The Robert Phillip Upchurch Collection contains personal and professional papers of plant scientist Robert Phillip Upchurch. This collection contains annual reports, 1953-1965, written by Upchurch for a project at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station, The Development of Principles and Practices for the Control of Weeds in Cotton, Peanuts, Soybeans, Forage Crops, Turf and for the Control of Nutsedge, Johnson Grass and Woody Plants, as well as class notes, 1941-1949, from Upchurch's years as a student in crop science and plant physiology. Robert P. Upchurch's personal military records, 1948-1967, are included in the collection, as are the Upchurch Bulletin, 1980-2006, and Englandia, 1996-1999, family history quarterlies edited and published by Robert Phillip Upchurch. Also included are publications and other materials of the Plant Growth Regulation Society of America, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST), and the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). Robert Phillip Upchurch, 1928-2020, was born in Wake County, North Carolina, on February 9, 1928. He graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) with a B.S. in Crop Science in 1948. He received a master's degree in 1949 and in 1953 was awarded a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of California, Davis. Upchurch was a member of the faculty at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1965. From 1955 to 1957 Upchurch served in the United States Air Force with the rank of second lieutenant. From 1965 through 1975 he worked for the Monsanto Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1975 to 1990 Upchurch was a professor and head of the Plant Sciences Department at the University of Arizona. Less

The Robert Sargent Papers, 1961-2002, include teaching materials, publications, research files, presentations, and data tapes documenting his work as a Professor at Syracuse University and on behalf of the United States Air Force. There are also materials, including conference programs, documenting Sargent’s involvement with the Winter Simulation Conference and other professional organizations and meetings. A list of books related to simulation donated to NC State University Libraries by Robert Sargent and individually cataloged may be found here. Robert G. Sargent studied simulation methodology and modeling at the University of Michigan. After completing his Ph.D. in 1966, he joined the faculty at Syracuse University, where he taught simulation until retiring in the late 1990s. The Robert and Ruth Mace House Papers contains financial reports, newspaper articles, architectural notes and plans, and photographs relating to the construction of the Robert and Ruth Mace House located in Hillcrest Circle, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The collection includes some architectural materials related to Lewis Clarke, the landscape architect of the Mace House, and Donald Stewart, the architect of the Mace House. The materials range from 1959 to 1985, with the bulk of the materials from 1959 to 1965. Robert and Ruth Mace moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1954, where Robert Mace received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following this, the Mace Family decided to stay in the area. They constructed a home at 222 Hillcrest Circle, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they raised their two children, Mary and Tony Mace. The Robert and Ruth Mace House was completed in 1968. The house was later deeded to Robert and Ruth Mace's daughter, Mary Mace. It was rented out for several years, and torn down in 2017. Less

The Rodney V. Smith industrial plant project materials consists of correspondence, interviews, and background materials for a student project on the layout of a gyrocopter industrial plant. Smith worked on this project with two other students, James Newhouse and Jerome Holmes. Smith, Newhouse, and Holmes conducted interviews with employees at Bensen Aircraft, and sent letters to more than 25 companies, including All American Engineering Company, the National Aeronautic Association, the Aerospace Industries Association of America, and Doman Helicopters, Inc. The background materials in the collection include the Directory of Hospital Heliports in the United States and issues of Aerospace News. Rodney V. The Roger H. Clark Papers, 1950-2013, contains correspondence; course material from North Carolina State University and University of Virginia; American Institute of Architects committee files; research notes and materials relating to Clark's books Kinetic Architecture, Precedents in Architecture and School of Design' published reports; project files, which include reduced plans, skecthes and photographs of architecture models; and architectural drawings of residences, office buildings, academic buildings, churches, banks and other buildings, mostly in central North Carolina. Roger H. Clark (1939- ) is a practicing architect and ACSA Distiguished Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University. Clark received a B.S. in architecture in 1963 from the University of Cincinnati and a M.Arch. in 1964 from the University of Washington. Clark taught at the University of Virginia from 1964 to 1969, and at North Carolina State University beginning in 1969. His publications include Kinetic Architecture and Precedents in Architecture. Clark practiced architecture individually and with several firms in the Raleigh-Durham area including John D. Latimer and Associates, Inc., O'Brien/Atkins Associates, PA, and Cannon Architects. Clark has chaired the Committee on Design for the American Institute of Architects, both for the national organization and the North Carolina Chapter. He has also chaired the AIANC Awards Committee. The Roger Lee Jackson Polyhedron Papers and Models (1968-2005) contain Roger Lee Jackson’s calculations and notes illustrating the steps of the math required to compute geodesic domes as well as several paper polyhedron models Jackson made based on the math. The collection also contains some books relating to polyhedra and geometry. Roger Lee Jackson (1931-2014) was a 1955 alumnus of North Carolina State School of Design where he studied and worked with Buckminster Fuller and Eduardo Catalano. To fulfill his ROTC commitment after graduating with a degree in architecture, Jackson worked with the architecture team on the design and construction of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Jackson’s career also included work on hospitals, airports, shops, and university buildings in several different states including North Carolina, Utah, Minnesota,and California. Buckminster Fuller had a great impact on Jackson’s career and life. Jackson designed and constructed many polyhedron sculptures which were inspired by the work of Fuller. Less

