The John Ptak Computer Science Book Collection contains pamphlets, reports, journal articles, correspondence, software and hardware documentation, and other written material as well as more than 500 monographs and serials which are individually cataloged. The individually cataloged items are identified in the NC State University Libraries catalog as part of the John Ptak Computer Science Book Collection; they are not included in this description. The collection dates range from 1891 to 1987, but the bullk of the material is from 1940-1965. Notable authors and organizations represented include Carlo Arcelli, the Association for Computing Machines (ACM), Yehoshua Bar-Hillel, Robert J. Baron, Gordon Becker, Harry Blum, Curtiss-Wright Corporation, Walter M. Elsasser, George E. Forsythe, General Electric, J. K. Hawkins, Hewlett-Packard, Alston S. Householder, International Business Machines (IBM), William Karush, Felix Klein, Clifford J. Maloney, Jacob Marschak, Franco Modigliani, Frederick Mosteller, Ulric Neisser, W. V. Parker, Hans Reissner, Remington Rand, Inc., and Heinz Von Foerster. Topics covered include aeronautics, artificial intelligence, biology, biometrics, communications, computer science, electrical engineering, immunology, information retrieval, linguistics, logic, machine translation, mathematics, statistics, and technocracy. The majority of the material is written in English, though German, French, and Russian are also represented. John Ptak was the proprietor of J. F. The John Ralph Lambert, Jr., papers consist of a checklist of the daylily hybrids Lambert registered and introduced, a copy of a The Hemerocallis Journal, and a schedule for the American Hemerocallis Society's 30th National Convention. John R. Lambert, Jr. (1916 - 1994), was a hybrid specialist in daylilies. He was a social studies professor at North Carolina State University from 1952 to 1970, when he became a professor of University Studies. He received an undergraduate degree from Western Maryland College and a Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. Less

The John Ray Eaton papers contain personal correspondence, photographs of the farm at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, a copy of Massey's Garden Book for the Southern States, and a farming log book. The John Campbell Papers document the life and research of John S. Campbell, a British native who devoted his life's work to tropical agriculture and tobacco. The collection features his research, experiments, and writings about tropical agriculture done in the early part of his career, as well as later work conducted as a tobacco executive in North Carolina. Campbell also taught agriculture courses at North Carolina State University. The collection contains a large number of reprints and articles in the areas of tropical agriculture and tobacco. Less

Also the Physics academic software and user manuals, Physics educational software, correspondence and information about L.H. Thomas Lecture Series and documents related to Derieux lectureship endowment and lecture series. Professor John S. Risley (born 1942) conducted research on the utilization and effectiveness of computer technology to teach physics. Physics education research showed that interactive, hands-on collaborative student environments produce signific ant student learning. Computers enhance this approach. The primary thrusts in this effort included evaluating educational software programs, deciding which tools to use, structuring substantive student activities, implementing student/teacher tasks and evaluating the impact. These activities were then carried out in the new SCALE-UP classroom at NC State University. External efforts included publishing peer-reviews physics educational software, as editor of Physics Academic Software in cooperation with the American Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers. In addition, his group was involved with disseminating in formation about new materials in the physics journals, conducting teacher workshops, and collaborating at professional meetings. Professor Risley was the director of WebAssign, an online homework, quizzing, and testing assessment system that delivers, collects, and grades and records student's assignments. This wide-reaching facility incorporated textbook problems, many different answer types and classroom management tools. It represented a new way of accessing student performance and helps student learn basic physics concepts. Professor Risley passed away in Raleigh on 5 April 2013. Less

The John Sydney Barker papers, 1934-1951, contain Barker’s notebooks, reports, and examinations from several of his forestry classes at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University). Classes include ecology, forestry management, logging, and silviculture. Also included are student rosters, a 1939 commencement program, and correspondence from the Society of American Foresters. This collection is comprised of blueprints from May 1961 of the Charles Jeffrey Residence located on 4901 Rembert Drive in Raleigh, North Carolina. The architect was John T. Caldwell, and the home is located in the Brookhaven Development Lots. John T. Caldwell, AIA, was an architect who practiced in the Raleigh, North Carolina, area. Caldwell received degrees in architecture from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1953 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954. This collection contains work plans, study plans, office reports, and establishment reports from various MeadWestvaco research centers, laboratories, and offices. The materials are dated from 1960 to 2005. These research reports were created by the MeadWestvaco corporation (and its predecessors) and collected by John Thurmes, a former employee. This letter, dated December 14, 1883, and sent from John T. Patrick in Wadesboro, North Carolina, to Mrs. A. L. Coble in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, relates details about Patrick's trip to exhibitions in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and Boston, Massachusetts, where he had been promoting North Carolina and encouraging immigration. The letter also reveals Patrick's plan to sell land in North Carolina to northern farmers. Both the original letter and a typed transcription are included. John Tyrant Patrick (1852-1918) was a journalist and resort developer from Wadesboro, North Carolina. Patrick attracted northerners to North Carolina by advertising inexpensive, fertile land in northern newspapers. In 1883, North Carolina Governor Thomas J. Jarvis appointed Patrick as the head of the Department of Immigration. During his tenure, he established the resort towns of Southern Pines and Pinebluff, North Carolina. He also assisted in the in establishing the North Carolina towns of Pinehurst, Roseland, Peachland, Vaughn, and Southmont. Less

