The Alexander Isley Papers, 1967-2020, contains materials related to Alexander Isley’s childhood, schooling, and career as a graphic designer at M&Co., Spy magazine, and Alexander Isley, Inc. These materials include design sketches and drafts, final design samples, financial records, correspondence, press clippings, school records and coursework, memorabilia, and a website. Alexander Isley (1961- ) is a graphic designer from Durham, North Carolina, who, as of 2019, is creative director of Alexander Isley, Inc. He holds a degree in Environmental Design from the School of Design at North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union in New York City. From 1984 to 1986 he was the senior designer at the New York City design firm M&Co., then in 1987 became the first full-time art director of Spy, the New York-based satirical monthly magazine. He left Spy in 1988 to start his own design firm, Alexander Isley Inc. Isley has received several design awards, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Medal in 2014. The Lewis Clarke Collection, 1944 to 2006, documents the professional work of Lewis Clarke and his firm Lewis Clarke Associates as well as Clarke's time as a North Carolina State University School of Design faculty member from 1952 to 1968. The collection is arranged into eight series: project files, drawings, professional papers, faculty papers, personal papers, office files, project booklets, and photographic materials. The collection consists primarily of landscape architectural drawings and project files. The projects include residences, primary and secondary schools, community colleges, university campuses, regional hospitals, shopping centers, residential resort projects, and pedestrian malls. The drawings and project files represent projects located primarily, but not exclusively, throughout the southeast. Lewis James Clarke was born in Carlton, Nottingham, England on 10 March 1927. He earned a Master's degree in Architecture at the University of Leicester, Master's in Landscape Design from Kings College at the University of Durham, and received a Fulbright Scholarship and a Smith-Mundt Award to attend Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design to earn a Master's in Landscape Architecture in 1952. Clarke taught as an associate professor at the North Carolina State College School of Design (SOD), from 1952 to 1968. He operated his landscape architecture firm, Lewis Clarke Associates, from 1968 to 1993, working on projects such as community colleges in North Carolina and Virginia, residential resort master planning, and prototype enclosed mall projects. He created the original master plans for the Research Triangle Institute; Saint Andrews College, Laurinburg, North Carolina; and the North Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro. His signature works include Palmetto Dunes, Hilton Head Island; Carolina Trace, Sanford, North Carolina; and Ford’s Colony, Williamsburg, Virginia. The Historic Architecture Research Project Records contain drawings and project files by students in the Department of Architecture, School of Design, at North Carolina State University. Included are measured drawings, photographs, negatives, field notes and sketches, historical information, and essays. The majority of the projects document historic buildings in North Carolina. Twenty-one other states and the District of Columbia are represented, as are Germany, Mexico, and Colombia. Other course-related materials include syllabi, correspondence, uncompleted projects, and a petition to eliminate the course requirement. The correspondence series includes correspondence of professors in the North Carolina State University Department of Architecture, including Cecil D. Elliott, Henry L. Kamphoefner, Vernon Shogren, and Lawrence Wodehouse, with North Carolina State University architecture students, various North Carolina clerks of court, Charles E. Peterson of the National Park Service, and George S. Koyl, Moira B. Mathieson, and Earl H. Reed of the American Institute of Architects. Between 1951 and 1969, many architecture students at North Carolina State University completed summer projects documenting historic buildings and districts. Beginning in 1959, these projects were submitted to the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey. The project was formalized with the creation of the undergraduate course, "Historic Architecture Research" (ARC 300), which was required for admission to the fifth year architecture program. In 1964, students undertook a project to record the town of Beaufort in Carteret County, N.C. The Roy Gussow Models for Teaching Design include 20 abstract models made from painted metal, painted cardboard, brass, wood, and plexiglass. Gussow created the models in the 1960s for instruction purposes. He used them to teach the vocabulary of the components of 3-dimensions and prompt students to think about form. They demonstrate how an extended point becomes a line, an extended line becomes a plane, and an extended plane becomes a form. These models also were used to illustrate the variety of fluid and dynamic forms that can be constructed using a stable or static right angle. Roy Gussow (1918-2011) was an American abstract sculptor and educator who is most known for his polished stainless steel works. He attended Farmingdale State College, originally intending to become a farmer and graduated with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. After serving in World War II, he attended the Institute of Design in Chicago on the G.I. Bill and received a Bachelors of Science in Industrial Design. He taught at Bradley University and the Fine Arts Center of Colorado College before coming to North Carolina. Gussow was a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1951 to 1962 (tenured 1960). He went on to teach at the School of Architecture at the Pratt Institute, Columbia University, and the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. Museums throughout the country hosted exhibitions of his work and many own his sculptures including MOMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim and the Brooklyn Museum.
