The Dan U. Gerstel Papers contains numerous scientific publications on a variety of topics related to the study of genetics, cytology, plant pathology, and crop science, collected by Dan U. Gerstel during his career as a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University and in the genetics department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Mekhon Vaitsman le-mada) in Rehovot, Israel. The material is international in scope and covers a period of six decades. In addition to scientific publications, the collection contains personal and professional correspondence, a diary, genealogical research materials, newspaper clippings, and articles related to stamp collecting. The Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859 - 1924) Papers, 1883 - 1955, contain items relating to Hill's career at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as an English professor, Vice President, and President. Many of the materials document Hill's professional career, particularly his appointment to and resignation from the presidency of the College. There are also manuscript drafts of texts Hill wrote on the Civil War and on his father, General Daniel Harvey Hill. A small number of personal materials are also included. The bulk of the materials dates from 1908 to early 1920s. Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859-1924) was an educator, college president, writer, and historian. He received a B.A., M.A. and Doctor of Literature degree from Davidson College. In 1908 he became the third president of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, where he served from 1908 to 1916. The D. H. The Daniel William Greenlee Journals document the life of a plantation owner in western North Carolina during the Reconstruction era and into the post-Reconstruction era. The journals span January 1st, 1874-March 23rd, 1891 with two gaps in coverage: January 6th, 1881-April 26th 1883 and April 13th 1884-February 15th 1885. His journals comment chiefly on the weather, a variety of farming and business activities, social visits to neighbors and relatives, and his personal and religious thoughts. Daniel William Greenlee resided on the family's Burke County (present-day McDowell County) plantation, called Turkey Cove, in close proximity to his father, brother, sister, and aunt. The David Stathem Weaver Papers include materials documenting Weaver's career in agriculture, his tenure at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the Department of Agricultural Engineering, his work in the Agricultural Extension Service, his role in promoting rural electrifcation, and his dedication to the improvement of the farm community. The collection includes speeches, correspondence, clippings, documents, photographs, and scrapbooks, from 1918 through 1966. Also included is an 1862 Civil War letter written by Weaver's maternal grandfather, David Stathem. David Stathem Weaver (1896-1966) was an agricultural engineer, educator, and administrator. Weaver was professor, then department head of the Agricultural Engineering Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), 1923-1948. He was principal engineer, 1936-1937, for the Rural Electrification Administration in Washington, D.C., where he continued work that he had already begun in North Carolina. Weaver was also specialist in agricultural extension, 1937-1948, and associate director, 1948-1950, then director, 1950-1961, of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. Less

The Dennis Werner Collection of Seed Catalogs contains approximately 90 annual publications from W. Atlee Burpee & Co. and contains 17 annual publications of other nursery and seed companies, including Gurney's, Schell's, and Iowa Seed. The date span is 1883 to 2013, but there are some gaps. In addition to the annual catalogs, the collection contains such ephemeral materials as envelopes, order forms, inserts about products, price lists, money order forms, catalog request forms, and other materials. Dennis Werner, a professor in the Horticultural Science at North Carolina State Univeristy, has collected historical seed catalogs (primarily Burpee Seed) throughout his career. W. Atlee Burpee (1858-1915) began a mail-order company in the 1870s, and he experimented with selective breeding and hybridization for the improvement of animals and plants. By the 1890s Burpee had became the largest seed company in the world. The business's annual catalog (begun by 1881) was an important marketing tool, and it played a significant role in the company's success. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century other nurseries and seed companies also became famous, in part, because of their catalogs. These included Ferry (later Ferry-Morse), Gurney, Iowa Seed, Earl May, Schell, and others. Less

The Edgar Eugene Randolph Papers document the Randolph's career as a professor of chemical engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) as well as his personal life, and activities of his wife, Ora Huffman Randolph. Materials contained in these files include letters, 1937-1948, from Randolph's former students, many of which concern their careers in the field and their involvement in World War II; annual reports, statistics, budget materials, lists of graduates and other information, 1927-1945, concerning the development and growth of the Department of Chemical Engineering; newspaper clippings and scrapbooks, 1924-1947, about the department, graduates, and chemical engineering issues in Raleigh; other materials about chemical engineering, including Randolph's writing and technical research; personal materials, including correspondence, 1916-1961; information on the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs and the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, belonging to Randolph's wife, Ora Huffman Randolph; and photographs of Dr. and Mrs. Randolph, and their families. An alumnus of the University of North Carolina, Edgar Eugene Randolph (1878-1954) began his teaching career as a professor of English. He taught at Lenoir-Rhyne College and at Texas A&M University before teaching at the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). He became head of the Chemical Engineering Department in 1924 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1946. Less

