Photographs, speeches, correspondence, awards and other items chiefly documenting William C. Friday's activities at or related to North Carolina State University, including his year as senior class president and honors as alumnus of the University's College of Textiles. Included in the collection are Friday's United States Navy uniform and his academic garb. William C. Friday served as president of the University of North Carolina System, 1956-1986. Friday served as chairman of numerous national panels including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the American Council on Education, President Johnson’s Task Force on Education, President Carter’s Task Force on Education, the American Council on Education and the Knight Foundation National Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. Friday graduated from North Carolina State College in 1941 with a degree in textile engineering. At State College, he was sports editor of the student newspaper and president of the senior class. The William Ivey Long Honorary Materials consist of one folder of materials, dating from 2007 to 2011, that relate to William Ivey Long's achievements,. They include a program and invitation for the 14th Annual Design Guild Award Dinner at which Long was the award recipient; materials from the Cameron Art Museum's exhibit of Long's costume designs and sketches; a copy of Our State Magazine; and a News and Observer newspaper article covering a fire in Manteo, North Carolina, that destroyed the costume shop for The Lost Colony drama. Contained in this collection are packaging for ladies hosiery, and in most cases, these still contain the actual products. Most of the products were manufactured in North Carolina, and they were collected by William J. Leath. A variety of brands are represented in the collection, including Corbett, McCrary, L'eggs, Bear, Bic, and even a few international brands. These materials were displayed at the Acme-McCrary headquarters in Asheboro, N.C., prior to their donation to the NC State University Libraries. William J. Leath (1914-2003) worked in the hosiery industry in North Carolina, beginning in 1936 with Chadbourn Hosiery Mills, Inc. (earlier Rufus D. Wilson Company), and in 1958 helping found Leath, McCarthy and Maynard (LM&M). While working for Chadbourn, Leath invented stretch hosiery used in ladies nylons and pantyhose. Patents were issued for Leath's new yarn, product, and manufacturing process from 1955 to 1957. Less

This collection contains an oral history interview with William L. Flournoy, Jr. that was conducted by Gwynn Thayer in 2017. Included is a full transcription of the interview. William L. Flournoy Jr., Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, is one of the first individuals to propose a greenway system plan. Flournoy is a graduate of North Carolina State University (B.S., Recreation and Parks Administration, 1966-1969; Master of Landscape Architecture, 1969-1972) and worked for the Wake County Planning Department and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Flournoy has worked in public services for more than three decades, working to improve the park system, bicycle transportation, and environmental causes. Less

The William L. Flournoy Jr. Papers, 1968-2019, document William Flournoy's career of advocating for greenways, open space conservation, and environmental causes in North Carolina. The records include information on his involvement with the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC), Triangle Greenways Council (TGC), People for Parks (PFP), other environmental nonprofits, and North Carolina Department of Parks and Recreation, as well as other state and city government departments. The Wim Dekok Animal Rights Collection consists of publications, leaflets, clippings, articles, correspondence, archived web content, and photographs from national and international animal rights organizations. These materials, mostly compiled by Wim DeKok, originated in many countries, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Australia. Consequently, they are published in a variety of languages, most notably English, German, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Topics include animal cruelty, vivisection, the meat industry, strays and pet keeping, whaling, fur, and bullfighting. The collection includes correspondence from Professor Sjoerd Hofstra (1898-1983) of the Netherlands, former Chairman (1961-1973) of the World Federation for the Protection of Animals. Wim DeKok is the Co-Founder and Executive board member of the World Federation for Animals, board member of the Species Survival Network and the European Alliance for Rescue Centres and Sanctuaries and Advisory board member of ACT Asia for Animals. While working in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States, he has been active in and collected papers and documents on animal welfare and the animal rights movement for over 40 years. The Yates Mill Associates Records contain correspondence, board of director and executive committee files, newsletters, brochures, architectural drawings, photographs, slides, videos, one cassette tape, and other items related to the Yates Mill Associates Records. Materials range in date from approximately 1946 to 2016. Yates Mill Associates, Inc. was formed in 1989. Its mission was to restore, preserve, and operate the mill. Yates Mill Associates developed partnerships with Wake County and North Carolina State University, the mill owner and guardian, to develop a park around this significant relic. Today, this community resource also includes the A. E. Finley Center for Education and Research, and a 174-acre nature preserve. Less
