This collection contains architectural drawings collected from various sources by Catherine W. Bishir during her research. Some were acquired for a study of Art Deco architecture in North Carolina. The drawings are mostly blueprints or other reproductions, and they date from 1871 to 1996, although most are from the early twentieth century. Catherine W. Bishir joined the NC State University Libraries in February 2007 as Curator of Architecture Special Collections. She has had a long career in historic preservation, serving as senior architectural historian for Preservation North Carolina, senior architectural historian and architectural survey coordinator for the State Historic Preservation Office in the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, and adjunct professor in NC State’s School of Architecture. She was a co-founder of the Vernacular Architectural Forum. Her publications include Architects and Builders in North Carolina and North Carolina Architecture. The Catherine W. Bishir Papers chiefly contain research documentation compiled during the creation of North Carolina Architects and Builders, both for the book and also for the web-based platform, and for other articles and books written by Bishir, including her work on monuments in the American South. Among the files are many photographs of buildings and sites, mostly in North Carolina, organized by county. Launched in 2009, North Carolina Architects and Builders is a reference work that contains brief biographical accounts, building lists, and bibliographical information about architects, builders, and other artisans who planned and built North Carolina's architecture. Bishir is author or co-author of several prize-winning publications, including North Carolina Architecture; Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building; the three-volume Guides to the Historic Architecture of Eastern, Western, and Piedmont North Carolina; Southern Built: American Architecture, Regional Practice; and, most recently, Crafting Lives: African American Artisans in New Bern, North Carolina, 1770-1900s. From 1971 through 2001 she served as staff member and supervisor for the architectural survey and National Register of Historic Places programs in the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office. She then served as senior architectural historian with the non-profit organization, Preservation North Carolina. As adjunct professor at North Carolina State University Department of Architecture she taught classes in vernacular architecture and North Carolina architecture. She was Curator of Architecture for Special Collections at North Carolina State University Libraries, where she was instrumental in the web-based North Carolina Architects and Builders: A Biographical Dictionary (ncarchitects.lib.ncsu.edu) and in collecting architectural drawings and other records. This collection contains architectural drawings and specifications for the Norman Stockton Residence (1929) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and drawings for two homes belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Dudley L. Simms. The Norman Stockton Residence in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is an example of Keen's Georgian Revival work in Reynolda Park. The collection also contains drawings for the O'Hanlon Residence. Charles Barton Keen (1868-1931) was a Philadelphia-born architect who was known for his colonial revival country homes. The Charles Burgess Williams Papers, 1895 - 1953, contain items relating to Williams' time at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. During his tenure as a student, researcher, and professor, the institution was renamed North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). The collection contains personal documents, professional materials documenting his contributions to the study of agriculture, published and unpublished biographical pieces, and materials relating to the history of North Carolina State University. Charles Burgess Williams (1871 - 1947) was a scientist and an educator. He received a B.A. and M.A. in agriculture from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. He spent his career at the College as a professor, chemist, department head, dean, and leader in the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. Less

The Charles Dearing Papers contains correspondence, research materials, and data gathered over Dearing's forty-year career. As Director of the Coastal Plain Test Farm in Willard, North Carolina, Dearing oversaw experiments on grapes, strawberries, and bluberries. The collection contains pollination records, field reports, vineyard reports, nursery lists, samples and block notes. Dearing's research was primarily focused on grape research, especially of the muscadine variety. As Director of the Coastal Plain Test Farm in Willard, North Carolina, Charles Dearing oversaw experiments on grapes, strawberries, and blueberries. Big Little Books and Better Little Books published, 1933-1943, by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin, and books of similar format published, 1934-1941, by the Saalfield Publishing Company, Engel-van Wiseman and Rand McNally. Charles G. Wright is Professor Emeritus of Entomology at North Carolina State University. Big Little Books were inexpensive children's books about 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" in size. They were first published in 1932 by Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin. There was a captioned picture opposite each page of text. Most of them were based on radio, comic strips, or motion pictures. Other publishing companies which produced similar books were Dell, Engel-van Wiseman, Fawcett, Goldsmith, Lynn, Ottenheimer, Saalfield, Waldman, and World Syndicate. Less

The collection includes Charles C. Hartmann's original plans and revisions for design of the Atlantic Bank and Trust Building in Burlington, North Carolina, in 1928 as well as plans for the 1950 renovation of the building. Architect Charles Conrad Hartmann was born in 1889 in New York City but moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, to open an office in 1921. Hartmann played an important role in the spread of high-rise downtown bank and office buildings in many North Carolina towns, as well as the design of many hospitals, housing projects, commercial and religious buildings, and single-family homes through the 1960s. The Charles Horace Hamilton Papers document Hamiilton's career as professor and chair of the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College. The collection describes Hamilton's research, writings, university career, and participation in professional organizations. His main interests were higher education, population and migration, rural families, rural health care and standards of living, and statistics. This collection also contains a manuscript by the Federal Writers Project titled "Gamblers All," detailing the history of tobacco and tobacco workers in North Carolina. It is believed that this manuscript is unpublished. C. Horace (Charles Horace) Hamilton (1901-1977) taught rural sociology at North Carolina State College from 1931 to 1936 and from 1940 to 1967. The Charles Horton Papers contain photographs, drawings, furniture catalogues, price lists, correspondence, and financial information related to Horton's career as a free-lance furniture designer in Statesville, North Carolina. Charles M. Horton (1912 - 1987) was a furniture designer in Statesville, North Carolina. He graduated from Statesville High School and never studied furniture design in a formal setting. He began his career working with his brother and his father, Fred Horton. As his father's successor, he became a free-lance furniture designer in one of the most prosperous furniture manufacturing centers in the country. He designed individual pieces and suites for manufacturers throughout the Southeast. Among his clients were Lexington Chair Company and Burlington Furniture Company in North Carolina, Pulaski Furniture in Virginia, Trogdon Furniture in Georgia, and Williams Furniture Corporation in South Carolina. The Charles J. Nusbaum Papers relate to Nusbaum's plant pathology research as well as interactions with his students at North Carolina State University. This collection contains Nusbaum's essays, publications, and reports, research correspondence, and materials from his classes. Materials related to the Tobacco Workers Conference are also included. In addition, there are photographs and slides, some pertaining to Nusbaum's research and others to his personal life. The photographs generally date from the 1930s and 1940s. The slides generally date from the 1930s to the 1960s. Items in the collection date from 1928 to 1992, with the bulk dating from the 1930s to the 1970s. Less

