This collection primarily contains letters from Azariah Graves Thompson (1885-1963) to his family in Leasburg, North Carolina, from 1905 to 1909, while he was a student at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University); a print bill entitled "Regulations for Dormitories at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts"; a typed transcription of reminiscences written in about 1900 by Thompson's mother, Ella Williams Graves Thompson; and a typed transcription of "A History of Leasburg with Personal Recollections," 1960, written by his sister, Ella Graves Thompson. Also included are photographs and typed transcriptions of the letters and some notes, 1997, on local and family history by Jeannine D. Whitlow. This collection contains newsclippings collected by Howard Snyder and which concern the 1929 merger of the Pennsylvania State Forest School in Mont Alto, Pa., with the Pennsylvania State College. Some clippings have been mounted on pages separated from a scrapbook. Also contained in the collection is Snyder's red wool jacket from his time at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University). On the left breast pocket is an emblem that reads "NCS 30." Howard Aden Snyder graduated from North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) in 1930 with a B. S. in Forestry. He was in the first graduating class of the college's new forestry program. During the previous year he was one of approximately 50 students who came to NCC State from the Pennsylvania State Forest School in Mont Alto, Pennsylvania. They were unhappy with the merger of that school with Pennsylvania State College. Less

The Joseph Alfred Miller Papers contain items from Miller's student days (1900-1904) at the college that eventually became NC State University. Included are the jacket and caps of his cadet uniform; photographs showing student life, athletics, and campus buildings; student publications; and one of his engineering textbooks. A few of the photos show Miller's future wife Ella Duckett and his college roommate William Joel Patton. Some of the student publications and the textbook contain his marginalia (the textbook contains a note about Professor Carl Riddick). The collection also contains some college publications from the 1930s when other Miller family members attended NC State, and this includes athletics programs. Joseph Alfred Miller (1883-1949) of Brevard, North Carolina, graduated from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (abbreviated A & M and later renamed North Carolina State University) in 1904. This collection contains material relating to the scholastic life of Martha Bailey Hawkins Andrews at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) from 1925 to 1933. It also includes material that documents the history of North Carolina State University. Materials are in the format of class notes, course syllabi, course notebooks, newspaper clippings, and correspondence as well as photographs. Martha Bailey Hawkins Andrews was one of the first women at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), graduating in 1929 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. The Mary Yarbrough Papers (1825-2012) contains a variety of materials including correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts, most of which document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

Reiman, former Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. These materials range in date from 1955 to 2012. The Division of Student Affairs at North Carolina State University provided programs and services for students and the larger community to enhance quality of life, facilitate intellectual, ethical and personal growth, and create a culture which engenders respect for human diversity. Topics cover scholarships, named scholarships, grants, financial aid, and work study programs. The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) assists students and parents in applying for and securing financial assistance when family resources are insufficient to meet educational expenses. The North Carolina State University, Division of Student Affairs, Student Media Authority Records contain budget and financial statements, contracts, correspondence, minutes, staff applications, layout and design information, and publications. There is also a large amount of photographic materials, including CDs, DVDs, photographic prints, negatives, contact sheets, and slides, most of which are from student photographers. The collection includes records of the Student Media Board, 1928-2008, the Agromeck office from 1909 to 2011, the Technician office from 1939 to 2011, the WKNC Radio Station from 1922 to 2006, the Windhover from 1928 to 2013, the Nubian Message from 2007 to 2009, and a small number of records, 1926-2022, from other publications. The Student Media Authority at North Carolina State University oversees creation of campus student publications at North Carolina State University, which include a yearbook, a daily newspaper, literary magazine, and African American student newspaper. It also oversees the student radio station, WKNC, and student television station, Wolf TV. The Publications Board was formed at North Carolina State College in or before 1933 to oversee creation of student publications. By 1937, it included representatives from student publications such as the Agromeck, Technician, Wataugan, Southern Engineer, and Agriculturist. By the late 1940s, it also included representatives from the student radio station WVWP. In the following decades, the organization continued to oversee the finances and leadership of student publications at North Carolina State University. It underwent various name changes, becoming known as the Student Media Board by the mid-2000s. As of 2010, Student Media is part of the Division of Student Affairs and is based in Witherspoon Student Center. It includes 220 paid and volunteer student positions. Less

