John Thomas Brake (1952-2018) was a member of the faculty of NC State University, beginning as an assistant professor of Poultry Science in 1981. MoreThe John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. Mattox was a talented amateur musician and director of the North Carolina State University R.O.T.C. Glee Club.

Included in this collection are his correspondence, notes, and minutes related to the classes he taught, conferences he attended, and committees of which he was a member. In addition to these materials, this collection includes newsletters, clippings, and articles he retained that were related to his work at NC State University and the background research he did while developing the Public History degree program. John David Smith has taught at Indiana University-Purdue University, the University of South Carolina, Southeast Missouri State University, and NC State University before accepting a position at UNC Charlotte. Prior to teaching, he graduated with both a Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and 1977 respectively. By the end of his NC State University career, which began in 1982, he rose through the ranks of the history department to graduate alumni distinguished professor of history and eventual director of the Master's in Public History program, specializing in the Civil War and the history of race relations in the United States.

Additional materials include student work (architectural projects and exercises, life drawings) and awards and certificates. John Erwin Ramsay, Sr., FAIA (1915-1991) was born in Salisbury, N.C., and educated at the University of North Carolina and Yale University's School of Architecture. Following service in the Army, 1941-1946, Ramsay returned to Salisbury to open the second architectural firm in that city. As strong proponents of modern architecture, Ramsay and Associaties were responsible for the design of many modernist residences and buildings, including the Rowan County Health and Agricultural Building, Alderman Studios in High Point, N.C., and the American Square showroom for American Furniture in Thomasville, N.C. Ramsay was also responsible for the restoration of numerous historic buildings in Rowan County, including the Rowan County Court House, the John Knox house, and his firm's offices, a converted early 20th-century residence. He retired from practice in 1989.

MoreThe John Fletcher Miller Papers contains materials related to Miller's involvement with athletics, intramural sports, and the Department of Physical Education at North Carolina State University. The collection contains a biographical essay, a certificate, correspondence, news and yearbook clippings, and photographs. The items date from 1924 to 1972. John Fletcher Miller was an athlete who played one season with the Saint Louis Browns (1912). He served as a coach at the University of Missouri, 1916-1921, and Albion College in Michigan, 1921-1924, before becoming the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at North Carolina State College in 1924. He served as the head of the Physical Education Department and the Director of Intramural Sports from 1924 to 1956. He was also the University's Director of Athletics and the President of the North Carolina Physical Education Association. The Miller Fields on the N.C. State campus are named for him.

MoreThe John Goodwin Collection of Materials on Animal Fighting contains books, journals, underground magazines, VHS video tapes, cassette tapes, DVDs, and other materials related to hog-dog, dog fighting, and cock fighting. The largest part of the publications includes animal fighting magazines and journals, such as the Feathered Warrior and the Gamecock Magazine. Also included are weapons used during animal fightings. Materials may contain images, artifacts, and language related to animal cruelty and abuse that may be disturbing to some researchers. John Goodwin joined the Humane Society of the United States in 2000 as the grassroots outreach coordinator in the Government Affairs department. He created a campaign against animal fighting and animal cruelty. He was involved in lobbying campaigns for animal rights. Goodwin testified before various state legislatures and served as an expert in criminal animal fighting trials.

Includes are exercise and workbooks, mostly for agricultural economics courses. Of note is an eleven page report Parker wrote after a farm management tour in northeastern North Carolina in May 1941, in which he briefly described farms visited in Nash, Edgecomb, Greene, Beaufort, Washington, Tyrrell, and Martin counties. The tour included Farm Security Administration settlements. John Hinton Parker was a student at North Carolina State College (later NC State University) in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He received a B.S. in Agricultural Education in 1942. He was later owner of the Parker Seed Company of Dunn, North Carolina.
