The North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) Land-Grant Centennial took place in 1962, marking the hundredth anniversary of land-grant colleges and universities. The centennial was celebrated at both the national and state level, with efforts beginning in or before 1959. The NCSC Land-Grant Council was responsible for events throughout 1961 and 1962 relating to the centennial. Rudolph Pate acted as Chairman of the council.

MoreThe North Carolina State University, Committees, Learning in a Technology-Rich Environment (LITRE) Team Records include a quality enhancement plan dated 2004. Learning in a Technology-Rich Environment (LITRE) was developed as part of the accreditation of North Carolina State University by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The quality enhancement plan was aimed at enhancing learning with technology opportunities available to students and faculty. Research groups were comprised of faculty, staff, and students and focused on educational infrastructure, student information fluency, faculty engagement, learning resources and educational technology applications, and e-learning environments. As a result of research, a forum, and surveys, five ares were targeted for implementation: expanding the classroom technology improvement plan, implementing and testing the new standard for technology in a limited number of classrooms, deploying a new classroom-based technology learning system, establishing pilot technology-enhanced workspaces, and initiating a faculty-support grants program. The plan was developed throughout 2002 and 2003, with a final report submitted in February 2004.

Materials range in date from 1994 to 2011. The North Carolina State University Marine Sciences Council was established in 1995 to advise the Provost and Chancellor on affairs affecting marine science research, outreach, and teaching. The Council consisted of faculty from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Because faculty were split between colleges, the Council provided a central focal point for marine sciences concerns. The Council played a prominent role in assessing and evaluating the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) based in Carteret County.

MoreRanging in date from 1919 to 1966, the North Carolina State University Memorial Tower Committee records document the conceptualization and construction of the Memorial Tower on North Carolina State University's main campus. This collection chiefly contains correspondence, reports, and financial records. These records document the committee's interactions with architect William H. Deacy of New York; the J. D. Sargent Granite Company of Mt. Airy, N.C.; the Works Progress Administration; and other individuals and companies. There are also blueprints of the tower. The North Carolina State University Memorial Tower, popularly known as the Belltower, stands 115 feet tall and is one of North Carolina State's main landmarks. Vance Sykes, class of 1907, and other alumni, formed the Memorial Tower Committee in the 1920s with the hope of erecting a monument to honor the thirty-four State College (later North Carolina State University) students and alumni killed in World War I. The Memorial Tower is a landmark of North Carolina State University's campus and has become central to several school traditions, including the housing of class rings inside the Tower the night before graduation and the illumination of the Tower with red light on significant dates, including athletic victories of North Carolina State.

Materials range in dates from 1990 to 1991. The North Carolina State University Mission Review Committee was established in 1990 under the leadership of Chancellor Larry K. Monteith. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors, which has the statutory authority to establish the mission of the University of North Carolina constituent institutions, asked each campus to review its mission and to propose revisions as necessary. The Mission Review Committee consisted of faculty, staff, students, faculty senate members and North Carolina State University Board of Trustees. This committee appears to have been dissolved sometime after 1991.

Max Gardner Award was established in 1949 to recognize the faculty member from among all University of North Carolina (UNC) system schools who has "...made the greatest contribution to the human race." Nominations for faculty representatives are collected at each university during the fall of the academic year, and one to three candidates are selected from among those nominees to represent each university. From this pool, one or two faculty members are chosen in the spring of the academic year by the UNC Board of Governors' Committee as the recipient(s) of the O. Max Gardner Award for that academic year.At North Carolina State University, the O. Max Gardner Award nominees are selected by a committee reporting to the Provost's Office.

The Committee was appointed by the North Carolina State College Dean of Administration, Colonel J. W. Harrelson. The committee members were faculty of North Carolina State College. The records include patent policy and procedures, patent and invention disclosures, agenda, minute and meeting notes, annual reports, examples of patent and invention diagrams, Invention management brochures and articles of incorporation of the North Carolina State College Research Foundation. In 1940 Colonel J. W. Harrelson, Dean of Administration of North Carolina State College (later University), appointed a committee of faculty members to make recommendations on institutional policy governing patents and inventions developed in the laboratories of the college and to prepare papers, by-laws and other documents necessary for the establishment of a research foundation at the college. The name of the corporation was the North Carolina State College Research Foundation. The purpose of the corporation was to promote educational objectives by encouraging, fostering and conducting scientific investigations and industrial research and by training and developing persons for the conduct of such investigations and research. The Patent and Invention Committee was also responsible for reviewing patent applications and patent disclosures and for issuing patents to corporations or individuals.

MoreThe records of the Physical Environment Committee at North Carolina State University contain meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, annual reports and other reports, committee membership rosters, and other information regarding the activities of the committee in their duties to monitor the physical environment of the campus. Materials range in date from 1932 to 2010. The Buildings and Grounds Committee was established at North Carolina State College in or before 1932 to consider matters related to the aesthetic appearance of the campus. In the committee's early years, this meant primarily considering issues of landscaping and other campus beautification, as well as adornment (and other decorative considerations) for the buildings on campus. In 1970, the Buildings and Grounds Committee was accused of becoming lax in these responsibilities, and was reorganized as the Campus Planning and Environment Committee, with duties to include a more wholistic responsibility for directing all matters related to the physical environment of the campus at North Carolina State University. In 1986, the committee was renamed the Physical Environment Committee. This committee existed until the 2016-2017 academic year, when it was dissolved.