The Council was created to form a collective organization to represent students from all disciplines within the College of Agriculture (later, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences), and acts as the unofficial student organization of the College. What is known in 2008 as the Agri-Life Council was founded sometime during or before 1922 at N. C. This collection also includes a number of publications produced and distributed by the national office of Alpha Zeta. Alpha Zeta was founded at Ohio State University in 1897 as an honorary professional society for students and industry professionals in the agriculture and natural resources fields. Members of the ACS work together to share information in the field of ceramics research. A student chapter of the ACS was started in or before 1925 at North Carolina State College (University). The student chapter remained active through at least 1987, though it has since disbanded. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Engineers' Council contain administrative records (including meeting minutes, officer and committee files, financial records, their constitution, membership information, and other general records), records from events and activities the Council hosted, files from their involvement with the Order of St. Patrick engineering honorary society, production and publications files (including photographic files) for their publication, the NC State Engineer (and its predecessor, the Southern Engineer), and other general information about the Council, its members, and its activities. It also includes the official website of the Engineers' Council, beginning in 2020. Materials range in date from 1926 to 2020. The purpose of the Engineers' Council was to provide a unified student voice within the School of Engineering, while also promoting the study and practice of the various disciplines in engineering. While the records of the Engineers' Council do not indicate gaps in the Councils' activity, the Council may have disbanded at some point and reformed in 1987, according to their website in 2008. The records of the Golden Chain Honor Society include their constitution, meeting minutes, member and recepient rosters, correspondence, financial information, induction banquet programs, yearbooks, and other general information about the society. The Golden Chain Honor Society was begun after a student wrote an article in the Technician, proposing the idea of forming an honor society exclusive to NC State which would recognize several seniors who had excelled academically as students during their time at the university, but who had also demonstrated leadership and service to the university and in the community. The Golden Chain Honor Society was formed in 1926, and 12 senior students were selected to be the first members of the "golden chain" of exceptional NC State students. Thereafter, up to 12 rising seniors were selected in the spring of their junior year to form the next "links" in the "golden chain," and were recognized at a "tapping" ceremony at the end of their junior year. The Golden Chain Honor Society remained active as of 2008, at that time having just shy of 900 members ("links") in the Chain. Less

The records of the North Carolina State University Chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi contain information on NC State's chapter, as well as information produced or distributed by the national office of Phi Kappa Phi. NC State's chapter records contain their constitution and bylaws, correspondence, meeting minutes, membership lists, financial information, information on officers, awards, activities, chapter history, and other general records of the chapter. The records from the National Office of Phi Kappa Phi are comprised mostly of publications, and also include official handbooks, constitution and bylaws, brochures, and other literature produced by the national office for distribution to all chapters; as well as some materials on conference gatherings, the history of Phi Kappa Phi, and NC State emeritus professor Wendell H. McKenzie's tenure as national president. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine to act as an honorary society recognizing academic excellence across all disciplines. A chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was established at North Carolina State College (University) in 1923, largely under the direction of W. A. Withers, head of the Department of Chemistry. The records of the Alpha-Sigma Chapter (NC State's chapter) of the Kappa Phi Kappa fraternity include the chapter's by-laws, correspondence, financial information, member information, meeting minutes, photographs and slides, information on pledging and intitiation, and other general information about the chapter, its members, and its activities. Also contained in this subgroup are some materials from the Kappa Phi Kappa National Office, including primarily copies of publications and information packets from national meetings. A chapter of Kappa Phi Kappa, the Alpha-Sigma Chapter, was established at NC State in 1931, initially acting as a branch of the Sigma Chapter, which was established at Wake Forest College (University) in 1926. Membership in the chapter was limited to male students in high academic standing in the education program, who were of at least junior class status. The Alpha-Sigma Chapter remained active through the 1968-1969 academic year, and appears to have begun the 1969-1970 academic year as an active chapter, but went defunct sometime during the fall semester of 1969. The records of the Gamma Upsilon Zeta Chapter (North Carolina State University's chapter) of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity include their chartes and bylaws, financial records, reports to the national office of Lambda Chi Alpha, the chapter's history, and information on the Gamma Upsilon Zeta housemother and her book on the history of the chapter. Lambda Chi Alpha is a social fraternity that was founded in 1909 at Boston University. North Carolina State's chapter (the Gamma Upsilon Zeta Chapter) was installed in 1924, having been initially formed in 1920 as the Pi Alpha fraternity and then later petitioning to join Lambda Chi Alpha. The Gamma Upsilon Zeta Chapter became the 65th chapter of the fraternity at its installation, and remained active until 1998, when financial problems led to the closure of the chapter. Less

These records of the Leazar Literary Society at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) contain information about the society's creation, leadership, and activities in the form of minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and program announcements. A few items provide historical background on the Pullen Literary Society also. The Leazar Literary Society was organized on November 2, 1889, at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). Its rival in debates and other intellectual competitions was the Pullen Literary Society, which was founded around the same time. A short history of the national organization published in 1950 and a 1976 clipping from the Technician are also included. The North Carolina State University company of the National Society of Scabbard and Blade appears to have been installed at the college by 1922 and remained active through 1975. The National Society of Scabbard and Blade was founded during the school year of 1904-1905 at the University of Wisconsin to foster the ideals and practice of military education in colleges and universities.
