The University Archives Photograph Collection Visual and Performing Arts Photographs, circa 1899-1904, 1923-1997 (bulk 1954-1997), primarily document the activities of students in the arts programs administered by the North Carolina State University Division of Student Affairs, including the Music Department, the Crafts Center, the Gallery of Art and Design (later the Gregg Museum of Art and Design), the dance program, and the University Theater program. They also cover some of the professional visual and performing arts events that have taken place at NC State University, including concerts, dance performances, and theater performances by artists and companies not affiliated with the university. In addition to photographs, this collection includes some negatives and other items. Although student activity in the performing arts, particularly in a dramatic arts club, dates back to the late 1800s at North Carolina State University (then the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts), visual and performing arts at NC State University officially began with the formation of the Music Department in 1924. In the late 1950s and early 1960s the Division of Student Affairs, along with the leadership of the Erdahl-Cloyd Student Union, sought to expand arts offerings to the student body. Toward that end, the NC State University Craft Center, Gallery of Art and Design, University Theater, and dance program were established. In addition to these student arts activities, the Division of Student Affairs Arts NC State subdivision brings in performers from outside the university for special events on campus. Less

The Vegetarian Resource Group Records contain journals about vegetarianism, nutrition, ecology, ethics, animal rights and world hunger. Materials are dated from 1982 to 2023. The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on vegetarianism and the interrelated issues of health, nutrition, ecology, ethics, and world hunger. Design course at North Carolina State University. General paper topics include: professional values and goals, personal values and goals, history of the design profession, and 20th century practitioners: their values and goals. Often reflective in nature, the papers reinforce Shogren's reputation as a professor who made his students think. This collection consists of student papers written for Professor Vernon F. Shogren. These papers were written primarily for his Conceptual Issues in Architecture and Vernon F. Shogren was born and raised in Cloquet, Minnesota. In 1950 he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota. He earned a Master of Architecture degree from the Massachussettes Institute of Technology in 1952. As a Fulbright Scholar during 1952-1953, he earned a certificate from the Technische Hogeschole, Delft, Netherlands. Afterwards Shogren returned to the United States and began teaching at the North Carolina State University School of Design. He left the school in 1955 but returned in 1961 to teach until his retirement in 1992. He distinguished himself as a challenging teacher who focused on conceptual issues. In 1964-65 and 1969-70, Shogren was named to the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, and from 1972-75 he held a Distinguished Alumni Professorship. Shogren's practice experience includes a number of years with Eero Saarinen and Associates in addition to projects such as the London and Oslo embassies and University of Chicago Law School. Contained here are six sheets, 24 inches by 30 inches, of prints made from black-and-white charcoal, pencil, or crayon drawings by Bailey. Because of the inferior paper quality, these may be proofs. The subject matter of all six is industrial, and they may depict textile factories in the northeastern United States. They date from circa 1910. Vernon Howe Bailey was an artist who lived from 1874 to 1953. He studied at both the Pennsylvania Museum School and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and early in his career he was an illustrator for American newspapers. The Veterinary Medical Publications and Other Materials collection primarily contains journals, pamphlets, and booklets from the 1910s to the 1960s. There are some items from the 1970s and several items of correspondence from 1999. Topics include care of animals such as cows, horses, and dogs. Many publications are about diseases of these animals. The Virginia Handley Papers consist of a wide range of documents and publications, as well as a few audio-visual materials and artifacts, pertaining to animal advocacy, animal rights organizations and animal welfare issues. The collection includes materials relating to animal protection legislation, especially in California; numerous animal rights organizations; and activist issues relevant to specific animal groups. Many of the items pertain to issues in California, where Handley lobbied for animal rights in Sacramento beginning in the 1970s. Virginia Handley (1946-2014) was a prominent animal advocate and animal rights activist in California, and was credited as one of the best animal activists in the state. In 1970, she and her mother Grace helped co-found Animal Switchboard, an information hotline on animal-related problems located in San Francisco. Beginning in the 1970s, Handley lobbied for animal protection laws in California and is credited for many of the state's present laws. She also coordinated the Fund for Animals based in San Francisco. When the Fund merged with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in 2005, she continued as California lobbyist for HSUS. In 1980, Handley founded PawPAC, California's Political Action Committee for Animals for which she served on its board until her death. Less

