The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

The Jesse P. Spoon Letters are ten letters documenting Spoon's life as a student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University). The letters are addressed to Robert A. Coble of Oakdale, North Carolina, who was Spoon's classmate at what Spoon calls "Oakdale School." This may refer to Oakdale Academy, which was a preparatory school in Alamance County. Spoon discusses military training, classes, and social receptions at the college, as well as other notable events like measles outbreaks. There is also some discussion of events in Oakdale, a community in the Patterson Township of Alamance County, North Carolina. The first seven letters were written from January to April 1903, with the following three being from March and May of 1904. Jesse Page Spoon was born on 20 January 1883 in Alamance County, North Carolina. He may have attended preparatory school at Oakdale Academy. In 1902 or 1903, he began attending North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University), where he earned a Bachelors of Agriculture in May 1908 and a Master of Science in 1909. In 1909 he worked at the college as a laboratory assistant in anatomy and physiology. He next attended the Kansas City Veterinary College in Kansas City, Missouri, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Surgery degree in 1911. He practiced veterinary medicine in Burlington, North Carolina, where he worked with Dr. W.A. Hornaday and served on the Burlington School Board and as Secretary of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. He married Mable Clare Lea on 30 December 1915. They had two children, Margaret Jane Spoon and Mildred Lea Spoon. Jesse Page Spoon died on 29 October 1931 in Burlington, North Carolina. Less

The Joellen Secondo Collection of Animal Protection Materials contain publications and a dog collar dating from 1896 through 1917. More specifically, these publications include five issues of “Our Dumb Animals,” a monthly periodical published by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The collection encompasses the 1904 January issue of “The Ladies’ World” magazine with an article entitled “Pets for Women.” Also included is a dog collar with metal plaques reading: J. W. to K. G and Czar Nicholas/Kitty Gordon/145 Falmouth St/Manhattan Beach (Kitty Gordon was an actor in the early 20th century. In 1916, she acquired a Russian wolfhound named Czar Nicholas). Finally, the collection contains “Exercises for Schools in Massachusetts,” a pamphlet published by the American Humane Education Society in 1917. Joellen Secondo has served as a Companion Animals and Engagement Specialist at Humane Society International. Humane Society International (HIS) was created in 1991 as an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and since then pursues animal rights and welfare work globally. It implements programs in Asia, Africa, and Americas. More specifically, the HIS operates to foster the human-animal bond, protect wildlife, rescue cats and dogs, and promote animal-free testing and research, and fight cruelty against animals. Less

The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. The collection dates range from 1891 to 1987, but the bullk of the material is from 1940-1965. The collection provides information about Harrelson's military career, 1917-1919; his tenure as a faculty member and administrator at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1919-1929 and 1933-1953; and his service as director of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, 1929-1933. The Joseph Alfred Miller Papers contain items from Miller's student days (1900-1904) at the college that eventually became NC State University. Included are the jacket and caps of his cadet uniform; photographs showing student life, athletics, and campus buildings; student publications; and one of his engineering textbooks. A few of the photos show Miller's future wife Ella Duckett and his college roommate William Joel Patton. Some of the student publications and the textbook contain his marginalia (the textbook contains a note about Professor Carl Riddick). The collection also contains some college publications from the 1930s when other Miller family members attended NC State, and this includes athletics programs. The Josephine Scott Hudson Papers include research papers, correspondence, journals, photographs, postcards, news clippings, and ephemera. The bulk of the material contained in this collection relates to Cassius Rex Hudson's career with the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service and to the career of W. Kerr Scott, former governor of North Carolina. There is also material relating to Hudson's nephew, former North Carolina Governor Robert W. Scott. Daughter of Robert W. Scott of Alamance County, North Carolina, and sister of W. Kerr Scott, governor of North Carolina (1949-1953) and United States Senator (1954-1958), Josephine Scott married Cassius Rex Hudson in 1911. Cassius Rex Hudson, a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute, was hired by Seaman Knapp in 1907 to serve as the Farmer's Cooperative Demonstration Work agent for the state of North Carolina. In 1922, he was placed in charge of "Negro Demonstration Work" for the state of North Carolina and worked as the director of that program until his death in 1940. Less

The L. R. Harrill Papers contain writings, speeches, journals, personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, certificates of merit and appreciation, agricultural publications, and mementoes that are associated with Harrill's student days at North Carolina State College and his long tenure, 1926-1963, as the director of North Carolina's statewide 4-H program, the largest in the nation. The material provides insight into Harrill's personal life and documents his involvement with the 4-H movement on a local, national, and international level, including the International Farm Youth Exchange. Represented are letters Harrill wrote as a student at North Carolina State College to his mother and father from 1918 to 1922. L. R. (Lera Rhinehart) Harrill (1897-1978) was director of North Carolina's statewide 4-H program from 1926 until 1963. Less

The Lawrence Earl Hinkle papers include correspondence, writings, lecture notes, publications, and academic journals, 1853 to 1964. It chiefly documents Hinkle's career as an educator and linguist at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1915-1955. Educator and linguist, Lawrence Earl Hinkle served as Assistant Professor of Modern Languages to Professor of Modern Languages at North Carolina State College from 1915 until his retirement in 1955 and as Head of the Department of Modern Languages beginning in 1922. At North Carolina State, he established the Translation Service, founded Sigma Pi Alpha, a national honorary language fraternity, and revised the registration and final examination system. Less

This black-and-white photographic print is a group portrait of the Leazar Litarary Society. There are 15 students shown, 7 wearing sashes. The same photograph appears on page 173 of the 1904 Agromeck (college yearbook), where it has the caption "Debaters May Entertainment" and it faces a page with information on the society's May 1903 event. The Leslie N. Boney Architectural Papers document the work of Wilmington, North Carolina, architects Leslie N. Boney Sr., and Leslie N. Boney Jr. from projects done in conjunction with architect James F. Gause in the 1920s through projects of Boney Architects, Inc., in the 1980s. Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996.
