Jaroslav Jan "J.J." Kabatnik was born May 28, 1907, in Bohemia, the westernmost region in the present-day Czech Republic. During his early life, Kabatnik studied Engineering and Architecture at the University of Prague and married Jarmila "Mila" Cihak. In 1936, he represented Bohemia in Summer Olympic Games (Hitler's Games). When Communists took over his home country, Kabatnik and his wife escaped from the country and became refugees in a camp in Germany. In 1948, he was listed as a refugee passenger of a ship to Casablanca, Morocco. In 1953, Kabatnik and his wife arrived in Greensboro, NC, USA. In Greensboro, the talented architect was known as "the refugee Czech Olympian." He started his career in architecture in the United States in 1954. three years later, he started working with the famous Ed Lowenstein who exclusively partnered with the famous builder Eugene Gulledge, the founder of "Superior Construction Company." In 1958, Kabatnik left Lowenstein firm and joined Superior Construction Company as an architect. He continued his partnership with Eugene Gulledge until 1976. Kabatnik died in 1995 in Greensboro. The Susan Toplikar Papers contain brochures, postcards, and imageries of three exhibitions – “Spirit and Stillness,” (Weems Gallery, Meredith College, 2008); “Birds: 1988-1999” (Hager Smith Design Community Gallery, 2008); and “The Continuous Process: The Artist as Teacher/The Teacher as Artist, Gallery of Art and Design” (University Student Center, North Carolina State University, 1990). The collection also includes postcards and mail-art correspondence, as well as letters of recommendation and approval letters in support of her submission in 1985 for promotion to Associate Professor, a statement of teaching philosophy, a resume, course syllabi, class projects, student work, exhibition design, artwork publication, public art projects, and creative research supporting her promotion to Full Professor. Susan Toplikar taught in the College of Design at North Carolina State University from 1976 to 2010. Susan Toplikar was born in 1952 and died in 2020. She received degrees from the University of Missouri – Kansas City (BA in Studio Art, 1974) and from Washington University (M.F.A. in Sculpture, 1976). She also undertook postgraduate studies in Illustration, Animation, and Graphic Design in the School of Visual Arts of New York from 1980 through 1983. Toplikar joined North Carolina State University in 1976 and taught in the College of Design until 2010. During her career, Susan Toplikar received various teaching awards, including NC State University Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award, 2000-2002; College of Design Recognizing Teaching Excellence Award, 1999; and the University Outstanding Teacher Award, 1998-1999. The Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf Papers contain materials relating to Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf’s research, professional, and teaching interests. Included are research studies, grants, animal patient records, lab tests, organizational materials, veterinary medicine course materials, publications, born-digital content, and some personal papers. A significant portion of the collection documents Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s research and clinical work in the field of zoological health, environmental medicine, and veterinary medicine. Other materials document Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf’s professional activities in organizations such as the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM), the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA), the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), and the International Association of Aquatic Animal Medicine (IAAAM), among others. The remainder of the collection contains papers highlighting her role as faculty member for the NC State University, College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. The collection ranges in date from 1968 to 2017. Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf is well-known for her role as the first female veterinarian at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and the first full time female faculty member specializing in zoological medicine in North America. In 1990, Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf joined the NC State University CVM faculty in the Department of Microbiology, Pathology, and Parasitology. During her tenure at the CVM, she co-founded and directed the country’s first three-year residency in zoological medicine. As of 2016, she is a research professor with NC State University's Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology program, an intercollegiate degree program administered by the CVM, the College of Natural Resources and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. During this time, she has also conducted extensive clinical and research studies with an emphasis on infectious diseases, immunology, and environmental medicine, specifically relating to aquatic animal, feline, amphibian, and avian populations. Dr. Kennedy-Stoskopf has quite an extensive role in several veterinary medicine organizations across the country, including the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The T. C. Howard Papers on Synergetics, Inc. consist of architectural drawings and related documentation on some Synergetics, Inc. (as well as Charter Industries, Inc.) projects throughout the United States and abroad from 1952 to 1990. Among the drawings and records are plans for geodesic and other domes in North Carolina, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, Florida, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Afghanistan. The architectural drawings showcase dome engineering, such as geodesic domes, octetrusses, and Charter-Sphere Domes. Thomas C. Howard (1931- ) was the designer, architect, and engineer for Synergetics, Inc. from 1955 until 2006. In 1958 Howard graduated from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in nuclear engineering. This collection contains 1 thermometer filled with red liquid. The thermometer is 16 x 1 cm, and has a temperature range of -30 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Also included in this collection is a cylindrical case for the thermometer, measuring 18 x 2 cm. The exterior of the case includes the company name, Taylor Instrument Companies, and the item number: no. 6110. Presented by Betty Doyle. Ms. Doyle obtained the thermometer from her father, Paul Greene, who was a herdsman caring for Guernsey cattle. The thermometer was used on Brookberry Farm, Forsythe County, North Carolina from the 1940s until 1970, when all the cows were sold. The farm was owned by Bowman Gray, Jr. Less

