These records contain background research materials and notes created by I. T. Littleton during the writing of his book entitled The D. H. Hill Library : An Informal History, 1887-1987. The first library at North Carolina State University was established in 1889 in a room in Holladay Hall. In 1925 a new purpose-built library building was constructed (now Brooks Hall). In 1954 the current D.H. Hill Library building was opened (originally just the east wing of the current structure). The library space was expanded in 1971 by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second (or "south") bookstack tower. In 2013 the award-winning James B. Hunt Library opened on the university’s Centennial Campus. In 2016, NC State University Libraries won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, bestowed by the Institute for Museum and Library Service. The medal was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama to Director Susan Nutter during a ceremony. Susan Nutter retired from the Libraries in 2017, after an esteemed 30 year tenure. Less

The North Carolina State University Libraries, William Rand Kenan, Jr. Veterinary Medicine Library Records consist of four framed photographs of William R. Kenan, Jr. and his home, informational brochures, articles, born digital materials, photographs of the library dedication, and documents regarding gifts to the library. The Veterinary Medicine Library opened in 1981 with the first graduating class from the School (now College) of Veterinary Medicine. It supports the research and curriculum at the College of Veterinary Medicine and the study of life sciences, veterinary medicine, and animal and human health at NC State University. In 2006 it was renamed the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Library of Veterinary Medicine. Kenan (1872-1965) was a North Carolina native who contributed to progress in a variety of fields, including education, engineering, agriculture, finance, business and science. Less

This subgroup includes correspondence, reports, personnel files, and news clippings from the North Carolina State University Director of Athletics. Subjects include individual sports such as football, basketball, track and field, and wrestling, as well as the building and renovation of Carter-Finley Stadium. Award certificates and lists of award winners are also included. Some files in this subgroup have restricted access. Athletics began officially at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts on March 12, 1892 when a football team made up of students at the college defeated the Raleigh Male Academy, a local high school, by the score 12-6. That fall, the team scrimmaged for the first time against the second teams of area colleges. After losing to the University of North Carolina and Wake Forest, the football team decided that they lacked the funds necessary to compete on an equal level with other colleges and universities. Therefore, they petitioned the college Board of Trustees for fifty dollars to finance travel and team equipment. With this request, the faculty and trustees of the college first became involved with intercollegiate athletics. Since 1947 athletic teams at North Carolina State have been known as the Wolfpack. The University has been a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference since it was formed in 1953. Less

The North Carolina State University, Athletics, Football Audiovisual Materials collection contains primarily moving image recordings of North Carolina State University varsity football games. These recordings were captured by the Department of Athletics for coaching and review purposes, and are mostly without sound, commentary, or other narration. Also included in this collection are a small number of narrated moving image recordings on the topics of NC State football and collegiate football in general, intended for airing over television stations; as well as miscellaneous footage of individual players and coaches at NC State. Materials range in date from 1937 to 2011, and some recordings are undated. In 1892, the first official football game at NC State was played against a local prep school, Raleigh Male Academy; in 1893, State played their first intercollegiate game against Tennessee. The 1895 team was the first to wear the now traditional red and white colored uniforms, a change from their original pink and blue uniforms. The first on-campus football game was played in 1907 on the field that would later become Riddick Stadium. In 1918, John Ripple becomes the first athlete at NC State to be named an All-American in any sport, and in 1978, Ted Brown becomes the first African American to be named an All-American in football. The football team adopted the nickname “Wolfpack” in 1921, although all other sports continued to use the name “Red Terrors.” In 1930, the first night game was played at Riddick Stadium, and ended in a 37-0 victory against High Point. The team was invited to their first post-season bowl game in 1947, the January 1 Gator bowl against the University of Oklahoma. On October 21 1950, the football team played their first televised game against Maryland. The new Carter Stadium (renamed Carter-Finley Stadium in 1979) opened on October 8, 1966, and in 1967, Marcus Martin became the first African American member of the football team. In 1967, the team won their first bowl game (the Liberty Bowl) against Georgia with a score of 14-7. The team won their first ACC championship in 1957. Less