The Roger Powell Marshall Papers, 1913-1985, include personal correspondence, course materials, notes, and publications. The collection also includes a number of playbills from Broadway shows and information on Marshall's travels. Roger Powell Marshall (1899-1987) was an educator, author, and North Carolina historian. He served as a Professor of English at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1926 to 1964. Less

The Roger A. Powell Papers consist of materials documenting the tenure of Roger A. Powell as a member of the faculty of the Department of Zoology, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. Included are personal and professional corespondence, publications, course material, photographs, and color films with sound, ranging from 1950 to 2007. Dr. Roger A. Powell's major research interests and contributions have been in animals' home ranges and spacing: how animals space themselves on a landscape, depending on the home ranges of other individuals and on the distributions of pertinent resources. Dr. Powell received his B.A. degree from Carleton College in Minnesota and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has taught courses in Wildlife Management, Mammalogy, Evolution, and Ecology of Mammals and Community Ecology. Dr. Powell has authored many books and co-authored numerous publications on the subjects of Behavioral Ecology of Mammals and Wildlife Management. Less

The Ron Scott Animal Rights Videotape Collection contains Scott's videotape footage of animal rights events and cruelty to animals. Scott shot a portion of the footage at several Culture and Animal Foundation festivals in Raleigh, N.C. Interview footage from animal rights cable television shows is also included. Ron Scott was a retired Air Force pilot who also served in the New York State Air National Guard. During the 1980s and 1990s, he videotaped hundreds of hours of footage at conferences, meetings, demonstrations, and protests related to various animal rights issues. He also traveled throughout the United States and Europe videotaping cruelty to animals and animal sanctuaries. Less

The Ron Sederoff Papers includes notes, proposals, correspondence, publications, reports, paper manuscripts, presentation materials, photographs, subject files, research notebooks, photographic slides, and wood samples related to extensive research, teaching, and professional activities. Included are materials that document Sederoff's role in the Forest Biotechnology Group and the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University. Topics of the materials include DNA transfer in forest trees, lignin biosynthesis, tree genomes, agricultural applications of genetic research, and forest biotechnology. Materials range from 1953 to 2016. Ron (Ronald Ross) Sederoff is an emeritus faculty member for the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He previously served as Distinguished University Professor and Edwin F. Conger Professor of Forestry and Environmental Resources, Associate Member of the Department of Genetics and the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, as well as co-director of the Forest Biotechnology Group. His earlier research interests included mutational mechanisms, gene expression, and chromosome structure in bacteriophage T4 and Drosophila. His interest in large woody plants resulted from studies on the mitochondrial DNA of maize. His more recent research interests relate to studying the genomics of forest trees, genetic regulation of lignin biosynthesis, molecular mechanisms in the formation of the plant cell wall, and gene expression in differentiating wood. He was the William Neal Reynolds professor of sociology and a member of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty for 40 years at N.C. State University. This collection contains research notes, conferences attended, research data collected, surveys, correspondence, presentations and other materials related to Ronald C. Wimberley's professional work. The Roscoe Braham Papers contain material documenting Braham's career, including correspondence (some handwritten), office files, research notes, grant proposals and reports, notes and related documentation from meetings and conferences, class notes, and personal records from 1863 to 2011 with some undated material. Also included are black and white photographs and negatives, newspaper articles, pamphlets, bound reports on research projects, glass slides, slides, film reels, annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) Council Meeting correspondence from the 1940s to 2000 and beyond, and articles and reference material dating back to 1863. The records provide insight into Braham's research on cloud precipitation physics, his engagement with other scientists, scholars, and institutions, like the University of Chicago and North Carolina State University, and his involvement with professional organizations. Roscoe R. Braham Jr. is a pioneering meteorologist, educator, expert in cloud precipitation physics, and visiting professor at North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in geology in 1942 from the Ohio University. Braham completed his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Chicago, joined the University of Chicago staff in 1952 as a research meteorologist and retired in 1991 after thirty-seven years, twenty-six of them as a full professor. Braham has published more than eighty scientific reports, books, and monographs during his academic career. Braham joined the American Meteorological Society in 1945 and served as its president in 1988. He is credited for the discovery of the cell organization of thunderstorms as well as the coalescence-freezing mechanism of precipitation formation in natural clouds. Less

