The James William Clark Papers consist of correspondence and publications by Clark. The papers also contain brochures and pamphlets relating to the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, including the inductions of Guy Owen and Richard Walser. Materials range in date from 1985 to 2020. James W. Clark, Jr. (1943- ), was the director of Humanities Extension at North Carolina State University beginning in 1993 and taught in the English Department beginning in 1967. Clark received his bachelor's degree in English from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (1965), and his master's degree (1967) and Ph. D. (1970) in English from Duke University. He has authored numerous publications, including Clover All Over. He has been involved in various professional associations, including the Thomas Wolfe Society. He was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2017 and won the 2020 John Tyler Caldwell Award for the Humanities — the North Carolina Humanities Council’s most prestigious honor. Less

The collection contains the business and design records from James M. Webb's architectural firm, as well as his personal papers and some papers of his brother, John B. Webb, and his mother, Martha Webb. The major groupings of records are Project Files, Drawings, Maps, Professional Papers, Personal Papers, Photographs and Slides, Videos, Artifacts, John B. Webb, and Martha Webb. James Murray Webb was born in 1908 and died in 2000. In 1947, he joined the new City and Regional Planning School at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill, where he served as a faculty member for thirty years. He and his brother, John Bruce Webb, maintained an architectural practice in Chapel Hill and designed a number of modernist houses and other buildings in the area. Less

The James Wyche Green Papers contain correspondence, research, reports, teaching materials, and other information relating to Green's five years of teaching in the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College. Included in the collection are research materials about farm life and population, two of Green's interests. Of special note in this collection are handwritten and typed student papers and book reports, as well as student autobiographies from 1949. James Wyche Green, born in 1915, taught classes in the Department of Rural Sociology at North Carolina State College from 1949 to 1954. He later worked for the United States Department of Agriculture and served as a consultant on agricultural development for the State Department. Green became a psychotherapist with interests in meditation in the 1970s, and published the book Integrative Meditation in 1994. Less

This collection consists of personal writings, correspondence, biographical accounts, news clippings, and scripts from radio show broadcasts. They cover topics of food preparation and home demonstration marketing and development. Papers on McKimmon's awards, retirement, and death are also included. Jane Simpson McKimmon was born November 13, 1867 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated from the Peace Institute at 16 years old, and spent her time leading home demonstrations and serving as the State Director of the women's divsion of the Farmers Institute. Her outstanding work in educating women in home demonstration techniques eventually lead to her appointment as the State Home Demonstration Agent in 1911. In conjunction with her work, she strongly believed in continuing her education and soon earned B.S. (1926) and M.S. (1929) degrees from North Carolina State University. After her retirement in 1937, McKimmon continued to serve as the Assistant Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. Her great contributions to home demonstration programs garnered her many awards and also an honorary doctor of law degree from the University of North Carolina. Less

It features audio files, digital files for a comprehensive website, short films, and the full official transcript of MLK’s first ever “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered in Rocky Mount, NC nine months before the March on Washington. The Jasper Leonidas Stuckey Papers contain publications, personal and professional correspondence, research notes, newspaper clippings, maps, and a rock sample. There are several publications in the field of geology, and research in the area of salt deposits in North Carolina. The personal materials document Stuckey's interest in farming and include items generated by both Stuckey and the United States Department of Agriculture during World War II which illustrate the problems, goals, and difficulties of farm management and food production during the war. The professional records contain correspondence, reprints, information on salt research, correspondence concerning Stuckey's term as State Geologist of North Carolina, and a paper by Dr. W. J. McCoughey on thermochemical mineralogy (1935). The published papers contain maps and papers. Jasper L. Stuckey was a geologist, educator, farmer, and consultant. He was born in Princeton, North Carolina, on 24 July 1891 and graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1918 and earned an M.A. in Geology in 1920. He served briefly in the United States Army in France, seeing combat in the Argonne Forest. Stukey received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1924 and became the State Geologist of North Carolina, serving 1925-1926 and 1940-1965. He became professor of Geology at North Carolina State College in 1926 and served as head of the Department of Geology from 1927 until 1957. Less

The Jean Anderson Cookbooks collection contains cookbooks written or co-written by Jean Anderson from 1965-2019. The cookbooks include recipes for a variety of foods including desserts and Southern dishes. There is one non-cookbook included in this collection and it is a history book about Prince Henry the Navigator. Jean Anderson was a well-known journalist, food writer, and cookbook author (1929-2023). She was born in 1929 in Chapel Hill, NC. She wrote and co-wrote several cookbooks throughout her lifetime. She studied Food Chemistry and Nutrition at Cornell University and then got her Master's in Journalism from Columbia University. She was a food editor for newspapers and magazines, including Family Circle and Food and Wine. She authored thirteen cookbooks and co-wrote seventeen. She was also a four time winner of of the Tastemaker and International Association of Cooking Professionals awards. Less