This collection contains journals, photographs, newspaper clippings, a videotape, and slides, as well as manuscripts of Terrence M. Curtin's memoirs and the history of the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Materials range in dates from 1951 to 2012 with the bulk of the materials falling between 1968 and 2004. Dr. Terrence M. Curtin, 1926-2020, came to North Carolina State University in 1973 to start a veterinary science department in the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He was appointed the first dean of the new School (later College) of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University on Feb. 1, 1979. Less

This 35-page report is a handwritten history and evaluation of the De Laval reaction turbine. It includes 11 diagrams, including rotor [design] and buckets, bucket details, a heat chart showing friction losses, a section of the nozzle, theoretical and actual velocity diagrams, the design of the bucket, governor details, the reducing gearing, the standard machine, and a chart showing the results of the tests conducted. While the author of this report is not known, it may have been created by John William Cox, who received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1915. Cox also received a master's degree in civil engineering. from the college in 1921. Carl Gustaf Patrik de Laval (1845-1913) was a Swedish engineer and inventor who made important contributions to the design of steam turbines and dairy machinery. In the 1880s he built a small steam turbine turned by jets of steam, and in 1890 added a nozzle to increase the speed of the steam entering the turbine. De Laval's innovations are used today in rocket design and reduction gearing. Less

Textile industry-produced marketing materials, reports, brochures, catalogs, etc., complete, in many cases, with textile samples documenting the effectiveness of particular dyestuffs on the various fabrics. Also included are a small number of government documents. The Institute of Textile Technology transferred its library to North Carolina State University's Burlington Textiles Library when it moved its operations to the NC State University Centennial Campus. The Burlington Textiles Library had maintained for years a vertical file for quick reference. After the merger of the two libraries, the Burlington Textiles Library transferred the historically valuable materials from both collections to the NC State University Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The Greenway Team, Inc. Records contain papers, audiovisual material, digital media, and a website, which document the greenway, trails, and open space projects created by two organizations--The Greenway Team, Inc., (2005-present), previously called Urban Edges Inc. (1978-2006), and South Suburban Park Foundation (1981-2004). Project files contain master plans, in-progress and development plans, reports, designs, maps, correspondence, notes, company records, newsletters, magazines, informational pamphlets, book publishing information, books co-authored and contributed by Robert M. Searns, Charles A. Flink, and Charles Little, project presentation boards, and presentations with slides. These documents pertain mainly to projects in Colorado, followed by cities in Arizona, California, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, and Utah. The Greenway Team, Inc., led by Robert Searns and Bill Neumann, has designed numerous greenway and trail master plans, regional greenway and open space plans, interpretive planning and exhibits, and greenway and open space maintenance services for multiple cities in Colorado and eleven states throughout the American West, Southwest, and Midwest. Operating out of Littleton, Colorado, the firm is an active company and is extending its reach into China. The Greenway Team operated as Urban Edges, Inc., from the mid-1970s until 2005/2006. The South Suburban Park Foundation is a nonprofit formed in 1979, which focuses specifically on greenway and trail enhancement and creation in the South Metro area of Colorado. Less