The collection of Voorhees & Everhart Architectural Drawings, 1952-1963, of the High Point Friends Meeting House contains original architectural drawings (as well as scans) of the Georgian Revival-style High Point Friends Meeting House in High Point, North Carolina. Louis Francis Voorhees (1892-1974) was a prominent architect practicing in High Point, North Carolina, during the middle of the twentieth century. In 1938, he formed a partnership with Eccles D. Everhart, another established High Point architect. Many of Voorhees's architectural commissions were in High Point, a city that was experiencing rapid growth because of the expansion of textile manufacturing. The High Point Friends Meeting House was constructed in 1955 and 1956 from a design by a member of the congregation, Howard Olive, who was also employed with the firm Voorhees and Everhart. Less

The W. C. Jackson Papers contain diaires, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera belong to W. C. Jackson and his family. The material dates from 1891 to 1951. The bulk of the collection's content consists of family correspondence relating early 20th-century family life in North Carolina and a set of diaries maintained by Jackson that recounts farming and weather observations in North Carolina during the first half of the twentieth century. The William Joseph Peele Papers, 1888-1923, contain items relating to Peele's tenure on the Board of Trustees at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) between 1899 and 1901. The majority of material details administrative topics discussed and changes made during that period. A small number of personal materials are also included. William Joseph Peele (1855-1919) was a lawyer, an author, and an active participant in organizing state history agencies. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1879. As one of the founders of the Watauga Club, Peele was instrumental in the establishment of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Less

The Dateline Noon/Farm News report was a segment on the WRAL-TV daily newscast. Each segment included a feature story about an aspect of North Carolina agriculture. The program was primarily presented by Ray Wilkinson and Ruth Sheehan. The films contained in this collection are dated from 1970 to 1978. The WRAL Farm Program Films Collection contains audio/visual material produced by Capitol Broadcasting Company that aired on the WRAL-TV noon newscast. The collection consists of 16 mm film reels. The films range in date from 1970 to 1978 with undated films grouped at the end of the collection. Less

The Wade L. Roberts Papers consist of a letter of reference for Wade Livingston Roberts from Josephus Daniels, editor of the Raleigh News and Observer, dated September 11, 1928; a copy of Daniels's letter accompanying the letter of reference; and a photograph of Roberts and an unidentified United State Army lieutenant standing in front of an Army buccaneer airplane at Langley Field, Virginia, in 1928. The Wall Family Papers document the lives of John Nelson Wall; his wife, Frances MacGregor Wall; their son, John Nelson Wall Jr.; along with various members of their extended family, friends, and professional acquaintances, between 1900 and 1992. The bulk of the collection is correspondence written between the years of 1920 and 1960, much of which was exchanged between John and Frances from 1933 to 1949, during their extended courtship and early years of marriage. The Wall family of Morven, North Carolina, includes John Nelson Wall (1904-1992); his wife, Frances MacGregor Wall (1909-1949); and their son John Nelson Wall Jr. (1945- ). John Nelson Wall Sr. worked for the North Carolina Transportation Department in Anson County, North Carolina. Frances MacGregor Wall taught home economics and was a 4-H home demonstration agent in Cleveland County, North Carolina, then assistant 4-H club leader for the state of North Carolina. John Nelson Wall Jr. was a faculty member in the English Department at North Carolina State University. Less

Wallace Carl Riddick (1862-1942) served as President of North Carolina State College from 1916 to 1923. In 1920, he admitted two Serbian students to the College, which led to his being awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of St. Sava by King Alexander of Yugoslavia in 1931. The Wallace Carl Riddick Papers contain newspaper clippings, correspondence, and other materials related to the students, as well as the text of a speech given by Riddick in 1913. Less

