The Harry Charles Kelly Papers include correspondence, articles, reports, speeches, awards, photographs, artifacts and other items related to Kelly's career as a physicist, science administrator, and educator. Harry Charles Kelly (1908-1976), physicist, educator, science administrator and author, was educated in physics at Lehigh University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1945, Kelly accepted the position of Chief of Science and Technology for the Special Projects Unit of the United States Army. His work helped strengthen cooperative scientific ventures between Japan and the United States. Kelly later worked for the National Science Foundation and, resuming his academic career, served as Provost at North Carolina State University. Less

The Ira Obed Schaub Papers contain correspondence, news articles, writings, publications, awards, and certificates concerning Schaub's professional life, from his career in 4-H work to his work at North Carolina State's cooperative extension program and as dean of the North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Schaub Papers also includes information about the personal life of Ira Obed Schaub, including his community involvement, travel, and education. A small number of documents concerning Maud Kennedy Schaub, the wife of Ira Obed Schaub, and some materials regarding the Schaub and Kennedy families, are also part of the collection. Most of the materials are from Levine's lifetime, but some of the items in the Collected Works series are from as early as 1716. The Jack Levine Papers documents Levine's career as a crytographic researcher and mathematics professor at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1936 to 1995. The collection contains information on Levine's research, writings, university career, and correspondence. His main interests were tensor analysis, geometrics of generalized spaces, differential geometry, combinatorial analysis, theory of symmetric functions, algebraic cryptography and mathematical physics. The James Cullen Williams Orchid Collection contains books and journals about orchids. Journal titles include runs of American Orchid Society Awards Quarterly, American Orchid Society Bulletin, and The Orchid Advocate: Official Journal of The Cymbidium Society of America, Inc., to name a few. Materials range in date from 1868 to 2004. James Cullen Williams was a graduate of the Mercer University’s School of Pharmacy Class of 1962. He lived in Lake Wales, Florida and was a practicing pharmacist there for 50 years. He was also an orchid grower and an accredited judge for the American Orchid Society. Less

The James F. Wright Papers contains membership lists, meeting minutes, and correspondence of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), as well as case reports presented to the Association. Other materials include professional correspondence, reports, notes, articles, and five 16 mm films relating to early use of dart guns and tranquilizing agents. The collection also contains professional certificates, yearbooks from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and pages from a scrapbook. Most materials date from the late 1950s to early 1970s, with a few earlier and later items. James F. Wright was an honorary diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and a researcher in the field of zoological health. He served on the faculty of N.C. State University from 1984 to 2004, and he was a pathologist and consulting clinical veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoological Park. He was the first clinical veterinarian at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and helped establish a national zoo in Senegal, Africa. He is notable for his contribution to refining early dart guns and tranquilizing agents. In addition to the American College of Zoological Medicine, he was a member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Wildlife Disease Association, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Society of Toxicologic Pathologists, American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums, and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. The Lawrence Earl Hinkle papers include correspondence, writings, lecture notes, publications, and academic journals, 1853 to 1964. It chiefly documents Hinkle's career as an educator and linguist at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1915-1955. Educator and linguist, Lawrence Earl Hinkle served as Assistant Professor of Modern Languages to Professor of Modern Languages at North Carolina State College from 1915 until his retirement in 1955 and as Head of the Department of Modern Languages beginning in 1922. At North Carolina State, he established the Translation Service, founded Sigma Pi Alpha, a national honorary language fraternity, and revised the registration and final examination system. Less

The Mary Yarbrough Papers (1825-2012) contains a variety of materials including correspondence, photographs, publications, music books, news clippings, photocopies, and artifacts, most of which document Yarbrough's life and career, as well as her family history. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough (1904-1984) was one of the first women to receive a graduate degree (M.S. in chemistry, 1927) from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Mary Yarbrough served on the faculty of Meredith College for many years (1929-1972). In 1941 she received a Ph.D. and Phi Beta Kappa key at Duke University. At Meredith College she headed the chemistry and physics department, and she became an assistant director of the cooperative education program. Less

