This collection contains architectural drawings collected from various sources by Catherine W. Bishir during her research. Some were acquired for a study of Art Deco architecture in North Carolina. The drawings are mostly blueprints or other reproductions, and they date from 1871 to 1996, although most are from the early twentieth century. Catherine W. Bishir joined the NC State University Libraries in February 2007 as Curator of Architecture Special Collections. She has had a long career in historic preservation, serving as senior architectural historian for Preservation North Carolina, senior architectural historian and architectural survey coordinator for the State Historic Preservation Office in the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, and adjunct professor in NC State’s School of Architecture. She was a co-founder of the Vernacular Architectural Forum. Her publications include Architects and Builders in North Carolina and North Carolina Architecture. The Catherine W. Bishir Papers chiefly contain research documentation compiled during the creation of North Carolina Architects and Builders, both for the book and also for the web-based platform, and for other articles and books written by Bishir, including her work on monuments in the American South. Among the files are many photographs of buildings and sites, mostly in North Carolina, organized by county. Launched in 2009, North Carolina Architects and Builders is a reference work that contains brief biographical accounts, building lists, and bibliographical information about architects, builders, and other artisans who planned and built North Carolina's architecture. Bishir is author or co-author of several prize-winning publications, including North Carolina Architecture; Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building; the three-volume Guides to the Historic Architecture of Eastern, Western, and Piedmont North Carolina; Southern Built: American Architecture, Regional Practice; and, most recently, Crafting Lives: African American Artisans in New Bern, North Carolina, 1770-1900s. From 1971 through 2001 she served as staff member and supervisor for the architectural survey and National Register of Historic Places programs in the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office. She then served as senior architectural historian with the non-profit organization, Preservation North Carolina. As adjunct professor at North Carolina State University Department of Architecture she taught classes in vernacular architecture and North Carolina architecture. The Cathy Sterling Papers include correspondence, texts of speeches, reports, clippings, photographs, and artifacts relating to Cathy Sterling's tenure, 1970-1971, as Student Body President at North Carolina State University. Many of the materials focus on Sterling's status as North Carolina State University's first female student body president, as well as her involvement in protest movements against the Vietnam War, which included organizing a campus Peace Retreat. The materials range in date from 1966 to 1999, with the bulk of the materials being from 1970 to 1972. Cathy (now known as Kate) Sterling served as the first female student body president at North Carolina State University, 1970-1971. She conducted a successful write-in campaign with a platform that focused on students’ rights and the administration’s use of student fees. In the Spring of 1970, Sterling married Gene Messick, a graduate of the School (now College) of Design at NC State and director of the multimedia program at Stewart Theatre. Soon after, Messick accepted a teaching position at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Sterling moved to Ithaca to join him after the conclusion of her term as Student Body President. However, Sterling remained active in NC State’s Student Government activities throughout the 1971-1972 academic year. Sterling later returned to NC State, where she graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education. Less

The Central North Carolina Mineral Club consisted of members interested in minerals and mineral shows. The papers from this club range in dates from 1957 to 1970. This collection contains information on mineral shows in North Carolina. In addition, the collection also contains correspondence, a newspaper clipping, membership roster, conference brochures and programs as well as the club's newsletter, The Triangle Rockhound. Less

This collection contains architectural drawings and specifications for the Norman Stockton Residence (1929) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and drawings for two homes belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Dudley L. Simms. The Norman Stockton Residence in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is an example of Keen's Georgian Revival work in Reynolda Park. The collection also contains drawings for the O'Hanlon Residence. Charles Barton Keen (1868-1931) was a Philadelphia-born architect who was known for his colonial revival country homes. He was especially popular in Philadelphia (1890-1912) and in North Carolina (1912-1931). Less

