The Charles Parker Papers consist of architectural drawings, notes, and correspondence. All of the architectural drawings (except for a select few) are Parker’s designs, 1924-1929, of the Grove Arcade. The few that are not of the Grove Arcade are Parker’s designs of area homes in the 1920s. The Grove Arcade architectural drawings fall into several different types of architectural drawings. These are: sketches, design development drawings, working drawings, and presentation drawings. The subjects of these drawings are the completed building, the exterior façade, floor plans, exterior detail elements (such as engravings), and structural engineering. In terms of material composition, the Grove Arcade architectural drawings are either graphite on tracing paper, brown prints, or watercolor on heavier paper. Besides architectural drawings, there are handwritten notes by Parker and architectural supply lists. There are also several letters written by one of Parker’s clients, and a newspaper clipping advertising a Grove subdivision. From 1924 to 1929 Charles Parker (1885-1961) worked as an architect in the construction of the Grove Arcade, a shopping center in Asheville, North Carolina. The Grove Arcade was commissioned by local multi-millionaire E. W. Grove in the beginning of Asheville’s Golden Age. It spans a city block, is five stories high, and is decorated with engravings and other detail work. Parker was a well-known architect in Asheville for his work on residential homes. The Grove Arcade thrived as a shopping center in the 1930s, but spent the rest of the 20th century as an office building. The Charles Pearson Papers consist of biographical materials, professional materials, and photographs documenting Pearson's family and childhood, student days at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), and career as a civil engineer in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Charles A. Pearson (1875-1966) was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1894. During a six-decade career, he was first a partner in an architectural firm, then worked for various engineering firms, contractors, and railroad companies, supervising the construction of many highway and railroad bridges, and other civil engineering projects, in North Carolina and the South. The Charles Romeo Lefort Papers contains the newsletter, "Seven Up" which was sent to a group of students who graduated from North Carolina State College in 1937. The collection also includes correspondence between Lefort and Dwight Durham, C.S. Gale and Hall Morrison. A graduate of North Carolina State College (1932), Lefort was Assistant Dean of Students (1932-1941, 1946-1947) and Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics (1941-1942) at North Carolina State College. This collection contains Charles Wilson Suggs's notes, data, publications, papers presented, reports, photographs, and sketches, primarily on the topics of tobacco mechanization (tobacco harvesters and transplanters) and equipment ergonomics. Born in 1928, Suggs received his B.S.A.E. in 1949 and Ph.D. in 1959 from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), where he then joined the faculty. His research interests were tobacco mechanization and human-factors engineering. He developed one of the first mechanical tobacco leaf harvesters. Less

This collection is made up of correspondence, professional administrative papers, instructional materials, technical reprints, and research reports belonging to North Carolina State University emeritus professor Charles William Stuber, who conducted research in the use of molecular markers that aid in the identification and mapping of corn genes. Most of the collection contains reprints, papers, and articles authored by other scientists and collected Stuber. Nebraska native Charles William Stuber earned a B.S. in 1952 and an M.S. in 1961 at the University of Nebraska. He received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Experimental Statistics from North Carolina State University in 1965 and was a member of the genetics faculty at North Carolina State University from 1965 to 1998. The Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition Records primarily document two events sponsored by the Charlotte Research Institute: the Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and the Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition. The collection is divided into two series, one for each event. The records include programs, sponsorship packages, speaker invitations, talking points, agendas, press releases, surveys, speaker biographies, logos, photographs, presentations, executive summaries, applications, and judging packets. This collection consists of both physical and digital materials. The materials are dated from 2005 to 2010. UNC Charlotte established the Charlotte Institute for Technology Innovation (now the Charlotte Research Institute) in 2000. The insitute's mission is to foster research partnerships between the university and businesses, including in the areas of bioinformatics, nanotechnology, and biotechnology. To that end, the Institute established and co-sponsored the Charlotte Biotechnology Conference and the Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition, which have been held annually beginning in 2002. The Biotechnology Conference brings together biotechnology, business, and research professionals to highlight regional biotechnology initiatives and investment trends in the Charlotte area. The Five Ventures Business Innovation Competition offers start-up and early stage entrepreneurs an opportunity to improve their strategy and compete against other innovative companies. Less