The Elizabeth Vann Moore Family Papers contain family history materials as well as extensive records about the day-to-day operations of Sterling Cotton Mills in Franklinton, North Carolina, which several family members managed. Business papers include correspondence, financial reports, and audits documenting Sterling Cotton Mills' founding in 1895, bankruptcy during the Great Depression, and revival in the 1940s and 1950s. Family history materials include correspondence, journals, scrapbooks, and photographs of the Moore and Vann families, which document their experiences from the turn of the twentieth century through World War II and later. Elizabeth Vann Moore (1912-2010) of Edenton, North Carolina, was born in Henderson, North Carolina, to John A. Moore, Sr., and Mabel Vann Moore. Mabel's father, Samuel Cannady Vann (1852-1924), established Sterling Cotton Mills in 1895. Following the Great Depression, the company went into bankruptcy and was purchased by Mabel at auction. Her husband, John Sr., ran the company alongside her brother, Aldridge H. Vann, until John Sr.'s death in 1947. Elizabeth's brother, John A. Moore, Jr., then took over the company until his death in 1982. An historian and historic preservation activist, Elizabeth collected extensive family history materials, including material related to her family's role in managing Sterling Cotton Mills. She also preserved business correspondence, financial reports, and audits of the company. Less

Ernest L. Gooden (1903-1970) was born in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. Gooden graduated from Duke University, and taught at Glen Alpine High School in Glen Alpine, North Carolina, from 1927 to 1930. He joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an assistant scientific aide in September of 1930. Gooden had a 40-year career as a physicist with the USDA and specialized in pesticides. The Ernest L. Gooden Papers consists of materials documenting Gooden's career with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. Drafts and manuscripts of articles by Gooden include "Report of Physical Properties of Pesticides" and "Optical Crystallographic Properties of DDT." Research files contain notes, graphs, charts, and articles with labels like "Viscosity," "Zinc Arsenate," "Sodium Arsenite," and "Rotenone." This collection also contains electron microscope micrographs, patents and patent applications by Gooden, and hundreds of 3 x 5" x-ray diffraction data cards published by the Joint Committee on Chemical Analysis by X-Ray Diffraction Methods. These x-ray diffraction cards contain notes, calculations, and authors and their publications. Also included in this collection are glass slides, photos and negatives of electron microscope images, approximately a thousand 3 x 4" cards of chemical compounds and other notes, and materials from the annual meetings of the Electron Microscopy Society of America from 1949 to 1966. Five black and white photo cards, one is 3"x6" while the other four are 5.25"x8.5". The contents of the photographs all depict either fir or spruce trees. The smallest photo card was taken by botanist Burton Orange Longyear, and three of the four larger photos were taken by botanist J.G. Lemmon. The fourth is assumed to be taken by Lemmon as well, though his signature is not included on it. John Gill (J.G.) Lemmon (c. 1830-1908) was an American Botanist, Civil War Veteran, and former prisoner of war who acquired an interest in botany while living with his family postwar. He and his wife, Sara Plummer, went on to identify a wide variety of plants in the Western United States, establish the name of Mount Lemmon, and also established an herbarium in Oakland, CA. He was known as “the botanist of the West”.Burton Orange Longyear (1868–1969) was an American botanist, forester, mycologist, and gem cutter. Longyear studied botany and chemistry at the State Agricultural College of Michigan (now Michigan State University). He taught and worked as a botanist at the college before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1903. The Harry Charles Kelly Papers include correspondence, articles, reports, speeches, awards, photographs, artifacts and other items related to Kelly's career as a physicist, science administrator, and educator. Harry Charles Kelly (1908-1976), physicist, educator, science administrator and author, was educated in physics at Lehigh University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1945, Kelly accepted the position of Chief of Science and Technology for the Special Projects Unit of the United States Army. His work helped strengthen cooperative scientific ventures between Japan and the United States. Kelly later worked for the National Science Foundation and, resuming his academic career, served as Provost at North Carolina State University. Less