The Charles Dearing Papers contains correspondence, research materials, and data gathered over Dearing's forty-year career. As Director of the Coastal Plain Test Farm in Willard, North Carolina, Dearing oversaw experiments on grapes, strawberries, and bluberries. The collection contains pollination records, field reports, vineyard reports, nursery lists, samples and block notes. Dearing's research was primarily focused on grape research, especially of the muscadine variety. As Director of the Coastal Plain Test Farm in Willard, North Carolina, Charles Dearing oversaw experiments on grapes, strawberries, and blueberries. The Charles Horace Hamilton Papers document Hamiilton's career as professor and chair of the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College. The collection describes Hamilton's research, writings, university career, and participation in professional organizations. His main interests were higher education, population and migration, rural families, rural health care and standards of living, and statistics. This collection also contains a manuscript by the Federal Writers Project titled "Gamblers All," detailing the history of tobacco and tobacco workers in North Carolina. It is believed that this manuscript is unpublished. C. Horace (Charles Horace) Hamilton (1901-1977) taught rural sociology at North Carolina State College from 1931 to 1936 and from 1940 to 1967. The Charles Horton Papers contain photographs, drawings, furniture catalogues, price lists, correspondence, and financial information related to Horton's career as a free-lance furniture designer in Statesville, North Carolina. Charles M. Horton (1912 - 1987) was a furniture designer in Statesville, North Carolina. He graduated from Statesville High School and never studied furniture design in a formal setting. He began his career working with his brother and his father, Fred Horton. As his father's successor, he became a free-lance furniture designer in one of the most prosperous furniture manufacturing centers in the country. He designed individual pieces and suites for manufacturers throughout the Southeast. Among his clients were Lexington Chair Company and Burlington Furniture Company in North Carolina, Pulaski Furniture in Virginia, Trogdon Furniture in Georgia, and Williams Furniture Corporation in South Carolina. The Charles J. Nusbaum Papers relate to Nusbaum's plant pathology research as well as interactions with his students at North Carolina State University. This collection contains Nusbaum's essays, publications, and reports, research correspondence, and materials from his classes. Materials related to the Tobacco Workers Conference are also included. In addition, there are photographs and slides, some pertaining to Nusbaum's research and others to his personal life. The photographs generally date from the 1930s and 1940s. The slides generally date from the 1930s to the 1960s. Items in the collection date from 1928 to 1992, with the bulk dating from the 1930s to the 1970s. Less

The Charles Kahn Papers contains design proposals and drawings, course materials, journal articles, pamphlets, brochures, oral histories, and photographic negatives documenting work of Charles Kahn and his students as well as local architects, including Horacio Caminos, Matthew Nowicki, James Fitzgibbons, Eduardo Catalano, and George Matsumoto. Materials related to Buckminster Fuller and Charter Industries (Geodesic domes) are also included. Items in the collection are described using titles found on Kahn's original files. Charles Howard Kahn was born in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1952, he joined the faculty at North Carolina State University as an instructor in Civil Engineering. He was appointed Associate Professor of Design in 1959. Kahn remained at North Carolina State University until 1968, when he left for the University of Kansas. Kahn's research focused on thin-shell structures and membranes of long-span roofs for buildings. Notably, he designed North Carolina State University's Carter-Finley Stadium. The items included in this collection reflect Kahn's time at North Carolina State University. Kahn passed away at the age of 95 in 2021. Less

Contained in this collection are an NC State decal and football ticket from Charles "Les" Britt's years as a student at North Carolina State College (1950). Also included is a 2017 memoir Britt wrote for his children. In it he recounts his life and career, including his student years at NC State College (later NC State University) and his membership in Kappa Sigma fraternity. Charles Leslie "Les" Britt, Jr. (1930-2017), had a long career in aviation and aeronautical electronics. Working for General Electric, he oversaw the payload of the first successful Atlas missile launch at Cape Canaveral. In 1962, he joined Research Triangle Institute (RTI), where he researched and designed radar techniques, electronic systems, and large computer applications. In 1979, he founded the RTI Virginia Office, and worked with NASA, the FAA, and manufacturers to develop, test, and certify the lifesaving airborne wind shear radar detection system that became required for all U.S. commercial aircraft. He retired from RTI in 2006. Less

