The first quasi-gymnasium of NC State was located in the basement of Holladay Hall. Carmichael Gymnasium was built in 1961. In 2007, the Carmichael Recreation Center was opened. In 2009, Campus Recreation and Carmichael Complex, Facilities, and Operations combined to become University Recreation, which was transformed into NC State Wellness and Recreation during the 2017-2018 academic year. It includes cardio and weight training rooms, indoor tracks, racquetball courts, steam and sauna rooms, table tennis rooms, a gymnastics training area, outdoor basketball courts, and 12 outdoor tennis courts. Overall, NC State Wellness and Recreation supports the physical, emotional, and social wellbeing of students.

A significant portion of the material consists of student media publications such as the

Red and White. The materials are dated 1889 to 2021. Working under their longstanding motto of "Students First," the North Carolina State University Division of Student Affairs works to provide "programs and services for students and the larger community to enhance quality of life, facilitate intellectual, ethical and personal growth, and create a culture which engenders respect for human diversity." In this pursuit, the member groups and programs of the Division of Student Affairs, including student media organizations, have produced a number of internal and external publications. MoreThe records of the North Carolina State University Student Health Service include brochures, event notices, blank medical history forms, correspondence, and other informational pamphlets. Brochures and pamphlets produced by the center include topics such as alcohol, disabilities, drugs, rape and sexual health as well as information regarding the center's services and insurance options for students. Materials range from 1966 (prior to the formation of the Student Health Service) until 1994. The North Carolina State University Student Health Service was formed in 1972. Initially, the university had an 80 bed care facility with staff and one part-time physician. The Student Health Center expanded to offer more on-campus care for students. Before the Student Health Service was formed, the university offered students a health insurance option which was overseen by the Student Health Service upon its formation.

The center produced yearly Advisers Handbooks as a resource for faculty serving as academic or vocational advisers to students. Some handbooks have been annotated by Counseling Center staff including William Weston and Murray Downs. Notices and brochures contained in these records pertain to student services offered by the center. The Counseling Center's offices were originally located in Holladay Hall until 1964 when they were moved to 207 Peele Hall. The Center moved in 1976 to a location at 200 Harris Hall. Materials in this collection range in date from 1935 until 1996. The North Carolina State College (later University) Counseling Center was originally located in Holladay Hall and was alternately called the Department of Counseling. Through the early days of the center's existence, the counseling center offered services for pre-college and enrolled students including entrance testing guidance, orientation events, financial aid assistance, vocational and educational guidance, social and personal guidance and special assistance for disabled, academically challenged and gifted students. In the early 1950s, the center promoted the idea of having health professionals on staff at the College. By the 1970s, a Health Center was established as a separate entity from the Counseling Center. As of 2013, the Counseling Center operates as an arm of the Student Health Center and focuses on personal, academic and vocational guidance for students.

The records document the activities of the office and its committees from 1930 to 2000. The North Carolina State University Department of Student Development worked to help college students become competent as adults. This included helping students become more ethical, responsible, enthusiastic about their involvement in human affairs, and optimistic about their future. In addition, the department had a special interest and responsibility in helping students with cultural understanding relating to ethnicity. The Department of Student Development was dissolved sometime during or after 2000, with its member programs each becoming separate departments within the Division of Student Affairs.

MoreThis collection contains announcements, annual reports, applications, architectural drawings and specifications, brochures, bulletins, constitutions, contracts, correspondence, handbooks, manuals, membership lists, minutes, programs, scrapbooks, time reports, and work plans. The records document the activities of the office from 1903 to 1989. From 1908 to 1974, the office of Religious Affairs was nearly synonymous with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), as the records indicate. Hence, the collection also includes the records of the Danforth Chapel from 1955 to 1976, the International Student Center from 1955 to 1965, and the Self-Help Bureau from 1932 to 1941. The Office of Religious Affairs grew out of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the leadership of Edward S. King, who served North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) through the YMCA from 1919 to 1955. The campus branch of the YMCA was established in 1889 and was the site of the following activities and events: regular Sunday services; Bible study classes; a published montly paper; a handbook for freshmen and prospective students; speakers and discussion groups; a game room for students; a barbershop; and the Self-Help Bureau, which helped students secure employment while in college. The YMCA branch existed on campus until 1982.