This collection documents Jehu Dewitt Paulson's career as an artist and educator and contains drawings, paintings, prints, plates, photographs and illustrations for published and unpublished manuscripts. The Personal files include Paulson's application for a Guggenheim Fellowship (1934), photographs of Paulson and his family, certificates of memberships to various societies and fraternities, a curriculum vitae, and notes from his college years. The North Carolina State College series includes class notes, a partial history of the Department of Architecture, course materials and notes on the appreciation of paintings. The Building Images subseries contains photographs, pencil sketches and plates of various campus buildings, including Memorial Tower, Primrose Hall, and Pullen Hall. Files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.) comprise another series. The Writings, Research and Inventions series contains identifications of paintings (by painter and subject), correspondence regarding the identification process, and published writings, including The Exterior Form of the Solitary Atom (1952), and unpublished manuscripts ("Appreciation of Painting," "Escape from Atlantis," and "People Makers, a Fantasy of Evolution"). Among the inventions are plans for an elevated storage tower and for an improved internal combustion rotary motor. Also included in this series are subject files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.). The Paintings, Sketches, Drawings, and Designs series comprise a good representation of Paulson's original artwork. This series also contains drawings and related papers on The Forms of the Elementary Atoms and The Periodic Law. The Photographic series contains undated photos of various atoms and elements. The Family Papers series contains a printed book on family history. The Jerome Kohl Papers contains paper records, photographs, and video tapes from 1942 to 1995 that detail Kohl's long career in the evolving fields of nuclear energy and technology transfer. Reference and lecture materials show the intellectual milieu in which Kohl was immersed. His publications demonstrate the way he synthesized that information and his own research into the kinds of ideas that engineering and science education journals found publishable. Documents relating to the contracts and consultancy work he undertook reflect both his and the nuclear industry's research interests, as well as the manner in which a scientist went about obtaining money and support from the 1950s to the early 1990s. The collection also sheds light on the peacetime uses of nuclear power in general, as well as the people and state and federal agencies involved in its forward movement and regulation. In addition, it shows the development of North Carolina State University's Nuclear Engineering department and its extension program. Other items of interest include the large group of photographs and other materials from Tracerlab from the early 1950s through the 1960s; and an assortment of material on the Sierra Club on both the national and local levels, especially relating to its positions on energy policy. The Jerome Robert Cerny architectural drawings for Truman and Annie Williams (1935-1938) contains twenty-four blueprints documenting the original architecture and landscape of the Williams residence, 910 Harvey Street, Raleigh, North Carolina. The drawings were created by architect Jerome Robert Cerny of Lake Forest, Illinois and Charles F. Gillette, a Raleigh-based landscape architect. Truman and Annie Williams commissioned the construction of this home in 1939. Mrs. Williams saw photographs in a magazine of a residence in Lake Forest, Illinois, created by Jerome Robert Cerny. The Williamses then commissioned Cerny to create a similar residence for them in Raleigh, North Carolina. Charles F. Gillette was the landscape architect on the project and several of his drawings, specifically created for the Williams residence, are included in this collection. Less

Jerry Turner, FASLA, AICP, graduated from the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design in 1959 with a B. A. in Landscape Architecture. He worked as a planner for the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, Division of Community Planning, for a period of time. In 1967, Turner founded Jerry Turner and Associates, a landscape architecture firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Jerry Turner Landscape Architecture Papers contains a selection of key projects handled by the firm Jerry Turner and Associates in North Carolina, as well as a few additional items, such as awards and honors given to Jerry Turner during his career. The Jesse P. Spoon Letters are ten letters documenting Spoon's life as a student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University). The letters are addressed to Robert A. Coble of Oakdale, North Carolina, who was Spoon's classmate at what Spoon calls "Oakdale School." This may refer to Oakdale Academy, which was a preparatory school in Alamance County. Spoon discusses military training, classes, and social receptions at the college, as well as other notable events like measles outbreaks. There is also some discussion of events in Oakdale, a community in the Patterson Township of Alamance County, North Carolina. The first seven letters were written from January to April 1903, with the following three being from March and May of 1904. Jesse Page Spoon was born on 20 January 1883 in Alamance County, North Carolina. He may have attended preparatory school at Oakdale Academy. In 1902 or 1903, he began attending North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University), where he earned a Bachelors of Agriculture in May 1908 and a Master of Science in 1909. In 1909 he worked at the college as a laboratory assistant in anatomy and physiology. He next attended the Kansas City Veterinary College in Kansas City, Missouri, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Surgery degree in 1911. He practiced veterinary medicine in Burlington, North Carolina, where he worked with Dr. W.A. Hornaday and served on the Burlington School Board and as Secretary of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. He married Mable Clare Lea on 30 December 1915. They had two children, Margaret Jane Spoon and Mildred Lea Spoon. Jesse Page Spoon died on 29 October 1931 in Burlington, North Carolina. Less

The Jim Davis Photographs contain photographs, slides, and negatives of the NC State University campus, student life and activities, athletics, and Chancellor John Caldwell, among other topics. Selected images were used in the Agromeck yearbooks of 1972, 1973, and 1974. Most items were photographed by Jim Davis (editor of the 1975 Agromeck), but some were taken by Michael O'Brien and Jim Holcombe, also on the Agromeck staff. Less

