This collection documents Jehu Dewitt Paulson's career as an artist and educator and contains drawings, paintings, prints, plates, photographs and illustrations for published and unpublished manuscripts. The Personal files include Paulson's application for a Guggenheim Fellowship (1934), photographs of Paulson and his family, certificates of memberships to various societies and fraternities, a curriculum vitae, and notes from his college years. The North Carolina State College series includes class notes, a partial history of the Department of Architecture, course materials and notes on the appreciation of paintings. The Building Images subseries contains photographs, pencil sketches and plates of various campus buildings, including Memorial Tower, Primrose Hall, and Pullen Hall. Files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.) comprise another series. The Writings, Research and Inventions series contains identifications of paintings (by painter and subject), correspondence regarding the identification process, and published writings, including The Exterior Form of the Solitary Atom (1952), and unpublished manuscripts ("Appreciation of Painting," "Escape from Atlantis," and "People Makers, a Fantasy of Evolution"). Among the inventions are plans for an elevated storage tower and for an improved internal combustion rotary motor. Also included in this series are subject files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.). The Paintings, Sketches, Drawings, and Designs series comprise a good representation of Paulson's original artwork. This series also contains drawings and related papers on The Forms of the Elementary Atoms and The Periodic Law. The Photographic series contains undated photos of various atoms and elements. The Family Papers series contains a printed book on family history. The John D. Mattox Papers contain photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and papers depicting the personal and professional life of John D. Mattox. Personal portraits and snapshots document the lives of Mattox, his wife Mary, their son Douglas, and their extended family. Also included are photographs of the town of Wendell, North Carolina, where the Mattox family lived. The collection also includes photographs taken while Mattox served in Europe during World War II. Relating to Mattox’s professional career as a photographer at North Carolina State University, there are many images of campus scenes, student and faculty portraits, and campus publications featuring Mattox’s work. Wedding photographs, miscellaneous portraits, unidentified original and copied tintypes and cartes de visite, as well as rolled 35 mm negatives are also included. While the majority of the collection is composed of photographs, there are some papers such as news clippings, correspondence, business cards, awards, brochures, and grade reports which belonged to Mattox. John Douglas Mattox, Sr. (1911-1987) was a photographer with the Visual Aids Department at North Carolina State University from 1949 to 1974. A native of Wendell, North Carolina, Mattox attended North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the 1930s and enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving in Europe. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, and had a son John Douglas Mattox, Jr., called Doug. The John Fletcher Miller Papers contains materials related to Miller's involvement with athletics, intramural sports, and the Department of Physical Education at North Carolina State University. The collection contains a biographical essay, a certificate, correspondence, news and yearbook clippings, and photographs. The items date from 1924 to 1972. John Fletcher Miller was an athlete who played one season with the Saint Louis Browns (1912). He served as a coach at the University of Missouri, 1916-1921, and Albion College in Michigan, 1921-1924, before becoming the Head of the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at North Carolina State College in 1924. He served as the head of the Physical Education Department and the Director of Intramural Sports from 1924 to 1956. He was also the University's Director of Athletics and the President of the North Carolina Physical Education Association. The Miller Fields on the N.C. State campus are named for him. Less

