The Holloway–Reeves Records contain more than 2,000 drawings and plans which document the breadth of the firm’s professional activities. Drawings include floor plans, elevations, and details for a variety of projects, such as houses, schools, university classroom and research facilities, dormitories, churches, correctional facilities, hospitals, churches, and office buildings primarily located in North Carolina. Most materials date from 1947 to 1987. Earlier drawings, dating from 1934, by other architects are also included. Project files primarily focus on the most prominent buildings the firm designed including the North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina State Legislative Building, and North Carolina State University’s Harrelson Hall. Holloway-Reeves was an architectural firm based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The partners, John S. Holloway (1923-2005) and Ralph "Bernie" Reeves, Jr. (1920-1984), both studied architecture at North Carolina State College. The firm began in 1948 with William Weber as the third partner. In 1951 the firm was established as Holloway-Reeves. It eventually became one of the largest architectural firms in North Carolina. Projects included numerous school, university, and state government buildings, as well as churches, residences, camps, and hospitals. Collaborations with New York architect Edward Durell Stone resulted in designs for the North Carolina State Legislative Building and the North Carolina Museum of Art. The firm also worked with Edward “Terry” Waugh to design North Carolina State University’s Harrelson Hall, the first circular classroom structure ever built on a university campus. The Mann Family Papers contain correspondence, church bulletins, scrapbooks, newsclippings, magazine articles, photographs, brochures, programs, artifacts, and other materials regarding Carroll Mann Sr., Carroll Mann Jr., and Carroll Mann III. There are also documents on Mann Hall and the Memorial Bell Tower on the North Carolina State University campus. The Mann family has had a long association with North Carolina State University. Carroll Lamb Mann, Sr. (1877-1961), graduated from the college in 1899, and was on the civil engineering faculty there from 1901 to 1948. Carroll Lamb Mann, Jr. (1911-1999), graduated from NC State in 1932, and he returned to NC State as a professor of civil engineering in 1953. He later chaired the college's Committee on Buildings and Grounds, directed the Facilities Planning Division, and led the college safety division. Carroll Lamb Mann III (1934-2013) graduated from NC State in 1959 with a BS in zoology. He was a practicing neurosurgeon in Raleigh, NC, for 26 years, and he was an avid fisher and hunter. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University, Construction Services Records contain correspondence, plans, drawings, and other documentation related to the construction, renovation, and repair of buildings and other structures on the North Carolina State University campus. In 1960 North Carolina State University established what was formerly known as the Campus Planning Office, which updated the 1958 plan. The Campus Planning Office was renamed the Design and Construction Services Department, located under the authority of the Facilities Division in the Office of Finance and Administration. This collection contains blueprints, drawings, notes, sketches, memoranda, surveys, master plans, and photographic slides, prints, and negatives relating to projects and initiatives undertaken by the Office of Campus Planning and Strategic Investment (formerly the Office of the University Architect). The majority of materials correspond to Edwin F. Harris’s tenure as Campus Planning Consultant, beginning in 1966, and later as director of Facilities Planning Division, a title which eventually became University Architect. However, the collection includes materials that pre-date Harris, as well as more recent additions to the collection. The University Archives contains architectural plans, drawings, and other materials for university buildings; however, federal and state law restricts access to certain types of documents in these categories. The Special Collections Research Center of the NC State University Libraries will handle access requests for those materials on a case-by-case basis, with the intention of providing as much access as possible to researchers. To support the university’s mission and goals, the Office of Campus Planning and Strategic Investment leads campus master planning, capital planning, space planning, campus design, and facilities data management efforts, which include the building floor plans, campus maps, GIS, and plan library. The University Archives Reference Collection, University Buildings, Sites, & Landmarks subgroup contains clippings, correspondence, news releases, publications, reports, speeches, and related archival material concerning the physical features of the University landscape. This is an artificial collection, maintained by Special Collections staff. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College). The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893. By the turn of the century the College had grown to some half dozen buildings, about 300 students, and had begun to diversify its curricula. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931 the College greatly reworked its curricula as it underwent consolidation. Along with North Carolina College for Women and the University of North Carolina, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina,. North Carolina State is now one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system, having received university status, and, after some controversy, assumed its current name in 1965. As of 2007, N.C. State had a student body of nearly 30,000, nearly two thousand faculty, and research and program expenditures of over $440 million. Less