The Hosiery Association (originally the National Association of Hosiery & Underwear Manufacturers) was based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Hosiery Association was founded in 1905 and was a global trade organization advocating for hosiery manufacturers. The collection includes industry directories (2002, 2004); annual hosiery statistics (1999); hosiery advertisements (1938); and the founding charter (1910) of the National Association of Hosiery & Underwear Manufacturers, which was later renamed The Hosiery Association. The Peter C. Sugar Drawings of the Potential Reconstruction of a Modified Version of the Raleigh House contains some drawings and born-digital content created by architect Peter C. Sugar. These architectural drawings and files demonstrate Sugar's work on a proposal for a modified version of the Raleigh House, originally designed by architect Eduardo Catalano. Eduardo Catalano's iconic modernist Raleigh house (built in 1954 and demolished in 2001) was going to be reconstructed as a pavilion on NC State University's campus. In 2004, Catalano proposed to the university the construction of the pavilion as part of his architectural legacy. The pavilion was originally planned for construction on the eastern end of the Court of North Carolina, but there was strong opposition against the location by many members of the campus community, so Catalano withdrew his offer in May 2005. Peter Sugar's later drawings and proposal for a modified version of the Raleigh House on Centennial Campus in 2009 also did not come to fruition. Less

The issues contain articles of particular interest to the parents of NC State students including items on public safety, events, programs, and computing on campus. Materials range in date from spring of 1989 to fall of 1990. The State Scene was published by the North Carolina State University Parents' Association (later Parents and Families Services) to notify parents of events and initiatives on campus. This collection contains printed textile mill maintenance and inspection notes from the Textile Development Company. These notes include maintenance and inspection procedures for machinery in card rooms, spinning rooms, and weaving rooms. Also included in this collection is a handwritten 4 month plan for inspections and employee training at an unidentified mill. Sidney Small Paine, a cotton manufacturer from Boston, organized and was president of the Textile Development Company in 1924. The company had offices in Boston and Greensboro, North Carolina. The Textile Development Company surveyed all aspects of textile mills operations, making recommendations and supervising their implementation for textile mills in the United States and abroad. Bound typescript, extensively annotated and corrected by hand, illustrated with ink sketches and two plates. The typescript comprises an essay of about 12,000 words on three factors determining architecture: prevailing climate, material available, and social or religious custom. Arguments are accompanied by references to specific buildings in Ireland, England, Europe and elsewhere. Inscription on first page "An essay by RM Butler awarded the essay Prize of the Architectural Association of Ireland, 1897." R. M. (Rudolph Maximilian) Butler (1872-1943) was editor of The Irish Builder from 1899 and a commentator on architecture in Ireland for the next thirty years. Butler was a leading church architect. He also won the competition to design the University College Dublin (now National Concert Hall) building on Earlsfort Terrace and was head of architecture in the college from 1924 to 1943. Another building in the Dublin area designed by Butler is the former Gorevans Department Store. Less

The Theodore B. Mitchell Papers consists of correspondence, research notes, glass plate lantern slides, and newspaper clippings pertaining to Theodore B. Mitchell's career and his research on "systematic entomology," and in particular his study of bees (which culminated in the publication of the two-volume Bees of the Eastern United States). The Professional Correspondence series contains letters to colleagues in the field of entomology and includes, among others, letters to and from the British Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the College of Tropical Agriculture. The Personal Correspondence series contains letters to friends and family members, as well as letters that document Mitchell's involvement with various civic organizations. Theodore B. Mitchell (1890-1983) was a North Carolina State College professor of entomology for over thirty-five years. During his career, he researched "systematic entomology" and had a special focus on bees.
