings and photographs Ferree compiled to document his projects, and a log book of his projects with project numbers and locations. Files from two USB flash drives include 49 JPEGs, 11 TIFFs, and 3 PDFs. Tyson Thaddeus Ferree (1904-1948) became a principal architect in High Point, North Carolina, during the 1930s and 1940s. He designed numerous residential, commercial, religious, theater, and manufacturing buildings in High Point and surrounding communities of Thomasville, Greensboro, Archdale, Burlington, Winston-Salem, and Lexington. This collection consists of surface weather observations recorded by the Weather Bureau in Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1887 to 1972. Barometric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind, clouds, precipitation, dew point, frosts, and general weather observations were compiled monthly. For some years, daily records and annual summaries are included. Occasionally, newspaper clippings have been pasted into the volumes. Less

This collection contains only two handbooks: Hand Book for The General Simulation Program, Volume 1, by K. D. Tocher, D. G. Owen, R. A. Cuninghame-Green (1959) and Handbook of the General Simulation Program, Volume I (revised) by K. D. Tocher (1960). K. D. Tocher (1921-1981) was a computer scientist who contributed to the field of computer simulation. He earned degrees from University College London (1941) and the University of London (1946) and the Imperial College London (1952). He worked for United Steel Companies and developed the first discrete-event simulation package, the General Simulation Program (GSP). He was a professor of operational research at the University of Southampton and was awarded the silver medal of the Operational Research Society in 1967. The North Carolina Agricultural Extension and Research Services Photograph collection includes photographs and negatives relating to areas of animal husbandry, animal science, the agriculture school, 4-H Youth Development clubs, forest resources, crop and soil science, the extension service, insect management, and farm forestry. While each program has its own distinctions, all are involved in the research and education of North Carolina individuals, families, and communities. Programs in animal husbandry was established in the 1920s and later became the Department of Animal Science. Sections within Animal Science that are part of the Cooperative Extension Service include: animal husbandry, dairy extension, swine husbandry, and horse husbandry. Photographs documenting the Agricultural School include agricultural-related courses such as entomology, agronomy, plant pathology, chemistry, as well as student and faculty activities.The College of Forest Resources and Farm Forestry photographs display forestry management and maintenance ranging from planting to logging operations within the state. Farm forestry photographs represent extension and individual farms, farm equipment, breeds of farm animals, as well as timber management.The Extension Service photograph collection highlight conference meetings, fairs, farms and homes, home demonstrations, research stations, and goodwill missions to Europe and Peru. The North Carolina Agriculture Extension and Research Photograph Collection combine photographs from Agricultual Information, the Horticulture Science Department, Poultry Extension, Agricultural Research Service, Agricultural Mission to Peru, Animal Husbandry, 4-H Youth Development, College of Forest Resources, Extension Service, and Forestry. These photographs were combined because of similar content. Photographs and negatives within this collection document the history of North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service work with animal agriculture, crops, farm and home management, forest resources, and youth development. The photographs in the Alumni Association subgroup of the University Archives Photograph Collection document the organization's various activities and programs, including awards, scholarships, fundraising, alumni weekends, and homecoming. Homecoming photographs include tailgates, parades and floats, pep rallies, and homecoming queens and contestants. Photographs in this subgroup range in date from the 1930s to the late 1990s, the majority are from the 1950s through the 1970s and 1990s. The majority of photographs in the subgroup are in black-and-white. The Alumni Association of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanics Arts (North Carolina State University) was organized in June 1895, two years after the graduation of the first class. The association has worked from those earliest days to anticipate and fulfill the needs of the university. In 1987, as the university celebrated its centennial anniversary, the Alumni Association sponsored construction of the Alumni Centennial Gateway on Western Boulevard. The Alumni Association hosts various events including Homecoming, Legacy Luncheons, and Class Reunions. The North Carolina State University Athletics Photographs contain photographic prints, negatives, contact prints, slides, and transparencies that document the history of NC State athletics and supporting activities from 1893 to 2003. North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) officially became involved in athletics when it financed the school's football team in 1893, the year after the team's first unofficial games. Other sports were organized by the early twentieth century. All teams began using the nickname "Wolfpack" in 1947. As of 2006, NC State University has eleven men's and eleven women's varsity athletic teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Less

