This collection contains a book of postcards with pictures of North Carolina State College buildings, USDA Extension Service Handbook on Agriculture and Home Economics, slides relating to tobacco and agriculture in North Carolina, "Tobacco Information for 1966" (published by North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, December 1965), photocopies of "History of Tobacco Extension Program" (as well as an early draft) by Roy R. Bennett, "History of Crop Science Extension," an "Overview of U. S. Tobacco" (9-4-85), and a bound book of correpondence to Bennett on the occasion of his retirement (1966). Roy R. Bennett served as assistant Extension agent in Rowan County, North Carolina, and the Extension agent in Pitt County, North Carolina. After World War II, he joined the Agronomy Department at NC State, where he provided the leadership for the tobacco extension program. Less

The Roy Samuel Ingle Papers, 1940-1985, contains correspondence and personal memorabilia related to Ingle's life as a student at North Carolina State College (later University), his service in the United State Army Air Corps during World War II, and his experience as a geological engineer. Also in the collection are Ingle's student pilot logbooks, ration books from World War II, photographs, and memoirs. Roy Samuel Ingle was born in 1918 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II and later worked as a geological engineer for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He was married to Lois Blanche Eller. Less

The Roy Styring Dearstyne Papers contain materials related to Dearstyne's education, teaching career, and endeavors in the field of poultry science, as well as materials related to his death and the Dearstyne Avian Health Center. Roy Styring Dearstyne was a member of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) Poultry Science faculty from 1922 to 1955, serving as the head of the Poultry Science Department from 1930 until his retirement in 1955. He developed a testing procedure for controlling pullorum disease in poultry, wrote one of the first books in the nation about poultry diseases, and was instrumental in the development and expansion of the North Carolina poultry industry. N.C. State's Dearstyne Avian Health Center, built in 1968, was named for him. Less

This collection contains two documents. The first is a three-page, handwritten letter, dated 2 September 1904, from Royal White to "Mama" and describing his first few weeks as a student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The second document is a handwritten transcription of the letter, made by Linda White, who is Royal White's granddaughter. Royall Edward White was originally from Aulander, North Carolina. He first attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (which later became North Carolina State University) in 1904. He studied civil engineering, and he graduated in 1908 with a bachelors degree in engineering. After graduation, he worked in his profession for 55 years. Less

The Rynn Berry Jr. Papers include record files, books, periodicals, articles taken from periodicals, booklets, pamphlets, leaflets, manuscripts, writing drafts, research notes, interview transcripts, facsimiles, drawings, photographs, correspondence, audio recordings, video recordings, and computer disks, relating to Rynn Berry's interests in vegetarianism, veganism, and animal rights. Rynn Berry, Jr. was an author, lecturer, and activist who dedicated his life to increasing public awareness on vegetarianism, veganism, animal rights, and the religious and ethical aspects of these topics. He was regarded as an expert on the history of vegetarianism, and he wrote many books, articles, book entries, in addition to giving lectures and participating in discussion panels. Less

This collection includes a lithograph print of an S-1 locomotive from the Pennsylvania Railroad. It is initialled by Raymond Loewy. Raymond Loewy was a twentieth century French-American industrial designer. Among his designs was the Pennsylvania Railroad S-1 steam locomotive. The lithograph print in this collection is based on a 1937 design of the S-1 locomotive created by Loewy's design firm. The lithograph was printed at the American Atelier in New York City in 1978. This print is the 8th print out of 300 in the edition. Less

The Sallie Ricks Collection of North Carolina State University College of Design Flyers and Brochures contains mailers about upcoming events. Events include lecture series, exhibitions, gallery openings, and receptions. Materials range in date from 1978 to 1985. The North Carolina State University College of Design offers comprehensive study in architecture, landscape architecture, art and design, graphic design and industrial design. The College of Design admits students through a selective process that ensures a highly motivated and heterogeneous design community. The Samuel B. Tove Papers consist largely of materials, 1962-1967, related to Tove's membership on an advisory committee that formulated proposals for the establishment of a doctoral program in biochemistry at the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). Other materials in this collection document Tove's membership in three other committees at North Carolina State: the program committee of the university's annual Animal Nutrition Conference, an ad hoc building committee on improvements to Polk Hall, and the Watauga Medal selection committee. Samuel B. Tove (1921-1994) of Baltimore, Maryland, was a researcher and professor of animal science and biochemistry at North Carolina State University from 1950 to 1987. A renowned authority on lipid metabolisms, he was a William Neal Reynolds Professor and chair of the Department of Biochemistry. Less