The North Carolina State University, Athletics, Men's Basketball Audio/Visual Materials collection contains primarily moving image films and videos of North Carolina State University Men's basketball games. Many of these were captured by the Department of Athletics for coaching and review purposes, and are mostly without sound, commentary, or other narration. Also included in this collection are a number of broadcast recordings centering around the NCAA championship titles of 1974 and 1983; as well as miscellaneous footage of individual players and coaches at NC State. There are some coaches' shows as well. Materials range in date from the 1939 to 2014, with a number of films undated. As of 2023, the North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball team has won almost 20 conference tournaments, competed in the NCAA Tournament almost 30 times, gone to the Final Four three times, and won a national championship twice. Everett Case coached the Pack from 1946 to 1965 and was instrumental in forming the Atlantic Coast Conference. They won the 1974 championship under the leadership of Coach Norm Sloan. The "Cardiac Pack" as they were called achieved one of the great upsets in sports history under Coach Jim Valvano in 1983 to win the National Championship. Less

The records are the subject files of the North Carolina State University Athletics Department. The records date from 1909 through 1976, although the bulk of the files are from 1945-1965. Included in this collection are minutes of the Board of Trustees of the university under its two earliest names: North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1887-1917) and North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (1917-1932). Also included in this collection are minutes of the Consolidated University of North Carolina, a predecessor of the current University of North Carolina System, minutes of the Board since June 1972, following the creation of the UNC System, and minutes from several committees. The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics contain correspondence, contracts, minutes, reports and papers, publications, and departmental information documenting the department's academic, administrative, and extension activities. Materials range in date from 1922 to 2008. Agricultural Economics was first offered as a course of study in 1897 as a part of the agricultural curriculum. By 1927, Agricultural Administration had become a full department and was transferred to the School of Agriculture. Shortly thereafter, its name was changed to Agricultural Economics. In 1965, the department merged in the Department of Economics. By 1990, this program had grown so large that it was split once again, and a new Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics was created. Less

The records of the North Carolina State College (later, University) Department of Agronomy contain correspondence, minutes, reports, project information, publications, and department history files. Materials range in date from 1934 to 1960. Early study of agronomy at North Carolina State University (then, the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts) was largely the province of the North Carolina Experiment Station, until Charles B. Williams was appointed the University's first agronomist in 1906. He held that position until 1917, when he became the Dean of Agriculture, a position he held until 1923. In 1924, he was named to be the first Head of the new Department of Agronomy, created with the concurrent founding of the School of Agriculture. The Department quickly established a strong reputation in teaching, research, and farm extension work. By the 1940s the Department had developed into two destinct programs of study: Crops and Soils. During the following decade the department had grown so large that in 1955 it was dissolved and its components formed into two separate departments, Field Crops and Soils. These Departments were eventually renamed Crop Science and Soil Science, respectively. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Animal Science contain correspondence, newsletters, memoranda, personnel records, brochures and other publications, reports, and grant applications concerning animal husbandry, animal science courses, 4-H, swine evaluation stations, research stations, the North Carolina Cattlemen's Association, 4-H horse shows, horse husbandry and judging, the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, the Institute of Nutrition, and sheep. Also included are records of Swine Husbandry Extension. Materials range in date from 1920 to 2012. Beginning with research and programs in animal husbandry during the early years of the university, the Department of Animal Industry was established during the 1920s. The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering contain correspondence, scholarship information, course and curriculum information, departmental history, facilities and farm equipment information, legal documents, research project records, publications, photographs and slides, and files on departmental extension and outreach work. Also included are a number of technical drawings of farm equipment and structures patented by department personnel as well as films (many digitized and available online) of agricultural equipment and activities. There is also a large series of drawings and plans mainly of agricultural structures. Materials range in date from 1920 to 2013. Organized agricultural engineering education at North Carolina State began in 1917, as an offering of several related courses in the Department of Agronomy. In 1937, the program's name was changed, and the degree became a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering. In 1940, the program separated from Agronomy, becoming a full-fledged department. The Department of Communication Services Records contain correspondence and memoranda, reports, news releases, clippings, subject files, plans of work and annual reports, an extensive collection of photographs, negatives, slides, and CD-ROMs and related material concerning the work of the department. Materials range in date from 1926 to 2012. The Department of Communication Services provided communication leadership and innovation for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to further the mission of North Carolina State University. The department delivered timely, accurate, research-based information to improve the quality of life for citizens of North Carolina, facilitated the effective transfer of information between clients and their audiences, trained and advised clients in effective communications, and provided communications services.By 2013, Communication Services was no longer a department under the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