This collection contains photographic negatives of Holladay Hall, the Court of North Carolina and the 1911 Building on the North Carolina State University campus, as well as Pullen Park in Raleigh. These images are dated 1936. There are also more recent prints made from the negatives, and a CD with digital scans of the images. The CD also contains images of Hamlet, North Carolina, and an unidentified group of people, but original negatives and prints were not included with the donation of this collection. Robert Jackson (Jack) Fetner (1918-1994) was from Hamlet, North Carolina, and he attended North Carolina State College (later University) as a freshman in 1936. Less

The bulk of this records subgroup consists of black-and-white photographic prints that document the history of North Carolina State University’s physical campus and facilities from 1889 to the 1990s, but it also contains related color prints, negatives, contact prints, contact sheets, and slides. The images show interior and exterior views of buildings, outdoor facilities and constructed items, general campus views, views of the surrounding area, and aerial photographs. In addition, the photographs in this subgroup illustrate people, events, and activities related to the facilities and areas of campus they picture. This includes construction, renovations, beautification projects, groundbreakings, and dedication ceremonies. Some images demonstrate damage to or destruction of buildings, architectural and decorative details, and the moving of departments or items from one building to another. This subgroup also contains photographic copies of three-dimensional architectural models, architectural plans, artists renderings, sketches, floor plans, and maps In 1887, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation creating the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a land-grant institution to provide education, research, and extension services to the state. When the College opened in 1889, it consisted of a 62-acre site with one building. As the university's enrollment grew in the following decades, more land was acquired and more facilities were constructed. As of 2007, the University’s Raleigh campus consists of the Main Campus and Centennial Campus and comprises approximately 2,100 acres of land. Its hundreds of buildings house more than eight million square feet of built space and accommodate a community of over 31,000 students and faculty. Less

The College of Natural Resources photographs include portraits and candid shots of students and faculty in classes, labs, and outdoor settings. Prominent faculty members pictured include Carl Alwin Schenck, Richard J. Preston, and Clarence E. Libby. Photographs of meetings, conferences, events, and awards receptions are included. This collection also contains images of the buildings, laboratories, and equipment associated with the College of Natural Resources. Although the majority of the photographs are undated, these photographs range approximately from the late 1930s to the late 1990s; most are from the 1950s to the 1970s. The majority of these photographs are black and white. In 1929, North Carolina State College formally established the Department of Forestry. In 1931, the Department of Forestry was renamed the Division of Forestry, and in 1950, the Division of Forestry was elevated to School status and renamed the School of Forestry. The School of Forestry became the School of Forest Resources in 1968, and the College of Forest Resources in 1987. Finally, in 2000, the College of Forest Resources assumed its present name, the College of Natural Resources. As of 2010, the College of Natural Resources includes the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and the Department of Wood and Paper Science. This subgroup of the North Carolina State University Archives Photograph Collection includes approximately 600 copy negatives. The negatives depict a wide variety of subjects, with particular emphasis on the North Carolina State University campus and buildings, administrators and faculty, and athletics. There are also some negatives that depict the activities of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. North Carolina State University is a research-extensive, land grant institution located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts under the auspices of the federal Morrill Act of 1862, the school held its first classes in the fall of 1889. As of 2014, NC State is one of the seventeeen constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina system. Less

This collection consists of glass negatives and lantern slides chiefly depicting various aspects of agriculture in North Carolina and buildings on the campus of N.C. State University. Subjects include agricultural extension work, agricultural research, farms and farm life, animal husbandry, botany, horticulture, and crop science. One set of slides shows the university's first nuclear reactor; another comprises song slides that were presumably used at 4-H meetings or camps in the state. Many of the slides are hand-colored. Also included in the collection are photographic prints made from some of the negatives, manuscript material from the original storage containers, and examples of the original storage envelopes. The North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts was founded as the state's land-grant institution in 1887, and formally opened its doors two years later. Renamed the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1917, the school became part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina (later the University of North Carolina System) in 1932. The institution was restyled North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1963, and two years later renamed North Carolina State University (officially the North Carolina State University at Raleigh).