The collection also contains publications published from 1822-2018. This collection was created by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA or MSPCA-Angell). The MSPCA is a non-profit organization that protects animals, relieves their suffering, advances their health and welfare, and prevents cruelty. The MSPCA was founded in 1868. The Maurice Hugh Farrier Papers includes personal and professional correspondence, entomology research materials, and a reprint collection of articles and works by internationally acclaimed scientists writing on mites and other insects. The collection chiefly documents Farrier's research and professional activities during his tenure as a professor of Entomology and Forestry in the departments of Entomology and Forestry at North Carolina State University. One of Farrier's main subjects of research was the Veigaiidae (Acarina). In March 1957 he published A Revision of the Veigaiidae (Acarina), which is included in this collection, as is Mites of the Superfamily Parasitoidea (Acarina: Mesostigmata) Associated with Dendroctonus and Ips (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) (December, 1969). Farrier also wrote numerous articles for scholarly journals, news columns in various North Carolina newspapers, and other works. The bulk of the collection consists of a comprehensive compilation of original publications, reprints, and annotated photocopies of articles on mites written by scientists from all over the world. Farrier and his student Michael K. Hennessey used these articles to compile and publish Soil-Inhabiting and Free-Living Mesostigmata (Acari-Parasitiformes) from North America: an Annotated Checklist and Bibliography and Index (1993), a taxonomic index on mites. Farrier and Hennessey also co-authored Systematic Revision of Thirty Species of Free-Living, Soil-Inhabiting Gamasine Mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) of North America (1988) and Mites of the Family Parasitidae (Acari: Mesostigmata) Inhabiting Forest Soils of North and South Carolina (1989). Maurice Hugh Farrier received a B.S. in Zoology and Entomology in 1948 and a Masters degree in Entomology in 1950, both from Iowa State College. Farrier subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Entomology from North Carolina State College (University) in 1955. That same year, he was appointed Assistant Professor at North Carolina State in the Department of Entomology. In 1960, Farrier was promoted to Associate Professor of Entomology, and in 1961, he became Associate Professor of Entomology and Forestry. In 1971, Farrier was promoted to full professor. The Mitchell Bush Papers contain research and teaching notes, presentations and materials, journals and publications, correspondence, field studies, field notes, research projects, training materials, anesthesia records, digital media such as floppy disks, CD-ROMS, zip disks, film strips, videotapes and 35mm slides documenting medical studies, surgeries and wildlife in national and international settings. Many of the files relate to Mitchell Bush's work with the National Zoological Park through the Smithsonian Institution. There are also separate series about his work with giraffes and his work with pandas. Almost the entire collection is related to Bush's work as a zoo veterinarian. Although the collection has been divided into series to assist with the research process, some topics may be covered across multiple series. For example, there is a series about the work that Bush did with pandas, but pandas may also appear in other series such as in the Subject Files or the Professional Organizations series. The majority of the materials in the collections date from 1950 to 2012. A few earlier items or reprints of earlier items are also included. Mitchell (Mitch) Bush is a leader in the field of modern zoological medicine. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, in 1965, and his career has been focused on pioneering studies and clinical practice in zoological and comparative medicine. He has worked for the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., since 1972, and beginning in 1994 he has served as the Chief of Veterinary Services at the Smithsonian Conservation & Research Center. He holds a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and is a visiting scientist at Kruger National Park in South Africa. Less

Nathaniel C. Browder Collection of Cryptography Manuals and William Thomas Prestwood Diaries, includes twenty-eight original Prestwood diaries, most of which are encrypted, and enlarged copies of several of the diaries. Also included are a copy of The Enciphered Diary of William Thomas Prestwood 1808-1859, a description and transcription of the diaries produced by Nathaniel Browder, and two of Browder's World War II-era cryptography manuals. Nathaniel C. Browder worked as a cryptographer during and after World War II. After his retirement he worked on a number of genealogical and local history projects. Among these projects was the researching, deciphering, transcribing, and editing of William Thomas Prestwood's diaries. William Thomas Prestwood, a descendant of the influential Coker family, wrote a ciphered diary from 1808 until his death in 1859. Less

The records of the Office of the Associate Dean and Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service contain reports, correspondence, programs, publications, speeches, minutes, financial information, and committees relating to agricultural research and experiment stations. Also included are materials on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Fiftieth Anniversary of the research stations, the Tennessee Valley Authority, agricultural products, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, individual college departments and their role in experiment station research, and the National Pickle Packers Association. Records include a letter book of the director. Materials range in date from 1878 to present. The North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station was created in 1877, and transferred from the State of North Carolina to the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later, North Carolina State University) in 1889. The Station was jointly run by the two groups, and became a source of contention between the State Department of Agriculture and the University through the early part of the twentieth century. The records of the North Carolina State University Department of Sociology and Anthropology contain correspondence, memoranda, curricula guides, handbooks, study guides, cards from a departmental card catalog, photographs of former faculty, publications, accreditation standards regarding farm policy review, community council, curricula, research progress reports, international programs, community development extension programs, and the Ellen Winston Lecture and Development FundMaterial. These records also include information about a rural economic development training program in Pakistan. This collection primarily consists of the files of Ronald C. Wimberley, Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology Head. Materials range in date from 1862 to 2010. Sociology courses were first offered at State College (now NC State University) in 1920 with the arrival of Dr. Carl Cleveland Taylor and graduate student Carle Clark Zimmerman. Both would later become important figures in the field of sociology. Rural sociology, which sought to improve the quality of life of rural communities, was a focus of the early program. After several iterations, the Department merged with the Department of Anthropology in 1966 to become the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Dr. Selz Mayo was department head from 1966 till his retirement in 1981. Dr. Ronald Wimberley then took over as head until 1985. Less

Collection includes correspondence, administrative files, reports, legal files, logging records, maps, photographs, and negatives, dating from 1869 to 2016. This collection documents the successful efforts of the North Carolina Forestry Foundation to acquire forest lands for North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) for demonstration, teaching, and research while at the same time operating the forest on a profitable basis. Materials range in date from 1869 to 2016. Julius V. Hofmann to set up the forestry program at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1929. One of his immediate goals was to acquire some forestland for laboratory, research, and demonstration purposes. Unable to secure funding from the university or the state of North Carolina, Hofmann determined the only recourse was to purchase the land on a self-liquidating basis. He and some of the college trustees incorporated the North Carolina Forestry Foundation on April 15, 1929, to manage and develop the Poole Woods, a 74.94 acre tract in Wake County, North Carolina, and the first forest obtained by the Foundation.