The Charlotte Ruth Nelson Patterson Papers consist of a bound scrapbook of newspaper clippings from 1927 and 1928, mainly dealing with Charlotte Nelson's dual graduation from North Carolina State College and Meredith College; letters written to her father, Dean Thomas Nelson of the North Carolina State College School of Textiles; and two undated photographs, one of Charlotte Nelson as a young woman and one of Charlotte Nelson Patterson after her marriage. After petitoning the faculty council in the fall of 1926, Charlotte Ruth Nelson became one of the first female graduates of North Carolina State College (1927). She also earned a degree from the all-female Meredith College the same year. By doing so, she became the first student in North Carolina to earn degrees from two colleges at the same time. Both degrees were in mathematics. She taught school for 35 years. Other female students receiving degrees in 1927 were Jane S. McKimmon and Mary E. Yarbrough. Less

The Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright Papers, 1767-1990, include correspondence, photographs, research notes, transcriptions, and blueprints. Material was gathered by Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright for her study of the practice of building in North Carolina between 1865 and 1945 and includes information on the administration of the grant project, photographs and manuscripts from the book written by Brown, as well as research and reference files used in the project. Professor Dr. Chen-Loung Chen died on November 14, 2009 in Raleigh, NC. He was born on October 20, 1930 in Taipei, Taiwan and received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.In 1972, Dr. Chen joined the faculty of the Department of Pulp and Paper Science at North Carolina State University, where he researched and taught for more than 30 years. The papers of Chester J. Lange, a prominent North Carolina veterinarian, are largely comprised of correspondence and organizational documents relating to his activities with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association). Also included are newspaper clippings documenting his professional accomplishments. Information about the establishment of a veterinary school at North Carolina State University is included, as well as programs from conferences, flyers, and research notes. Chester J. Lange (April 14, 1910 - September 26, 1994) was a prominent veterinarian in Greensboro North Carolina. He received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell in 1932 and an M.S. degree in biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1938. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served in World War II as a captain in the Veterinary Corps before opening an animal hospital in Greensboro. He was active in the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (formerly called North Carolina State Veterinary Medical Association), serving as secretary-treasurer and later as president. He was also involved with the Carolina Kennel Club and the Humane Society of Guilford County, and was the recipient of the NCVMA’s Veterinarian of the Year award. Less

Also included is information (including keyboard instructions) on the carillon in the Memorial Bell tower on the North Carolina State University campus. Chris Gould has been a professor of physics at North Carolina State University, beginning in 1971. His reserach specialized in nuclear physics, especially neutrino physics, parity and time reversal symmetries, and other areas. Gould holds a B. S. degree in physics from Imperial College, London (1965); and M. S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Pennsylvania (1966, 1969). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society. This collection is comprised of approximately 110 sports cards for North Carolina State University athletes. Mostly cards are for football players, but some are for men's basketball players. Cards are from the players' colleges as well as professional careers. They range in date from circa 1970 to 2006, although some are undated. Christopher J. J. Thiry is a collector of sports cards. He lives in Golden, Colorado, and is a librarian at the Colorado School of Mines. He is the author of Guide to U.S. Map Resources. Less

This collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, songs, stickers, financial records, and other internal documents, 1969 to 1980, of the Citizens for Ramsey Clark organization. These materials focus on the activities of the organization and the political life of Ramsey Clark. Most of the items relate to the efforts of the Citizens for Ramsey Clark to obtain a 1972 Presidential nomination from the Democratic Party for Clark. A sample of Ramsey Clark's writing is also included. The Citizens for Ramsey Clark organization existed from 1970 to 1980. The organization's membership included primarily politically liberal North Carolina State University faculty members. When the group formed in January of 1970 in Raleigh, North Carolina, its primary goal was to help Clark receive the 1972 Democratic Party nomination for President. The members of the group met weekly at the NC State University's Faculty Club on Thursday nights for dinner. Less