This collection contains the audio recordings from 1971-1998 of interviews conducted early in Wolfram’s career with speakers of Appalachian English, Puerto Rican English, Vietnamese English, Ozark English, and African-American vernacular English. The collection also features transcripts of many of the interviews and manuscripts of Wolfram’s resulting work on these dialects. Walt Wolfram is currently (2016) the William C. Friday Distinguished Professor of English Linguistics at North Carolina State University. Wolfram has pioneered research on social and ethnic dialects since the 1960s, authoring or co-authoring 20 books and more than 250 articles on varieties of American English. Since joining NC State University faculty in 1992, Wolfram's has concentrated his efforts on preserving the rich linguistic heritage of North Carolina and raising public awareness of its cultural significance. He established the North Carolina Language and Life Project (NCLLP) in 1993, a project that focuses on research, graduate and undergraduate education, and outreach programs related to language in the American South. The Walter Austin Bullock and George Tarry Bullock letters consist of letters written by the brothers to members of their family when they were students at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). They contain details about various events, including the November 1891 football game between Wake Forest College and "the University" (possibly UNC Chapel Hill), the 1891 State Fair, the farm work they did for the college and the professors, and getting uniforms. Williamsboro, N.C., natives Walter Austin Bullock and George Tarry Bullock entered North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as freshmen in 1891. Walter graduated with an agricultural degree in 1895, and then worked for a big farming concern near Bainbridge, Ga. He then moved to Puerto Rico, where he raised shade tobacco for American Tobacco Company. He and George later bought a large farm near Red Springs, N.C., which was very successful until 1922, when the price of cotton dropped. He continued farming on a smaller scale until his death in 1943. Due to illness and financial problems, George did not complete his college coursework. After leaving North Carolina State, he worked at Edgecombe Test Farm, and then worked in Georgia and Puerto Rico. After the Red Springs farm failed, he returned to Puerto Rico and worked for the American Sugar Cane Company. He then went to Cuba with the Cuban Land and Leaf Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of American Tobacco Company. He stayed in Cuba until his retirement in 1952. He died in Red Springs in 1955. Less

The Walter Clyburn Taylor Papers consists of papers relating to textiles and their manufacture. These papers represent Taylor’s work for both his sophomore course on carding and spinning and for courses taken during his junior year at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). Included are handwritten and typewritten essays on a variety of subjects. Also present are tables of mechanical settings and several technical drawings for machinery, as well as articles clipped from technical journals and affixed onto pages of the notebook. All the materials in the notebook date from between 1911 and 1912. Born in 1889, Walter Clyburn Taylor attended the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and graduated in 1913 with a degree in Textile Engineering. He served in the military during World War I and was stationed in Europe for more than a year during the hostilities. After the war, he returned to North Carolina and worked in the textile industry. The Walter L. Smith Papers, 1934-1986, contain speeches, minutes, correspondence, programs, a scrapbook, a diary, memos, lists, newsclippings, photographs, and memorabilia from Smith's military service in World War II and his involvement with NC State University. The scrapbook is titled "The Success Story of A. E. Finley." Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Walter Little Smith (1914-2007) graduated from North Carolina State College in July 1935 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering (aeronautical option). During World War II, Smith served in the U.S. Army. He became a lieutenant colonel and was Chief of the Supply Division, Engineering Section, Advance Section Communications Zone (ADSEC). He helped set up the Engineering Section in France beginning on 9 June 1944 as part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Smith served several years on the building committee for what was then North Carolina State College. When the Board of Governors for the UNC System was formed in 1971, individual Boards of Trustees were formed for each campus as well. Smith was appointed to the NC State University Board of Trustees, and served on the board from 1972 to 1981. NC State University awarded Smith the Watauga Medal in 1983 for his service to the school.