The Roy Gussow Models for Teaching Design include 20 abstract models made from painted metal, painted cardboard, brass, wood, and plexiglass. Gussow created the models in the 1960s for instruction purposes. He used them to teach the vocabulary of the components of 3-dimensions and prompt students to think about form. They demonstrate how an extended point becomes a line, an extended line becomes a plane, and an extended plane becomes a form. These models also were used to illustrate the variety of fluid and dynamic forms that can be constructed using a stable or static right angle. Roy Gussow (1918-2011) was an American abstract sculptor and educator who is most known for his polished stainless steel works. He attended Farmingdale State College, originally intending to become a farmer and graduated with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. After serving in World War II, he attended the Institute of Design in Chicago on the G.I. Bill and received a Bachelors of Science in Industrial Design. He taught at Bradley University and the Fine Arts Center of Colorado College before coming to North Carolina. Gussow was a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1951 to 1962 (tenured 1960). He went on to teach at the School of Architecture at the Pratt Institute, Columbia University, and the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. Museums throughout the country hosted exhibitions of his work and many own his sculptures including MOMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim and the Brooklyn Museum. Other scupltures can be found at locations such as the NCSU College of Design in Raleigh, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., the Tulsa, OK and Harrisburg, PA City Halls, and the Xerox Corporation in Rochester, NY and Tokyo, Japan. This collection contains a book of postcards with pictures of North Carolina State College buildings, USDA Extension Service Handbook on Agriculture and Home Economics, slides relating to tobacco and agriculture in North Carolina, "Tobacco Information for 1966" (published by North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, December 1965), photocopies of "History of Tobacco Extension Program" (as well as an early draft) by Roy R. Bennett, "History of Crop Science Extension," an "Overview of U. S. Tobacco" (9-4-85), and a bound book of correpondence to Bennett on the occasion of his retirement (1966). Roy R. Bennett served as assistant Extension agent in Rowan County, North Carolina, and the Extension agent in Pitt County, North Carolina. After World War II, he joined the Agronomy Department at NC State, where he provided the leadership for the tobacco extension program. Less

The Roy Samuel Ingle Papers, 1940-1985, contains correspondence and personal memorabilia related to Ingle's life as a student at North Carolina State College (later University), his service in the United State Army Air Corps during World War II, and his experience as a geological engineer. Also in the collection are Ingle's student pilot logbooks, ration books from World War II, photographs, and memoirs. Roy Samuel Ingle was born in 1918 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II and later worked as a geological engineer for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was married to Lois Blanche Eller. Less

The Roy Styring Dearstyne Papers contain materials related to Dearstyne's education, teaching career, and endeavors in the field of poultry science, as well as materials related to his death and the Dearstyne Avian Health Center. Roy Styring Dearstyne was a member of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) Poultry Science faculty from 1922 to 1955, serving as the head of the Poultry Science Department from 1930 until his retirement in 1955. He developed a testing procedure for controlling pullorum disease in poultry, wrote one of the first books in the nation about poultry diseases, and was instrumental in the development and expansion of the North Carolina poultry industry. N.C. State's Dearstyne Avian Health Center, built in 1968, was named for him. Less

The Rynn Berry Jr. Papers include record files, books, periodicals, articles taken from periodicals, booklets, pamphlets, leaflets, manuscripts, writing drafts, research notes, interview transcripts, facsimiles, drawings, photographs, correspondence, audio recordings, video recordings, and computer disks, relating to Rynn Berry's interests in vegetarianism, veganism, and animal rights. Rynn Berry, Jr. was an author, lecturer, and activist who dedicated his life to increasing public awareness on vegetarianism, veganism, animal rights, and the religious and ethical aspects of these topics. He was regarded as an expert on the history of vegetarianism, and he wrote many books, articles, book entries, in addition to giving lectures and participating in discussion panels. Less

The Samuel B. Tove Papers consist largely of materials, 1962-1967, related to Tove's membership on an advisory committee that formulated proposals for the establishment of a doctoral program in biochemistry at the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). Other materials in this collection document Tove's membership in three other committees at North Carolina State: the program committee of the university's annual Animal Nutrition Conference, an ad hoc building committee on improvements to Polk Hall, and the Watauga Medal selection committee. Samuel B. Tove (1921-1994) of Baltimore, Maryland, was a researcher and professor of animal science and biochemistry at North Carolina State University from 1950 to 1987.