The bulk of this records subgroup consists of black-and-white photographic prints that document the history of North Carolina State University’s physical campus and facilities from 1889 to the 1990s, but it also contains related color prints, negatives, contact prints, contact sheets, and slides. The images show interior and exterior views of buildings, outdoor facilities and constructed items, general campus views, views of the surrounding area, and aerial photographs. In addition, the photographs in this subgroup illustrate people, events, and activities related to the facilities and areas of campus they picture. This includes construction, renovations, beautification projects, groundbreakings, and dedication ceremonies. Some images demonstrate damage to or destruction of buildings, architectural and decorative details, and the moving of departments or items from one building to another. This subgroup also contains photographic copies of three-dimensional architectural models, architectural plans, artists renderings, sketches, floor plans, and maps In 1887, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation creating the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a land-grant institution to provide education, research, and extension services to the state. When the College opened in 1889, it consisted of a 62-acre site with one building. As the university's enrollment grew in the following decades, more land was acquired and more facilities were constructed. As of 2007, the University’s Raleigh campus consists of the Main Campus and Centennial Campus and comprises approximately 2,100 acres of land. Its hundreds of buildings house more than eight million square feet of built space and accommodate a community of over 31,000 students and faculty. Less

In 1917, the first dean of agriculture took office, and the School of Agriculture was established in 1923. The name was changed to School of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1964, and finally to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1987. As of 2009, the College consists of 22 academic and extension departments, and runs the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, the current name of the former Agricultural Experiment Station. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Design Photographs, 1930-1997, mainly includes photographs of faculty, staff, and students; general photographs of academic life within the College of Design; photographs of exhibits, displays, and specific art, architecture, landscape architecture, and industrial design projects; and a few photographs of Brooks Hall. There are also some miscellaneous photographs, publications, and other items. Between 1920 and 1948, North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering) offered degrees in architecture and architectural engineering through the School of Engineering. The NC State College of Design, originally called the School of Design, was founded in 1948. At that time it included two departments: Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Since its founding, the College of Design has expanded to include departments of Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Art and Design. The College of Design is located in Brooks Hall. Less

The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Education Photographs, 1910-1989 includes photographs of students, faculty, classes, research studies, and other activities related to the College of Engineering and Department of Psychology. Courses for training teachers were offered at North Carolina State College (North Carolina State University) by 1903, and the School of Education was established in 1927. After cutbacks during the Depression, the School of Education was reestablished in 1948 and included Agricultural Education, Psychology, Industrial Arts, Industrial Education, Recreation, Occupational Information and Guidance. By 1952, Mathematics and Science Education were added along with the Learning Resources Library. In 1960, the College became accredited through the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and has remained in good standing with NCATE ever since. Less

The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Engineering Photographs, 1915-1993, mainly includes photographs of the faculty, staff, and students of various departments within the College of Engineering. A significant number of photographs documents research studies and laboratory work and equipment. Also included are photographs of award ceremonies, presentations and conferences, campus buildings, and promotional materials. Engineering classes have been taught since the first semester at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University) in 1889. During the next few decades, specialized engineering curricula were developed, and the first engineering departments were formed. In 1923 these were all brought together under the School of Engineering. Subsequent development has resulted in additional departments, centers, and degree programs. The University Archives Photograph Collection, College of Humanities and Social Science Photographs documents the people, departments, and activities of the College. Included in the collection are photographs from the following departments: English, History, Liberal Arts, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Religion, Speech, Social Work, and Sociology. Also included are negatives of the debate team and photographs of the March of Dimes telecast. Established as a distinct college in 1963, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences represents the intellectual core of the university. As of 2009, CHASS is the second largest college at North Carolina State University, CHASS offers 60 bachelor’s programs, 15 master’s programs and 4 Ph.D programs to close to 5000 undergraduate and graduate students.
