The Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Service, Book Research Papers consists of materials used to write and compile the book, Ordinary Women Extraordinary Service: To Family, Community and North Carolina. It contains photographs, letters, notes, correspondences, newspaper articles, digital files, and other paper materials relating to the counties of North Carolina and the activities of the Home Demonstration, Home Economics, and Family and Consumer Sciences organizations from 1911 to 2011. Wilma Scott Hammett was the Executive Director of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Foundation and Extension and Community Association (ECA) Foundation, and a past FCS specialist. She is the co-writer and compiler of the book, Ordinary Women Extraordinary Service: To Family, Community and North Carolina. A native of Wilson County, NC, Hammmett is a graduate of Lucama High School. Dr. Hammett holds a B.S. Degree in Interior Design, M.S. Degree in Housing, and Ph.D. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is Professor Emeritus at North Carolina State University. Less

The Oscar Fletcher Papers contain Fletcher's journals and notes, 1992-2016, as well as his daytimers and calendars, 2000-2008, from when he was a faculty member at NC State University and dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Journals and Notes cover topics that include: scholarships, committee reports, budget reports, College of Veterinary Medicine statistics, student involvement, faculty and staff development, meetings with deans and faculty members, faculty retreat notes, operational plans, senior exit interviews, and student questionnaires. Oscar Fletcher, DVM, Ph.D., was dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University from 1992 to 2004. From 2004 onwards, Fletcher served as a professor in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology at NC State University. The Owen Franklin Smith Architectural Drawings and Papers contain drawings, photographs of and some papers of buildings designed by Owen Franklin Smith from 1927 to 1990. The buildings represented include elementary classroom buildings for colored schools in Fremont, North Carolina and Harrellsville, North Carolina, the Hayes Barton Baptist Church, the office building for the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, residences for local community members, and Page Hall at North Carolina State University. Owen Franklin Smith was believed to be the oldest registered architect in the state of North Carolina when he passed away on September 5, 2012, having practiced for over 65 years. He was born in Benson, North Carolina, on November 26, 1917 and received a degree in Architectural Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1938. During World War II, he supervised the construction of military facilities until his entry in the United States Navy. He worked for Thomas Coooper, William Deitrick, Ross Shumaker and Eric Flanagan Sr. before opening up his own practice in 1946, which he maintained until 2011. The office building for the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation in Raleigh, North Carolina, is one of his best known commercial works. He was a member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church beginning in 1943 and actively served the church as teacher, advisor and architect on three building projects. His work included office buildings, modernist homes, churches and over 200 school projects. He won design awards for the Farm Bureau buildings, Lynn Road School, Bertie County High School and the sanctuary of Hayes Barton Baptist Church. Less

The collection contains sixteen boxes of textual documents and photographs from roughly 1909 to 1984 that pertain to the Oxford Tobacco Research Station, which is just outside Oxford, North Carolina. The bulk of the collection consists of annual research reports from these years (unbound 1909-1947; bound 1948-1965). The annual reports detail the research conducted in the areas of agronomy, botany, entomology, engineering, and pathology. In addition to these reports, the collection also includes correspondence from the 1930s and 1940s, manuscripts and news releases from 1920 to 1984, and research files from 1911 to 1961. The Oxford Tobacco Research Station is located one mile west of Oxford, North Carolina, the county seat of Granville County. It was established in 1912 as a joint program by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA). Over the course of a century of research on tobacco, the Station gained an international reputation as a leading center of tobacco science under the direction of project leaders in Agronomy, Botany, Entomology, Engineering and Pathology. Notable research accomplishments include fertility investigations concerning tobacco plant nutrition, development of the first tobacco varieties with resistance to Granville Wilt and black shank diseases, and the invention of tobacco bulk curing barns. Materials date from 1978 to 2016. Partners for Environmental Justice (PEJ) is an environmental justice group located in Raleigh, Cary, and Garner, North Carolina. PEJ began as a ministry committee of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church of Raleigh, North Carolina; Trinity Episcopal Church of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina; and later St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Cary, North Carolina. The Patrick Rand Papers, 1974-2022, document Patrick Rand’s work, research, and teaching in the field of architectural design and technology. The collection contains drafts, notes, and manuscripts of architectural books authored or co-authored by Rand; course materials for classes and studios Rand taught at NC State University College of Design; conference materials, project documents, awards, and other documents related to Rand’s professional activities; and materials from masonry research projects, workshops, and conferences. The collection includes both physical materials and born-digital files. Patrick Rand is a Distinguished Professor of Architecture in the College of Design at NC State University. He joined the architecture faculty in 1977. His research focus is on the relationship between design and building technologies. Rand’s early research involved air-supported structures and other experimental construction strategies. He has since carried out funded research regarding innovation in masonry construction systems. His expertise now spans a full range of architectural construction materials and systems. Patrick Rand co-authored Materials for Design with Victoria Ballard Bell in 2006, and Materials for Design 2, with all new content, in 2014. Rand also co-authored with Edward Allen Architectural Detailing: Function, Constructibility, Aesthetics in 2007. He completed a substantially revised third edition of this book in 2016. The collection includes a diploma for a master of science in education awarded to Pattie Simmons Dowell by North Carolina State College on July 24, 1930. Patricia "Pattie" Simmons Dowell, from Williamston, NC, was the first student and first graduate of East Carolina University in 1911. She then attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, where she earned a B.S., and North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University), where she earned a master of science in education. She later earned a doctorate of education from New York University. She was a home economics professor at East Carolina University and retired in 1960. She died in 1975 at the age of 84. Less