The Samuel S. Scherr Papers document the professional and personal life of Samuel Scherr. The primary focus of this collection is Sherr's career as an industrial designer, but it also includes information about Scherr's private life, especially his time in the Army during World War II. The collection contains patent information, drawings, trademarks, pictures, sketches, videos, correspondence, and personal memorabilia from World War II. The collection spans the early 1940s to 2002. Samuel S. Scherr (1923-2002), industrial and product designer, was president of Scherr & McDermott, a design firm working in the fields of industrial, environmental, and graphic design. In 1955 as CEO and President of Scherr & McDermott, collaborating with the International Cooperation Administration, Scherr helped establish the Korean Small Scale Industry & Handicraft Design Center in South Korea. In 1977, Samuel Scherr became the President of the American Crafts Council, a position he held for two years. Scherr continued his design and marketing work with Samuel Scherr & Partners, Fulton + Partners, and as an individual consultant. Less

The Sanford R. Winston Collection primarily contains documents from the 1930s and 1940s, when Winston was head of the Department of Sociology at North Carolina State College. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, and writings related to Winston's interests in rural sociology, African-American issues, and leadership. Materials about his career activities and the organizations to which he belonged are included in the collection, as well as planning documents and descriptions of the S.R. Winston Music Collection, which was established following Winston's death. Less

Correspondence, 1895-1905 and undated, between Sarah J. Eddy and Albert Leffingwell, chiefly on the subject of anti-vivisectionism. Sarah J. Eddy (1851-1945) of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, was an artist and photographer who was active in reform movements. She was an animal welfare activist and vegetarian, who was instrumental in founding the Rhode Island Humane Education Association. Albert Leffingwell, M.D. (1845-1916) of Aurora, New York, was a physician and social reformer who advocated for vivisection reform. Less

This collection contains statutes, regulations, policies, brochures, newspaper clippings, and memoranda related to student government. Also included are papers pertaining to 1970 Peace Retreat and women's rights. Sarah Smith Ahmad, an NC State University alumnus, majored in political science (1968-1972) and was in Student Government as a representative of the School of Liberal Arts (now called College of Humanities and Social Sciences). She was a member of the Mu Beta Psi music fraternity. She lived in Metcalf dorm when it first opened. Less

The Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill Collection of Papers and Artifacts contains exhibit labels, a drawing, Articles of Agreement, and an iron spindle, all pertaining to the Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill, the first textile mill in North Carolina. Materials range in date from 1813 to 1871, with some documentation dating from 1991. The first textile mill in North Carolina was built before 1813 in Lincoln County, 1.5 miles east of Lincolnton. Michael Schenck built the mill and later partnered with Absolom Warlick to build a second in 1816. Through the 1820s and 1830s the profitable operation of the Schenck mills was a model to many more in North Carolina. The Schenck-Warlick Mill firmly established the Southern Textile industry. Less

Papers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004. Less

The Scott Green Collection of Comics-Related Publications includes magazines, newsletters, zines, and other publications about comics, comic collecting, and pop culture, as well as comic anthology magazines, comic single issues, and magazines of compiled comic strips and political cartoons. Of particular note are the assorted independent zines made by distributed through the Inter-State Amateur Press Alliance (I-SAPA), an amateur press association. Amateur press associations (APAs) were groups of people with similar interests who would each create their own publication and send them to other members of the association. All materials in the Green Collection were published from 1973 to 2005. Poet, author, and journalist Scott E. Green contributed to a number of fields, including speculative fantasy and science fiction poetry. Green’s publications include his Contemporary Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Poetry: A Resource Guide and Biographical Directory; Isaac Asimov: An Annotated Bibliography of the Asimov Collection at Boston University; and several poetry books. His poetry has been published in numerous print and web publications including Amazing Magazine, Space and Time, Strange Horizons, and WRITERS’ Journal. Less

The Scott Green Collection of Speculative Fiction contains magazines, fanzines, review publications, newsletters, and other publications containing or related to speculative fiction, especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Many professional authors are well represented in this collection, including Isaac Asimov, H. P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, Evelyn E. Smith, and Arthur C. Clarke, among others. Also included in this collection is H. G. Wells's The Time Machine in its entirety (Famous Fantastic Mysteries Vol. 11, No. 6), and Isaac Asimov's story S as in Zebatinsky, considered by some to be Asimov's finest intellectual effort (Star Science Fiction). Poet and journalist Scott E. Green has been an active writer in a number of fields, including poetry, in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres.