The Charles McGee Heck Papers document Heck's life and work prior to and during his tenure as Professor and Head of the Physics Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), 1917 - 1946. The collection consists of bulletins, letters, a proposal, a testimonial, typescripts, a display album, and lantern slide plates. Charles McGee Heck (1881-1952) joined the Electrical Engineering Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1913 to teach physics. He became Professor and Head of the Physics Department in 1917 and remained so until his retirement in 1946. Less

The Charles Pearson Papers consist of biographical materials, professional materials, and photographs documenting Pearson's family and childhood, student days at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), and career as a civil engineer in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Charles A. Pearson (1875-1966) was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1894. During a six-decade career, he was first a partner in an architectural firm, then worked for various engineering firms, contractors, and railroad companies, supervising the construction of many highway and railroad bridges, and other civil engineering projects, in North Carolina and the South. The Charles Romeo Lefort Papers contains the newsletter, "Seven Up" which was sent to a group of students who graduated from North Carolina State College in 1937. The collection also includes correspondence between Lefort and Dwight Durham, C.S. Gale and Hall Morrison. A graduate of North Carolina State College (1932), Lefort was Assistant Dean of Students (1932-1941, 1946-1947) and Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics (1941-1942) at North Carolina State College. This collection contains Charles Wilson Suggs's notes, data, publications, papers presented, reports, photographs, and sketches, primarily on the topics of tobacco mechanization (tobacco harvesters and transplanters) and equipment ergonomics. Born in 1928, Suggs received his B.S.A.E. in 1949 and Ph.D. in 1959 from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), where he then joined the faculty. His research interests were tobacco mechanization and human-factors engineering. He developed one of the first mechanical tobacco leaf harvesters. Less

The Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright Papers, 1767-1990, include correspondence, photographs, research notes, transcriptions, and blueprints. Material was gathered by Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright for her study of the practice of building in North Carolina between 1865 and 1945 and includes information on the administration of the grant project, photographs and manuscripts from the book written by Brown, as well as research and reference files used in the project. The papers of Chester J. Lange, a prominent North Carolina veterinarian, are largely comprised of correspondence and organizational documents relating to his activities with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association). Also included are newspaper clippings documenting his professional accomplishments. Information about the establishment of a veterinary school at North Carolina State University is included, as well as programs from conferences, flyers, and research notes. Chester J. Lange (April 14, 1910 - September 26, 1994) was a prominent veterinarian in Greensboro North Carolina. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell in 1932 and an M.S. degree in biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1938. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served in World War II as a captain in the Veterinary Corps before opening an animal hospital in Greensboro. He was active in the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association), serving as secretary-treasurer and later as president. He was also involved with the Carolina Kennel Club and the Humane Society of Guilford County, and was the recipient of the NCVMA’s Veterinarian of the Year award. Less

The Claire Necker Papers contain notes, drafts, compilations of images, clippings, artifacts, and publications relating to Necker's research interests on cats. The writings and illustrations in the collection includes notes and drafts as well as illustrations Necker compiled during research for publications. There are numerous notebooks listing publications. Additionally, there is artwork and artifacts relating to cats or other animals. The correspondence series is fairly short with mostly letters to Necker. A portion of the correspondence is with Guy Bogart, who traded lengthy typed letters with Necker and two other correspondents. Much of the material is undated, but likely dates from the 1960s-1980s with some clippings dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, or earlier. Claire Kral Necker was born Claire Kral Nemec on 16 October 1917. In 1939 she married Walter L. Necker, who was then completing a BS in zoology at the University of Chicago. She and Walter shared interests in science and bibliography. Walter worked with a variety of organizations as, at various times, scientist, librarian, curator and rare books cataloger. Claire earned Master's degrees in Zoology and Chemistry (when and where is not documented, though it was sometime before 1968), and after World War II she and Walter started Aardvark Books, a mail-order antiquarian book business. Claire and Walter divorced in 1968, and she found work at a local library. Claire had for some time pursued a career as a free-lance writer, but in 1969 she published her first book, Cats and Dogs (A. S. Barnes). Necker's other works include The Natural History of Cats (Delta, 1970), Supernatural Cats; An Anthology (Doubleday, 1972), Four Centuries of Cat Books (Scarecrow Press, 1972), and The Cat's Got Our Tongue (Scarecrow Press, 1973).
