The John William Shirley papers consist of a 1948 letter from Shirley to Dr. J. H. Lampe, a daily log from Shirley's Soviet Field Seminar of the Comparative Education Society (1958), and the publication, "Soviet Education and Its Challenge" (1959). John William Shirley (1908 - 1988) served as an English professor and dean of the Division of Basic Studies at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) from 1949 to 1955, and Dean of Faculty from 1955 to 1962. Shirley left N.C. State in 1962 to become Vice President and Provost of the University of Delaware. He received his A.B. degree from the State University of Iowa in 1932 and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1937. He also took graduate classes, 1932-1933, at the University of Nebraska. Less

The Josephine Scott Hudson Papers include research papers, correspondence, journals, photographs, postcards, news clippings, and ephemera. The bulk of the material contained in this collection relates to Cassius Rex Hudson's career with the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service and to the career of W. Kerr Scott, former governor of North Carolina. There is also material relating to Hudson's nephew, former North Carolina Governor Robert W. Scott. Daughter of Robert W. Scott of Alamance County, North Carolina, and sister of W. Kerr Scott, governor of North Carolina (1949-1953) and United States Senator (1954-1958), Josephine Scott married Cassius Rex Hudson in 1911. Cassius Rex Hudson, a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute, was hired by Seaman Knapp in 1907 to serve as the Farmer's Cooperative Demonstration Work agent for the state of North Carolina. In 1922, he was placed in charge of "Negro Demonstration Work" for the state of North Carolina and worked as the director of that program until his death in 1940. Less

The Juanita Lagg Cooperative Extension Papers consists of records pertaining to North Carolina Extension Homemakers work from 1915 to 2014. The records include photographs, letters, notes, correspondences, newspaper articles, a scrapbook, and other records relating to Juanita Lagg's work with Home Demonstration and Extension organizations. Juanita Lagg actively volunteered with the Rowan County Extension and Community Association for over fifty years. She joined the Rowan County Home Demonstration in 1956 and served in leadership positions at the club, county, district, state, and national level. Lagg researched and directed the North Carolina Extension Homemakers water project in Guatamala that brought clean water to three villages. In 1981, she was appointed by the governor to the Rowan County Board of Social Services and served two three-year terms. Less

This collection contains blueprints of floor plans, elevations, other drawings, and specifications for the Paul Welles, Jr. residence of Raleigh, North Carolina. The building was designed by Kenneth McCoy Scott. As of 2008, Anne Dahle is the owner of 3227 Birnamwood Road, Raleigh, North Carolina. The house was designed by Kenneth McCoy Scott for Paul Welles in 1955. Scott was a modernist architect who designed many other residences in the Raleigh and Durham area. Less

The Kenneth McCoy Scott collection contains project files, personal and professional papers, drawings and microfilms for buildings designed by Scott. Scott predominately designed residential and retail spaces, such as apartment complexes, shopping centers and motels. He also worked on educational and religious buildings. Project files include notes, correspondence, equipment catalogs, photographs, and contract information. The majority of the drawings are working drawings and shop drawings, although sketches, elevation site plans, and landscape plans are also included. Drawings may be on blue and brown paper, heavy translucent paper, sketch paper, and tracing paper. Several projects are also available on microfilm. Included in Scott's professional records are American Institute of Architecture records from the national and North Carolina chapters, and records from Scott's architectural firm. Personal papers include class notes from Scott's time as an architecture student, photographs, and personal correspondence. The Kenneth O. Beatty Papers contain both the professional and personal papers of the North Carolina State University chemical engineering professor. Included are professional and personal correspondence; research proposals; notes, reports, drafts of articles, speeches, and conference papers; university committee files; photographs and newspaper clippings; a scrapbook and several historical accounts of the North Carolina State University Department of Chemical Engineering; poetry; and other documents. Kenneth Orion Beatty was a professor of chemical engineering, 1946-1978, at North Carolina State University. His research interests included heat and mass transfer field, and in the 1960s and 1970s, he was a major participant in the International Heat Transfer Conferences. He also worked on languages for the blind and braille accessibility and functionality. After retirement, he was known as an expert witness in slip-and-fall and arson cases. Less

The Kenneth Walter Cameron Papers relates to Cameron's career as a professor of English at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), as well as his work as a scholar of the American transcendental movement. This collection contains the text of his radio address on Memorable Teachers, personal and professional correspondence with students and colleagues, a letter transmitting Dr. Cameron's publication West Virginia University Sixty Years Ago - Memories of Louis Watson Chappell, and a letter notifying Cameron that he had received the Award for Distinguished Achievement in Emerson Studies. Also included are excerpts from Dr. Cameron's publication Emerson the Essayist, and a copy of Pen and Ink (Volume I, 1942), a literary publication written by students in Cameron's freshman composition class. Examples of student term papers, course handouts and grade books (1938 - 1943) round out the collection. An educator, author, and scholar of the American transcendental movement, Kenneth Walter Cameron (1908-2006) was born on October 12, 1908, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, eldest son of Albert Ernest (1885-1938) and Zoe (1890-1957) Cameron. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from West Virginia University in 1930 and 1931, an S.T.B. from General Theological Seminary, New York, in 1935, and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1940. He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1935. Cameron came to North Carolina as an instructor in English at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) and taught from 1938 to 1943. After working briefly in a teaching position at Temple University, he settled permanently at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1946. At North Carolina State, Cameron taught a course in composition and a course entitled The Bible as Literature. He was involved in teaching an English course in the Army Specialized Training Program (U.S.) (ASTP) during World War II. Cameron authored and edited numerous articles and books on Emerson, Thoreau, and their contemporaries. He served as editor for both American Transcendental Quarterly and Emerson Society Quarterly. The Kent Lioret Collection of Political Buttons and Pamphlet, circa 1950-1999, contains a pamphlet by the British politician and communist party member Harry Pollitt, a news clipping, and a variety of buttons on political campaigns, the Vietnam War, and other topics. Materials date from the 1950s to the 1990s, although buttons are mainly from the 1960s to the early 1980s. E. Thirty-two architectural drawings for Kingswood Elementary School in Cary, North Carolina. The earliest item is a plot plan headed "Proposed New Building for Cary Colored Elem. School, Randolph Benton, Supt. of Schools, Wake County Board of Education, Raleigh, N.C." Other plans dated August 1953 include a roof structural plan, a floor plan, front elevation, and details for the primary classroom building. Also included are a plot plan, 1958, for additions to the school; plans, 1959, for a gymtorium; and plans, 1959, for a classroom and cafeteria addition. Kingswood Elementary School was located at 519 Ferrell Street in Cary, North Carolina. It was built in 1953, with additions in 1958 and 1959, to be the elementary school for African American children in Cary. The architect was Frank B. Simpson of Raleigh, North Carolina, and the designer was C. Eugene Savage, also of Raleigh. Less