Henry Emil Bonitz (1872-1921) was a graduate of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1893. The Henry Emil Bonitz Papers contains copies of a 1948 letter from Bonitz's son, John H. Bonitz to J. W. Harrelson and Harrelson's reply. The collection also includes receipts for board at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), which Henry Emil Bonitz paid in 1889 and 1890. The Ira Obed Schaub Papers contain correspondence, news articles, writings, publications, awards, and certificates concerning Schaub's professional life, from his career in 4-H work to his work at North Carolina State's cooperative extension program and as dean of the North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Schaub Papers also includes information about the personal life of Ira Obed Schaub, including his community involvement, travel, and education. A small number of documents concerning Maud Kennedy Schaub, the wife of Ira Obed Schaub, and some materials regarding the Schaub and Kennedy families, are also part of the collection. Correspondence includes letters about general cryptography, articles written by Levine and others, Levine's cryptographic patents book, and cryptographic computer tests. Research contains notes, computer printouts, article reprints, and note cards related to Levine's research interests in cryptography. Writings includes Levine's published and unpublished essays and pamphlets. Teaching Career includes class notes and other student-related material. Collected Works includes articles, books, and bibliographic information of other authors in the fields of mathematics and cryptography. Unprocessed Material contains copies of articles and publications on cryptography. Most of the materials are from Levine's lifetime, but some of the items in the Collected Works series are from as early as 1716. The Jack Levine Papers documents Levine's career as a crytographic researcher and mathematics professor at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1936 to 1995. The collection contains information on Levine's research, writings, university career, and correspondence. His main interests were tensor analysis, geometrics of generalized spaces, differential geometry, combinatorial analysis, theory of symmetric functions, algebraic cryptography and mathematical physics. The James Cullen Williams Orchid Collection contains books and journals about orchids. Journal titles include runs of American Orchid Society Awards Quarterly, American Orchid Society Bulletin, and The Orchid Advocate: Official Journal of The Cymbidium Society of America, Inc., to name a few. Materials range in date from 1868 to 2004. James Cullen Williams was a graduate of the Mercer University’s School of Pharmacy Class of 1962. He lived in Lake Wales, Florida and was a practicing pharmacist there for 50 years. He was also an orchid grower and an accredited judge for the American Orchid Society. Less

The James F. Wright Papers contains membership lists, meeting minutes, and correspondence of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), as well as case reports presented to the Association. Other materials include professional correspondence, reports, notes, articles, and five 16 mm films relating to early use of dart guns and tranquilizing agents. The collection also contains professional certificates, yearbooks from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and pages from a scrapbook. Most materials date from the late 1950s to early 1970s, with a few earlier and later items. James F. Wright was an honorary diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and a researcher in the field of zoological health. He served on the faculty of N.C. State University from 1984 to 2004, and he was a pathologist and consulting clinical veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoological Park. He was the first clinical veterinarian at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and helped establish a national zoo in Senegal, Africa. He is notable for his contribution to refining early dart guns and tranquilizing agents. In addition to the American College of Zoological Medicine, he was a member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Wildlife Disease Association, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Society of Toxicologic Pathologists, American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums, and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. Mattox was a talented amateur musician and director of the North Carolina State University R.O.T.C. Glee Club. Less

This letter, dated December 14, 1883, and sent from John T. Patrick in Wadesboro, North Carolina, to Mrs. A. L. Coble in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, relates details about Patrick's trip to exhibitions in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and Boston, Massachusetts, where he had been promoting North Carolina and encouraging immigration. The letter also reveals Patrick's plan to sell land in North Carolina to northern farmers. Both the original letter and a typed transcription are included. John Tyrant Patrick (1852-1918) was a journalist and resort developer from Wadesboro, North Carolina. Patrick attracted northerners to North Carolina by advertising inexpensive, fertile land in northern newspapers. In 1883, North Carolina Governor Thomas J. Jarvis appointed Patrick as the head of the Department of Immigration. During his tenure, he established the resort towns of Southern Pines and Pinebluff, North Carolina. He also assisted in the in establishing the North Carolina towns of Pinehurst, Roseland, Peachland, Vaughn, and Southmont. Less