This collection contains items documenting the professional contributions of Paul F. Roth to the field of computer simulation. It includes materials related to CONVERSIM, a teaching simulation language developed by Roth; publications by Roth and others; and proceedings of simulation conferences. Paul F. Roth earned degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (Physics) and the University of Pennsylvania (Engineering). He retired from Virginia Tech as Associate Professor of Computer Science. During his career he also taught at Villanova University, the University of Maryland, and the University of South Florida. Roth was a pioneer in the field of Computer Simulation and was twice elected as Chairman of the Association for Computing Machinery's simulation sub-group. His career also included affiliation with the National Bureau of Standards, the Burroughs Corporation, Goodyear Aircraft, the Department of Energy, the Department of Commerce, and General Electric (Missile and Space Division). This collection is made up of two series. The first contains pamphlets about maize research from 1934 to 1981, including corn performance test results and hybrid corn yield trials. The pamphlets included are semi-monthly farm reports, weekly weather and crop reports, field crops variety trials, and corn performance studies. There are several issues from three journals - North Carolina Agricultural Statistics, Mississippi Farm Research, and Agricultural Research. Also included is Harvey's dissertation on Hereditary Variation in Plant Nutrition from July 1939. The second series ranges in date from 1945 to 1980. It contains correspondence and reports written by Paul Harvey as well as newsletters and clippings documenting the activities of the Crop Science department. Paul H. Harvey taught at N.C. State for more than fifty years. He was appointed a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor and became the founding head of the Department of Crop Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Science. In 1943 Dr. Harvey introduced "NC 1032," a higher-yielding hybrid corn for North Carolina soils. The new variety was the first of 12 new hybrids Harvey introduced during his career. Less

This collection contains pages from a notebook for classes Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, taught by J.A. Porter. The notebook includes fabric samples, design sheets with drawn and colored weaving designs, and fabric analysis sheets containing numerical analysis of fabric. It also includes laboratory reports, dated October and November 1950, submitted by Paul L. Cabrey. Paul L. Cabrey of Nabertha, Pa., was a student in the School of Textiles, North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering. Textiles 341 and 342, Fabric Design and Analysis, was a course required of juniors in textile manufacturing. The course covered construction of fancy weaves, fabrics backed with warp or filling, fabrics ornamented with extra warp or extra filling, regular and fancy piques, and methods of producing new designs. Students learned to analyze samples of fancy fabrics for design, drawing-in draft, reed plan and chain plan and to calculate how to reproduce fabrics when only a small sample was available. Less