This collection contains reports and periodicals regarding the city of Kannapolis and the North Carolina Research Campus. The reports, primarily issued by or for the city of Kannapolis, date from 2006-2007. The magazines, issued by the city of Kannapolis, date from 2007-2011. Kannapolis, North Carolina, originated as a textile mill town in 1906 when J.W. Cannon purhcased farmland between Salisbury and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1908 the first mill at Kannapolis opened. Kannapolis officially incorporated in 1984. The mills went through several owners including the Cannon family, the Pacific Holding Company, Fieldcrest Mills, and its final owner the Pillowtex corporation. After the mills closed their doors for the final time in 2003, government officials and city planners in Kannapolis initiated a process to redefine the mill town as a biotechnology hub through the development of the North Carolina Research Campus. The Claire Necker Papers contain notes, drafts, compilations of images, clippings, artifacts, and publications relating to Necker's research interests on cats. The writings and illustrations in the collection includes notes and drafts as well as illustrations Necker compiled during research for publications. There are numerous notebooks listing publications. Additionally, there is artwork and artifacts relating to cats or other animals. The correspondence series is fairly short with mostly letters to Necker. A portion of the correspondence is with Guy Bogart, who traded lengthy typed letters with Necker and two other correspondents. Much of the material is undated, but likely dates from the 1960s-1980s with some clippings dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, or earlier. Claire Kral Necker was born Claire Kral Nemec on 16 October 1917. In 1939 she married Walter L. Necker, who was then completing a BS in zoology at the University of Chicago. She and Walter shared interests in science and bibliography. Walter worked with a variety of organizations as, at various times, scientist, librarian, curator and rare books cataloger. Claire earned Master's degrees in Zoology and Chemistry (when and where is not documented, though it was sometime before 1968), and after World War II she and Walter started Aardvark Books, a mail-order antiquarian book business. Claire and Walter divorced in 1968, and she found work at a local library. Claire had for some time pursued a career as a free-lance writer, but in 1969 she published her first book, Cats and Dogs (A. S. Barnes). Necker's other works include The Natural History of Cats (Delta, 1970), Supernatural Cats; An Anthology (Doubleday, 1972), Four Centuries of Cat Books (Scarecrow Press, 1972), and The Cat's Got Our Tongue (Scarecrow Press, 1973). She died 19 March 2010 in Pawling, New York. Less

The Clarence Hamilton Poe pamphlet contains Christmas wishes and an essay entitled A Call to All Who Love the South, in which he addresses southern culture and race relations. Clarence Hamilton Poe (1881 - 1964) became the editor of The Progressive Farmer in 1899 and formed the Progressive Farmer Company in 1903. He served as both president and editor of the company from 1903 until 1953, and retired as president in 1954. He then became the chairman of the board of directors and senior editor. Poe advocated better agriculture, health, and education for the people of North Carolina and the South. He was the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees at North Carolina State College from 1920 to 1931, and a member of the Consolidated University of North Carolina Board of Trustees from 1931 to 1955. He received honorary degrees from several schools, including North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) and the University of North Carolina. Less

The Clyde F. Smith Papers contain literature, reprints, articles and books primarily pertaining to the insect family Aphididae, of the Order Homoptera. Two books, Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World (1972) and An Annotated List of Aphididae (Homoptera) of North America (1978) are indexes of the papers. Research materials consist of literature by noted authors from around the world who study aphids, their life cycles, reproduction variables, climate conditions, host plants and biological and chemical control. This collection is an extension of the Zeno Metcalf Collection. Also included are index cards on various Aphididae, which include an annotated generic and specific index to all literature cited in Smith's 1972 Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World, a host plant index indicating the aphids associated with each host and the source citing this association, and an index of aphid-parasitoids associations. Clyde F. Smith joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College Entomology Department in September 1939. He served as Head of N.C. State's Entomology Department from 1950 to 1964. Smith received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural College). He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1939. In 1972-1973, Smith served as president of the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America. Less

The Coffee Family Collection includes architectural records acquired by the Coffey family through their family association with John W. Coffey & Son, the Raleigh building contracting firm. The firm was founded by John W. Coffey. John W. Coffey, born 1869, founded John W. Coffey and Son, a construction firm that rose to prominence in Raleigh, NC. He started in the building trade in 1899, when he formed a business partnership with George C. Bonniwell. The partnership ended in 1900 as Bonniwell chose to move elsewhere and he decided to start his own firm. John W. Coffey and Son found success building up the suburbs to the north and west of Raleigh as well as partaking in many commercial projects across the eastern part of the state.