The Charles M. Ellertson Research and Study Collection on Typography contains books, serials (including a run of The Association of American University Presses Book and Jacket Show), booklets and leaflets on graphic design, typography, fonts, and graphic designers, and some papers related to Ellertson's work in typography. The collection also includes a set of Merganthaler Linotype negatives from Ellertson's early career. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2022. Charles M. Ellertson (1945-2022), a typographer and typesetter, co-founded Tseng Information Systems in Durham, NC in 1980 and was vice-president of the firm until its closure in 2021, setting type for university presses throughout the U.S. Using Fontographer and later FontLab, Charles created special characters and diacritics for non-Romanized languages; his work enabled the publication of Native American research and literature. Charles was married to Barbara Williams, founder of BW&A Books, Inc., a local book design and production studio. Less

The Charles M. Smallwood Papers document research on water quality. Involved institutions include North Carolina State University, the city of Raleigh, the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Department of the Interior, the North Carolina Energy Development Authority, the Waterworks School, the Water Resources Research Institute, the Water Pollution Control Association, and the national Center for Urban and Industrial Health. Charles M. Smallwood joined the Civil Engineering Department of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1950 as an expert on water pollution. He received his B.S. from Case Institute of Technology in 1942 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1950. Less

The Charles Pearson Papers consist of biographical materials, professional materials, and photographs documenting Pearson's family and childhood, student days at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), and career as a civil engineer in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Charles A. Pearson (1875-1966) was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1894. During a six-decade career, he was first a partner in an architectural firm, then worked for various engineering firms, contractors, and railroad companies, supervising the construction of many highway and railroad bridges, and other civil engineering projects, in North Carolina and the South. This collection contains Charles Wilson Suggs's notes, data, publications, papers presented, reports, photographs, and sketches, primarily on the topics of tobacco mechanization (tobacco harvesters and transplanters) and equipment ergonomics. Born in 1928, Suggs received his B.S.A.E. in 1949 and Ph.D. in 1959 from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), where he then joined the faculty. His research interests were tobacco mechanization and human-factors engineering. He developed one of the first mechanical tobacco leaf harvesters. Less

This collection is made up of correspondence, professional administrative papers, instructional materials, technical reprints, and research reports belonging to North Carolina State University emeritus professor Charles William Stuber, who conducted research in the use of molecular markers that aid in the identification and mapping of corn genes. Most of the collection contains reprints, papers, and articles authored by other scientists and collected Stuber. Nebraska native Charles William Stuber earned a B.S. in 1952 and an M.S. in 1961 at the University of Nebraska. He received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Experimental Statistics from North Carolina State University in 1965 and was a member of the genetics faculty at North Carolina State University from 1965 to 1998. The Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright Papers, 1767-1990, include correspondence, photographs, research notes, transcriptions, and blueprints. Material was gathered by Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright for her study of the practice of building in North Carolina between 1865 and 1945 and includes information on the administration of the grant project, photographs and manuscripts from the book written by Brown, as well as research and reference files used in the project. Professor Dr. Chen-Loung Chen died on November 14, 2009 in Raleigh, NC. He was born on October 20, 1930 in Taipei, Taiwan and received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.In 1972, Dr. Chen joined the faculty of the Department of Pulp and Paper Science at North Carolina State University, where he researched and taught for more than 30 years. The papers of Chester J. Lange, a prominent North Carolina veterinarian, are largely comprised of correspondence and organizational documents relating to his activities with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association). Also included are newspaper clippings documenting his professional accomplishments. Information about the establishment of a veterinary school at North Carolina State University is included, as well as programs from conferences, flyers, and research notes. Chester J. Lange (April 14, 1910 - September 26, 1994) was a prominent veterinarian in Greensboro North Carolina. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell in 1932 and an M.S. degree in biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1938. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served in World War II as a captain in the Veterinary Corps before opening an animal hospital in Greensboro. He was active in the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association), serving as secretary-treasurer and later as president. He was also involved with the Carolina Kennel Club and the Humane Society of Guilford County, and was the recipient of the NCVMA’s Veterinarian of the Year award. Less