The Jim E. Riviere papers contain research notebooks from experiments with the IPPSF (isolated perfused porcine skin flap), a novel in vitro alternative animal model for studies in cutaneous toxicology, dermatology, physiology, oncology, percutaneous drug absorption, and metabolism. Included as well are research notes from different projects and experiments involving pharmacology and toxicology, grant reports and study reports pertaining to Riviere's work with pharmacology and toxicology for North Carolina State University, the United States Department of Defense, the United States Army Medical Research Acquisition Agency, and several private corporations. The collection also contains copies of published articles, conference programs and computer-printed drafts of textbooks and textbook chapters written and co-written by Jim E. Riviere and his wife and co-researcher, Nancy A. Monteiro-Riviere, Lab Notebooks for IPPSF Department of Defense (including Laminin), and other Studies. As of January 2007, Jim E. Riviere was Burroughs Wellcome Fund Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology; Director, Center for Chemical Toxicology Research and Pharmacokinetics, College of Veterinary Medicine; and Director of the Biomathematics Program of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. His research interests relate to applying biomathematics to problems in toxicology, including the risk assessment of chemical mixtures, pharmacokinetics, absorption of drugs and chemicals across skin, and the food safety and pharmacokinetics of tissue residues in food producing animals. The Joab L. Thomas Papers include a copy of A Resolution of Commendation for Chancellor Joab L. Thomas, passed unanimously by the Student Senate (1981 April 15). There is also a transcription from a tape of Thomas' remarks to deans, directors, and department heads at the time of his resignation as chancellor and the announcement of his appointment as president of the University of Alabama (1981 March 25). The collection also includes items from Thomas's earlier career at the University of Alabama, particularly letters of congratulation upon his appointment as Vice President of Student Affairs in 1974. Joab Langston Thomas was the chancellor of North Carolina State University from 1976 to 1981, president of the University of Alabama from 1981 to 1988, professor at the University of Alabama from 1961 to 1975, and vice president for Student Affairs at the University of Alabama from 1974 to 1975. Thomas received his A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in botany from Harvard University. He passed away on March 3, 2014 at the age of 81. Less

The Joe Cox Papers contain correspondence, photographs, newspaper and other materials documenting the life of Joe Cox, an artist and professor for the North Carolina State University School of Design. The collection also includes slides of his artistic works, sketches spanning his entire creative lifetime, and some materials relating to his service in the United States Air Force during the second World War. Joseph H. Cox (1915-1997) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and studied art at the John Herron Art School and the University of Iowa. Cox began exhibiting early in his career with entries in the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition in San Francisco and the 1941 Carnegie International exhibition. He also created murals in two United States Post Offices, and received funding through the New Deal. He taught art at universities in Iowa, Florida, and Tennessee, but most of his career was spent at North Carolina State University. He became one of North Carolina’s leading artists and art educators. In the 1950s, Joe and Betsy Cox discovered the town of Oriental, North Carolina, and a passion for sailing. He was one of the founding members of the Neuse Sailing Association, named after the Neuse River which Oriental, North Carolina, sits on the banks of. Paintings and murals by Joe Cox are found in the collections of numerous museums and corporate offices throughout the United States. His images are primarily urban landscapes, and he worked in oils, watercolors and acrylics. Less

The Joe Ermalovich report and advertisement consist of a brief 1940 lab report entitled Determination of Power and Coefficient of Friction. Ermalovich conducted the experiment to prove that force of friction is proportional to the normal force. It contains the original cover sheet and experiment data sheet, as well as a photocopy of one page of the report. A 1941 advertising poster for Carolina Coach Company, featuring Ermalovich as the campus representative, is also included. A West Virginia native, Ermalovich attended North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in the early 1940s. The Joellen Secondo Collection of Animal Protection Materials contain publications and a dog collar dating from 1896 through 1917. More specifically, these publications include five issues of “Our Dumb Animals,” a monthly periodical published by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The collection encompasses the 1904 January issue of “The Ladies’ World” magazine with an article entitled “Pets for Women.” Also included is a dog collar with metal plaques reading: J. W. to K. G and Czar Nicholas/Kitty Gordon/145 Falmouth St/Manhattan Beach (Kitty Gordon was an actor in the early 20th century. In 1916, she acquired a Russian wolfhound named Czar Nicholas). Finally, the collection contains “Exercises for Schools in Massachusetts,” a pamphlet published by the American Humane Education Society in 1917. Joellen Secondo has served as a Companion Animals and Engagement Specialist at Humane Society International. Humane Society International (HIS) was created in 1991 as an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and since then pursues animal rights and welfare work globally. It implements programs in Asia, Africa, and Americas. More specifically, the HIS operates to foster the human-animal bond, protect wildlife, rescue cats and dogs, and promote animal-free testing and research, and fight cruelty against animals. Less