MoreThe Preprofessional Health Sciences Review Committee Records include memos, correspondence, flyers, and other records produced by the North Carolina State University Preprofessional Health Sciences Review Committee from 1979 to 1992, with a gap from 1981 to 1989. While the purpose of the committee was to review and recommend students from NC State University to preprofessional health sciences programs, the information contained within the collection primarily concerns committee duties such as establishing contacts the admissions departments of these programs, maintaining members of the committee, and electing chairs of the committee. Later records contain averaged data about students who were accepted to preprofessional health sciences programs and information about program requirements that the committee would need in order to better assist future applicants. The North Carolina State University Preprofessional Health Sciences Review Committee is a group that reviews students' professional school application packages. The committee has been renamed the North Carolina State University Health Professions Review Committee. This committee is comprised of faculty from different areas that review all medical, dental, optometry, physician assistant and pharmacy applicants who choose to have their files reviewed by the committee and a composite submitted on their behalf. The committee makes a "university committee recommendation" for each applicant reviewed and submits this along with the student's "composite" review committee recommendation to each school to which they ask to have their file sent. The committee began in 1975 according to a piece of correspondence in the collection and exists in the present as of 2012, but there is no clear mention of specific people associated with beginning this committee. During the time of the collection that dates from 1979 to 1992, Dr. John Roberts and former Chancellor Dr. James L. Oblinger. At that time, Oblinger was Associate Dean of Academic Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

MoreThe records of the Radiation Safety Committee at North Carolina State University include correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, reports and annual reports, and handbooks and other procedural information concerning the operation of the nuclear reactor and the use of radioisotopes on campus. Also inclued are some meeting minutes from the Reactor Safeguards Advisory Group, an associated component organization of the Radiation Safety Committee. The Radioisotope Committee was established in or before 1950 to oversee the use of radioisotopes on the campus of North Carolina State College, largely in conjunction with operations of the nuclear reactor. In 1953, the Radioisotope Committee recommended the establishment of a permanent, more official committee to take on these responsibilities (as well as to oversee the actual running of the nuclear reactor), and the Radioisotope Committee was thus replaced by Chancellor Harrelson with the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes in September of that year. In 1969, the Committee on Safety and Health for the Nuclear Reactor and Radioisotopes was renamed the Radiation Protection Council, and has since been renamed the Radiation Safety Committee. This committee continues to be active as of 2010.

Materials range in dates from 1969 to 1985. The Registration and Records and Calendar Committee of North Carolina State University was established in April 1969 by the Executive Committee of the University Board of Trustees. It is charged with providing advice and recommendations to the University Registrar regarding the university calendar, and other registration and records procedures. The committee typically meets once early in fall semester and once early in spring semester. An additional meeting each semester may be scheduled if needed to discuss necessary updates. A new 3-year academic calendar is recommended to the Chancellor and published online each year and any changes are presented to the University Registrar prior to submission to the Chancellor for approval. When considering future calendars, the committee relies on several sources, including but not limited to: feedback from the campus community, requests from student government, and annual reading days surveys.

Materials within the collection reflect the changing research concerns of the university. Issues confronted by the Research Committee range from policy creation and funding problems to the creation of web pages, depending on the various time periods. The University Research Committee's records range in date from 1943 to 2004. The North Carolina State University (previously College) Research Committee provides oversight in the administration of research proposals and funding resources for members of the faculty. While committee responsibilities have changed and evolved throughout the years, the management of proposal development (including budget development and agency guidelines) have maintained. The Research Committee has been concerned with the review and development of institutional policy for research, with assistance in obtaining financial support for research and research facilities. The records are comprised of minutes and meeting notes regarding residence life, housing, funding for cultural and educational programs, tutoring programs, studying abroad programs and scholarships. The North Carolina State University Residence Life Committee was established in 1972. The first meeting was held October 19, 1972, at 8:00 p.m. in the Bowen Hall Lounge. The committee members consisted of students, faculty and the University's Director of Residence Life. The Committee was appointed by Chancellor John T. Caldwell. The Office of Residence Life has the responsibility for programming, staff selection, staff supervision, and staff training in the residence halls. The purpose of the University Residence Life Committee is to advise the Office of Residence Life by: (1) evaluating present policies and programs, (2) reviewing changes in policies and programs as recommended by Residence Life staff members, Inter-Residence Council and other members of the university community: and (3) proposing new directions for the Office of Residence Life.

It contains the records of the North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also known as the Committee on Safety and Health), including: meeting minutes, monthly reports, records of calls to the Safety Hotline, and information on radiation and laboratory safety. The North Carolina State University Safety Committee (also referred to as the Committee on Health and Safety) appears to have existed as early as 1961. The purpose of the committee was to ensure that adequate safety measures were utilized at North Carolina State University, particularly fire safety, radiation safety, and lab safety. Though all safety concerns were relevant to the committee, these receive particular attention in the files. Safety measures and education at North Carolina State University are now handled by the North Carolina State University Environmental Health and Safety Center. Currently, the center manages the Safety Hotline, publishes the AWARE newsletter, and manages health and safety concerns from general health concerns, to information regarding radiation safety and environmental affairs. Recent information regarding the Safety Center's undertakings and the records of the Safety Hotline are available online.

This initiative began in 1973, with the aim of providing North Carolina State University with strategies to deal with the separation of faculty.

There is an additional folder of undated material in the collection. The collection primarily contains the minutes of the Social Functions Committee, as well as forms and information regarding chaperones, rental of locations and supplies, policies regarding social functions associated with the University, and correspondence related to said functions. Information relating to the Interfraternity Council and various fraternal and social organizations on campus can be found in this collection. A significant focus lies in expectations for student conduct and alcohol use at campus-related events. Though the included information spans from 1925 to 1971, there are few documents pertaining to the years 1925 to 1947. A Social Functions committee apparently existed at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1924-1925. The purpose of the Social Functions Committee was to establish codes of conduct for and organize social functions affiliated with the University and hosted by various student organizations. Social functions are currently submitted for approval through North Carolina State University's Public Events Calendar webpage.
