The Cyrus B. King Papers contain correspondence, political campaign materials, newsletters from a variety of local and national organizations, flyers, clippings, membership rosters, fundraising information, invitations, precinct maps, journal articles, newspaper editorials, and reports and resolutions on political issues. The majority of the material was generated through Cyrus King's work to promote civil rights and racial justice and his work on political campaigns. Correspondence includes letters to and from political figures. There are also documents that relate to his time as a librarian at North Carolina State University and a small amount of personal correspondence. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2014, with the majority dated after 1980. Cyrus Baldwin King (1922-2014), worked in the North Carolina State University Libraries for over twenty years and was active in a wide variety of efforts to promote civil rights and social justice. He was hired by N.C. State as an acquisitions librarian in 1963 and retired in 1984 as Assistant Director for Collection Management and Development. He was very politically active, writing tirelessly in support of the causes that he has adopted, most notably racial justice, campaigns to promote peace and non-violence, and other civil rights causes. The first library at North Carolina State University was established in 1889 in a room in Holladay Hall. In 1925 a new purpose-built library building was constructed (now Brooks Hall). In 1954 the current D.H. Hill Library building was opened (originally just the east wing of the current structure). The library space was expanded in 1971 by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second (or "south") bookstack tower. In 2013 the award-winning James B. Hunt Library opened on the university’s Centennial Campus. In 2016, NC State University Libraries won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, bestowed by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. The medal was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Director Susan Nutter during a ceremony. Susan Nutter retired from the Libraries in 2017, after an esteemed 30 year tenure. Less

This collection contains the records and working files of the North Carolina State University Libraries' Associate Director for Public Services, including correspondence, reports, statistics; primarily reference and interlibrary loan, but also records of the Circulation Department, 1910 to 1983. The North Carolina State University Libraries’ Associate Director for Public Services was primarily concerned with meeting the needs of the Libraries’ users including students, faculty, staff, and the outlying community. There was some overlap in terms of responsibilities and therefore records of the Public Services Council, Assistant Director for Reference Services, and the Assistant Director for General Services. Topics addressed by Public Services included photocopy services, interlibrary loan of materials, reference services, usability of library collection guides, and serials cataloging. These records contain files pertaining to the activities and administration of the North Carolina State University Burlington Textiles Library including correspondence and reference files kept by the library, clippings, brochures, and other information about topics related to the College of Textiles. They also include slide sets, a portrait of Wallace W. Riddick, Jr., the Dedication Plaque for the Burlington Textiles Library, the Quick Response Collection, Textile World Charts, and panels from past exhibits. Materials range in date from 1911 to 2010. From 1988 to 2013, the Burlington Textiles Library was located in room 4411 of the College of Textiles complex on the Centennial Campus at North Carolina State University. The Library provided services to the faculty and staff, students, and NC State Centennial Campus community and university affiliates. The Library supported the curriculum and research programs in textile chemistry, textile materials and management, and fiber and polymer science. This collection contains articles, correspondence, reports, minutes, agendas, handwritten notes, programs, and memoranda relating to ten year plans, biennial plans, and annual plans relating to the activities and administration of the North Carolina State University Libraries office of the Assistant Director of Planning and Research. The records also include those of the Long Range Planning Committee, the Centennial Celebration Committee, and the Commission on the State of the Library. The majority of these records belonged to Jinnie Davis who retired in 2001 after twenty-one years of working for the Libraries. The North Carolina State University Libraries Administration carries out the library's mission by planning, organizing, directing, and promoting activities and operations in public service; by managing, organizing, and preserving collections; by recruiting, retaining, and developing personnel; by fundraising and reseraching; and through technology support, budget and finance, facilities, and public relations. The Director of Planning and Research was previously titled Assistant Director for Planning and Research. The records of the North Carolina State University Library Committee span from 1934 to 1998 and include the records of the Library Building Committee, a subcommittee of the Library Committee formed to oversee the construction of additional library facilities in the 1960s. Included in the collection are the minutes of the committee, fund allocations, correspondence from various departments and information on library policy. Documents relating to construction in the 1960s span from 1965 to 1967 and include bound proposals for the construction and use of the facility. Documents are arranged chronologically, with building committee records following full committee records. The North Carolina State University (North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, 1887-1917; North Carolina State College, 1917-1965) Library Committee was first formed in 1908. English professors, Thomas P. Harrison and George Summey were appointed as co-chairs of the library committee. The role of the committee was to contact faculty for recommendations of titles to be added to the library collection. The role of the library committee has expanded since this time and, though it still advises on accessions, it also handles the finnancial responsibilities of the library, oftentimes advocating for more facility resources and making descisions on library policies. As of 2012, the University Library Committee (also referred to as the University Standing Committee on Library) advises the Provost and the Director of Libraries on the fomulation of library policy in relationship to development of resources, the allocation of book funds, the allocation of library space and the general development of library service to the University. Lyons Design Library, 1945-1998, include clippings, publications, memorandum, and various files retained by the library documenting activities of the Harrye B. Lyons Design Library and the School of Design, and design research. Clippings from various newspapers and professional publications relate to lives and works of deans, faculty, and alumni of the School of Design. The majority of newspapers are local, including the News and Observer and the Raleigh Times, but national papers, such as the New York Times, are also included. Other clippings relate broadly to the Harrye B. Lyons Library, School of Design, and North Carolina State University including associated students and staff. Acquisition information, annual reports, project reports, policies, meetings notes, and reference files of the Harrye B. Lyons Library are included. Brochures, fliers, and memoranda relating to the students, staff, faculty, and events of the School of Design are also included. The Harrye B. Lyons Design Library supports the North Carolina State University, College of Design, orginally School of Design, and has collection emphases in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and art and design. The Design Library is located in Brooks Hall, now part of the College of Design. Brooks Hall was originally built to be the library on campus, D. H. Hill Jr. Library. The Design Library inhabits the space that was the original reading room of D. H. Hill Jr. Library. It was named for Mrs. Harrye B. Lyons, who headed the Design Library from 1947 to 1968. Less