The items in this collection were assembled by John Ptak and relate to animal protection issues in the United States. John Ptak was the proprietor of J. F. Ptak Books, Maps, and Prints in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. The store specialized in used, rare, and antiquarian manuscripts, reprints, journals, maps, and prints in mathematics and the sciences. The John Ptak Computer Science Book Collection contains pamphlets, reports, journal articles, correspondence, software and hardware documentation, and other written material as well as more than 500 monographs and serials which are individually cataloged. The individually cataloged items are identified in the NC State University Libraries catalog as part of the John Ptak Computer Science Book Collection; they are not included in this description. The collection dates range from 1891 to 1987, but the bullk of the material is from 1940-1965. Notable authors and organizations represented include Carlo Arcelli, the Association for Computing Machines (ACM), Yehoshua Bar-Hillel, Robert J. Baron, Gordon Becker, Harry Blum, Curtiss-Wright Corporation, Walter M. Elsasser, George E. Forsythe, General Electric, J. K. Hawkins, Hewlett-Packard, Alston S. The collection consists of notebooks and textbooks of Morrison's when he was a student in the North Carolina State College School of Textiles, 1921-1924. All three notebooks are entirely handwritten, approximately 30 pages each, covering textiles design and manufacturing, and carding and spinning topics. The John William Harrelson Papers contain correspondence, speeches and writings, reports, minutes, clippings, certificates, scrapbooks, financial records, and photographs. The collection provides information about Harrelson's military career, 1917-1919; his tenure as a faculty member and administrator at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), 1919-1929 and 1933-1953; and his service as director of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, 1929-1933. The collection is comprised of project files and blueprints for the Jolly-Broughton House. Some of the blueprints are marked foreman's copy. Additionally, some of the blueprints have the notation, "Revised June 29 1929." The Jolly-Broughton House, located on 929 Holt Drive in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a two-story brick Georgian Revival home. Charles Atwood and Arthur C. Nash are listed on the blueprints as the Architects & Engineers, but Nash was specifically involved with the project. Howard E. Satterfield was also involved with the project (in all likelihood) but his name is not listed on the blueprints. The home was originally built for Janie R. Jolly of Jolly's Jewelers in 1928-1929. J. Melville Broughton, Jr., resided here before and after his term as Governor of North Carolina (1941-1945). The home is included in the Hayes Barton Historic District in Wake County, North Carolina. The Joseph Alfred Miller Papers contain items from Miller's student days (1900-1904) at the college that eventually became NC State University. Included are the jacket and caps of his cadet uniform; photographs showing student life, athletics, and campus buildings; student publications; and one of his engineering textbooks. A few of the photos show Miller's future wife Ella Duckett and his college roommate William Joel Patton. Some of the student publications and the textbook contain his marginalia (the textbook contains a note about Professor Carl Riddick). The collection also contains some college publications from the 1930s when other Miller family members attended NC State, and this includes athletics programs. Joseph Alfred Miller (1883-1949) of Brevard, North Carolina, graduated from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (abbreviated A & M and later renamed North Carolina State University) in 1904. The Josephine Scott Hudson Papers include research papers, correspondence, journals, photographs, postcards, news clippings, and ephemera. The bulk of the material contained in this collection relates to Cassius Rex Hudson's career with the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service and to the career of W. Kerr Scott, former governor of North Carolina. There is also material relating to Hudson's nephew, former North Carolina Governor Robert W. Scott. Daughter of Robert W. Scott of Alamance County, North Carolina, and sister of W. Kerr Scott, governor of North Carolina (1949-1953) and United States Senator (1954-1958), Josephine Scott married Cassius Rex Hudson in 1911. Cassius Rex Hudson, a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute, was hired by Seaman Knapp in 1907 to serve as the Farmer's Cooperative Demonstration Work agent for the state of North Carolina. In 1922, he was placed in charge of "Negro Demonstration Work" for the state of North Carolina and worked as the director of that program until his death in 1940. Less

The Juanita Lagg Cooperative Extension Papers consists of records pertaining to North Carolina Extension Homemakers work from 1915 to 2014. The records include photographs, letters, notes, correspondences, newspaper articles, a scrapbook, and other records relating to Juanita Lagg's work with Home Demonstration and Extension organizations. Juanita Lagg actively volunteered with the Rowan County Extension and Community Association for over fifty years. She joined the Rowan County Home Demonstration in 1956 and served in leadership positions at the club, county, district, state, and national level. Lagg researched and directed the North Carolina Extension Homemakers water project in Guatamala that brought clean water to three villages. In 1981, she was appointed by the governor to the Rowan County Board of Social Services and served two three-year terms. Less