Included are the materials for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse move, work with corrosion resistant alloy steel (MMFX) and reinforced concrete, the planning for the University of Tennessee Arena repair, the Crystal River Nuclear Plant containment investigation, the American Concrete Institute (ACI) reports, conference and workshop proceedings, and instructional materials from Zia's time as a professor at North Carolina State University. Topics covered include Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, reinforced concrete, the Crystal River Nuclear Plant, the University of Tennessee Arena, North Carolina State University faculty, civil engineering, and the North Carolina State University Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering. The materials span the time period 1953-2018, with recent articles and displays reflecting on the success of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse move. For over 50 years, Paul Zia taught, researched, and consulted in many areas of concrete materials, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, and construction. Zia joined the civil engineering faculty at North Carolina State University in 1961. He advised more than 60 masters and doctoral students at North Carolina State University. He conducted sponsored research on many aspects of prestressed and reinforced concrete, including torsion and shear, bond and development length, loss of prestress, applications of high performance and high strength concrete, self-consolidating concrete, jointless bridge deck, and cracking in large prestressed concrete girders. His studies also included fatigue strength of cracked prestressed concrete girders, assessment of high performance concrete bridges, development of non-destructive test method for measuring air permeability of concrete, the use of self-consolodating concrete in highway structures, and the application of corrosion-resistant high-strength MMFX streel for concrete structures, and structural applications of new proprietary materials called Grancrete and Elimix Admixture. Among the subjects included are smuggling and poaching, genetic engineering, drug testing, pest control experimentation, alternatives to animal testing, xenografts, transplants, and military use of animals for wound experimentation. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was established in 1980 with offices in Norfolk, Virginia. The organization now extends throughout the world with affiliates in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, India, Italy, Greece, and Australia. This collection contains material donated by Dr. Perry L. Grady, Emeritus Associate Dean and Professor at the North Carolina State University College of Textiles (COT). Included are course outlines, student works, program advisory committee meeting minutes, photographs, photographic slides and videotapes documenting the history of the North Carolina State University College of Textiles and the textiles industry. Dr. Perry L. Grady has taught and conducted extensive research in textiles in instrument and control system design and development, computer applications, energy utilization and conservation, electrotechnology applications, fiber and yarn production and properties, and garment and textile care. The Perry-Wynns Fish Company Records contain the business records, including financial, payroll, sales, and fishing information, of the Perry-Wynns Fish Company (alternatively known as the Perry-Wynns Fishery) of Colerain, North Carolina, on the Chowan River. The papers date from 1947 to 2002. The Perry-Wynns Fish Company was formed in 1952 when L. D. Perry and Leo Wynns formed a partnership to run a herring packing plant in Colerain, North Carolina on the western shore of the Chowan River. Incorporated in 1966, the company was, for decades, the largest freshwater herring fishery in the world, packing both herring and herring roe under the Tidewater Brand, the Bertie Brand and Chowan's Best. In September 2003, Hurricane Isabel destroyed nine of the fishery's eleven buildings, putting the company out of business. Less

The Peter Batchelor Papers, 1967-2010, contain correspondence, administrative papers, urban design studies, computer printouts, doctoral papers, graphic materials, and industry publications relating to Batchelor's career as a professional urban planner and his administration of the American Institute of Architects, North Carolina’s (AIANC) Urban Design Assistance Program. Also included are VHS tapes of his lectures and exhibition materials created by students documenting Batchelor's time as a professor of design and urban planning at North Carolina State University. Born in London, England, on May 22, 1934, and died on April 15, 2020, Peter Batchelor earned a Bachelor of Architecture (honors) from the University of British Columbia in 1960, Masters of Architecture and City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966, and a Doctorate in City Planning from the latter institution in 1972. He taught at North Carolina State University’s School of Architecture from 1968 until 2007, when he retired as Professor Emeritus. Batchelor is also a licensed practitioner in architecture and city planning and former director of the American Institute of Architects, North Carolina (AIANC) Urban Design Assistance Program which provides interdisciplinary problem-solving teams to communities. The Peter Bochenek Landscape Architecture Papers consists of architectural drawings and project files for Peter Bochenek's landscape architecture projects dating from around 2000 to 2015. Most of these are residential projects located in North Carolina, with one commercial project for the Residence Inn. Peter Bochenek is a notable landscape architect in the Triangle region of North Carolina who has been in business since 1977. He received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University, then his Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University. He conducted landscape studies in Edinburgh, Scotland, as well as Italy, France, and England, and received the prestigious Elbert Weinberg Prize for Excellence in Landscape Architecture, Sculpture and Drawing. Bochenek currently runs a firm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, named Peter Bochenek and Associates, Inc., which specializes in landscape architecture and environmental sculpture. Less
