Records relating to projects and initiatives undertaken by the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management in the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University and related programs for the years 1924 - 1985. These records contain articles, brochures, budget records, clippings, photographs, memoranda, and correspondence. Included is information on faculty members, lectures, and department finances. The School of Textiles (later College of Textiles) at North Carolina State University began classes in the fall of 1899, primarily due to Daniel Tompkins's interest in having a textile program at what was then the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Since 1963, the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management (TATM) has functioned as a discrete department (albeit under several different names) within the the College of Textiles. Of course, the College of Textiles has conducted research since its earliest days, both independently and in collaboration with corporate and government partners. The collection of College of Textiles photographs depict the school's people, activities, and facilities from its early days in Tompkins Hall to a few recent photographs from Centennial Campus. Many photographs of equipment and machinery are included, as well as laboratories and other facilities. A portion of the collection also features students of the college and their academic activities, including class portraits and Style Shows. The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) was founded in 1887 and expanded the textiles program through the early 1910s, and beyond. The Textile Exposition and Style Show provided students the opportunity to display their work. Research efforts of the college have aided war efforts and contributed to medical developments. Documentation in the academic series includes information regarding Textiles College and extension projects and research, and Textiles College brochures and catalogs. Budget material includes monthly and year-to-date budget and expenditure reports of the College, the North Carolina Textiles Foundation, as well as other personnel and financial aid paperwork. The Textiles Extension correspondence series consists of correspondence to and from textile industry representatives regarding applied research requests and information on instructional services provided by the College of Textiles. This subgroup was formerly numbered UA 130.5. The Office of Textile Extension and Applied Research works to enhance the relationship between the North Carolina State University College of Textiles and the textile industry. The Extension office offers continuing education opportunities to industry partners. The Applied Research program sponsors research projects to supplement education and encourage participation in industrial research and development. The Albert Harvey Grimshaw Papers contains a photocopy, a microfilm copy and the original letter of indenture of apprenticeship document for Amos James Grimshaw to James Mather Daltry, to learn the "Art, trade, and business of a reed maker and Heald Knitter." This document was registered in the county of Lancaster, England, on 1867 May 11. There is also a typewritten copy of the "Grimshaw Newsletter," 1944. This newsletter covers events in the lives of Grimshaw's classmates at North Carolina State University. Rhode Island native Albert Harvey Grimshaw (1883-1949) received his education from the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, North Carolina State College, and the New Bedford Textile School. He was a pharmacist and wrestling coach before becoming an instructor in chemistry and dyeing at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917. In 1925 Grimshaw left New Bedford for North Carolina State College, where he served as professor of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing for 24 years. During this time, he published articles in almost all of the textile trade journals in the United States. He was a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and the American Institute of Chemists. In 1948, The N.C. The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996. The Charlotte Ruth Nelson Patterson Papers consist of a bound scrapbook of newspaper clippings from 1927 and 1928, mainly dealing with Charlotte Nelson's dual graduation from North Carolina State College and Meredith College; letters written to her father, Dean Thomas Nelson of the North Carolina State College School of Textiles; and two undated photographs, one of Charlotte Nelson as a young woman and one of Charlotte Nelson Patterson after her marriage. After petitoning the faculty council in the fall of 1926, Charlotte Ruth Nelson became one of the first female graduates of North Carolina State College (1927). She also earned a degree from the all-female Meredith College the same year. By doing so, she became the first student in North Carolina to earn degrees from two colleges at the same time. Both degrees were in mathematics. She taught school for 35 years. Other female students receiving degrees in 1927 were Jane S. McKimmon and Mary E. Yarbrough. Less

The University Archives Photograph Collection Visual and Performing Arts Photographs, circa 1899-1904, 1923-1997 (bulk 1954-1997), primarily document the activities of students in the arts programs administered by the North Carolina State University Division of Student Affairs, including the Music Department, the Crafts Center, the Gallery of Art and Design (later the Gregg Museum of Art and Design), the dance program, and the University Theater program. They also cover some of the professional visual and performing arts events that have taken place at NC State University, including concerts, dance performances, and theater performances by artists and companies not affiliated with the university. In addition to photographs, this collection includes some negatives and other items. Although student activity in the performing arts, particularly in a dramatic arts club, dates back to the late 1800s at North Carolina State University (then the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts), visual and performing arts at NC State University officially began with the formation of the Music Department in 1924. In the late 1950s and early 1960s the Division of Student Affairs, along with the leadership of the Erdahl-Cloyd Student Union, sought to expand arts offerings to the student body. Toward that end, the NC State University Craft Center, Gallery of Art and Design, University Theater, and dance program were established.