Collection includes a print titled John Wesley Powell on the Colorado, signed by Rudolph Wendelin. This print dates to 1969, commemorating the 100th anniversary of geologist John Wesley Powell's exploration of the west. Wendelin also designed a commemorative stamp of this event (not contained in the collection). Rudolph "Rudy" Wendelin was best known for his illustrations of Smokey the Bear. He attended the University of Kansas School of Architecture and became a draftsman for the United States Forest Service in 1933. During his tenure, he designed a new iteration of Smokey the Bear as well as six different commemorative stamps, including those of John Muir and John Wesley Powell (https://foresthistory.org/research-explore/archives-library/fhs-archival-collections/inventory-rudolph-wendelin-papers-1930-2005/, accessed October 2021). The John William Harrelson Papers contain correspondence, speeches and writings, reports, minutes, clippings, certificates, scrapbooks, financial records, and photographs. The collection provides information about Harrelson's military career, 1917-1919; his tenure as a faculty member and administrator at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1919-1929 and 1933-1953; and his service as director of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, 1929-1933. The materials also relate to Harrelson's membership in various civic and professional organizations. Materials range in date from 1908 to 1955. The John William Shirley papers consist of a 1948 letter from Shirley to Dr. J. H. Lampe, a daily log from Shirley's Soviet Field Seminar of the Comparative Education Society (1958), and the publication, "Soviet Education and Its Challenge" (1959). John William Shirley (1908 - 1988) served as an English professor and dean of the Division of Basic Studies at North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University) from 1949 to 1955, and Dean of Faculty from 1955 to 1962. Shirley left N.C. State in 1962 to become Vice President and Provost of the University of Delaware. He received his A.B. degree from the State University of Iowa in 1932 and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1937. He also took graduate classes, 1932-1933, at the University of Nebraska. Less

The collection is comprised of project files and blueprints for the Jolly-Broughton House. Some of the blueprints are marked foreman's copy. Additionally, some of the blueprints have the notation, "Revised June 29 1929." The Jolly-Broughton House, located on 929 Holt Drive in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a two-story brick Georgian Revival home. Charles Atwood and Arthur C. Nash are listed on the blueprints as the Architects & Engineers, but Nash was specifically involved with the project. Howard E. Satterfield was also involved with the project (in all likelihood) but his name is not listed on the blueprints. The home was originally built for Janie R. Jolly of Jolly's Jewelers in 1928-1929. J. Melville Broughton, Jr., resided here before and after his term as Governor of North Carolina (1941-1945). The home is included in the Hayes Barton Historic District in Wake County, North Carolina. The Jon Doyle papers contain letters and correspondence, published academic articles, drafts of these articles, books, journals, magazines, lectures, autobiographical writing, and other materials related to Jon Doyle's career as an computer scientist and academic, beginning with his undergraduate work at the University of Houston in the 1970s and continuing to the present. Jon Doyle is an emeritus faculty member in the NC State University Department of Computer Science who specializes in the study of Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Agents. His research is especially concerned with self-government and logics of belief, and integrates elements of philosophy, physics, economics, psychology, and computability, with reflections on other disciplines. During his career, Doyle has been affiliated with the University of Houston, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and North Carolina State University. Less

The Joseph Alfred Miller Papers contain items from Miller's student days (1900-1904) at the college that eventually became NC State University. Included are the jacket and caps of his cadet uniform; photographs showing student life, athletics, and campus buildings; student publications; and one of his engineering textbooks. A few of the photos show Miller's future wife Ella Duckett and his college roommate William Joel Patton. Some of the student publications and the textbook contain his marginalia (the textbook contains a note about Professor Carl Riddick). The collection also contains some college publications from the 1930s when other Miller family members attended NC State, and this includes athletics programs. Joseph Alfred Miller (1883-1949) of Brevard, North Carolina, graduated from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (abbreviated A & M and later renamed North Carolina State University) in 1904.
