Contained in this collection are Melvin's diploma (1913) and a certificate (1912) appointing him first lieutenant of the cadets. Also included is a handwritten note with biographical information about Melvin. It is undated but must be from a much later time period. Robert Tolar Melvin was from Bladen County. At 17 he taught in a one-room school. He was later a postal carrier. He attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and graduated in 1913 with the degree bachelor of science in agriculture. Less

News clippings, radio talks, articles, correspondence, field reports, and photographs relating to Robert Walter Graeber's thirty-two years spent in service of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension program. As head of the Forestry Extension, he influenced the founding of the North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) Forestry Department in 1929. Of major interest in this collection are Graeber's weekly field reports on several counties in North Carolina. These reports reflect Graeber's daily activities from 1926 to 1939. Other reports meticulously document plots of timber within several counties over the same period. Age, growth, volume, number, and price of standing trees represent the data gathered. R. W. (Robert Walter) Graeber was a pioneer of North Carolina’s forestry extension service and a leader of the North Carolina Forestry Association for several decades. A graduate of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (which later became North Carolina State University), Graeber was appointed farm forestry specialist (or state extension forester) in 1925, specializing in the thinning and management of timberlands. He served in this role until his retirement in 1950. As the state extension forester he led hundreds of forestry demonstrations across North Carolina for farmers and sawmill operators. Graeber instructed them in the harvesting, timber scaling, planting and marketing of trees and lumber products. For those that Graber could not teach in person, he wrote extension circulars and numerous newspaper articles that were circulated nationwide. Graeber also was instrumental in establishing the Department of Forestry at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1929. Less

The collection also includes a number of playbills from Broadway shows and information on Marshall's travels. Roger Powell Marshall (1899-1987) was an educator, author, and North Carolina historian. The Roscoe Braham Papers contain material documenting Braham's career, including correspondence (some handwritten), office files, research notes, grant proposals and reports, notes and related documentation from meetings and conferences, class notes, and personal records from 1863 to 2011 with some undated material. Also included are black and white photographs and negatives, newspaper articles, pamphlets, bound reports on research projects, glass slides, slides, film reels, annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) Council Meeting correspondence from the 1940s to 2000 and beyond, and articles and reference material dating back to 1863. The records provide insight into Braham's research on cloud precipitation physics, his engagement with other scientists, scholars, and institutions, like the University of Chicago and North Carolina State University, and his involvement with professional organizations. Roscoe R. Braham Jr. is a pioneering meteorologist, educator, expert in cloud precipitation physics, and visiting professor at North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in geology in 1942 from the Ohio University. Braham completed his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Chicago, joined the University of Chicago staff in 1952 as a research meteorologist and retired in 1991 after thirty-seven years, twenty-six of them as a full professor. Braham has published more than eighty scientific reports, books, and monographs during his academic career. Braham joined the American Meteorological Society in 1945 and served as its president in 1988. He is credited for the discovery of the cell organization of thunderstorms as well as the coalescence-freezing mechanism of precipitation formation in natural clouds. Less

The Roy Styring Dearstyne Papers contain materials related to Dearstyne's education, teaching career, and endeavors in the field of poultry science, as well as materials related to his death and the Dearstyne Avian Health Center. Roy Styring Dearstyne was a member of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) Poultry Science faculty from 1922 to 1955, serving as the head of the Poultry Science Department from 1930 until his retirement in 1955. He developed a testing procedure for controlling pullorum disease in poultry, wrote one of the first books in the nation about poultry diseases, and was instrumental in the development and expansion of the North Carolina poultry industry. N.C. State's Dearstyne Avian Health Center, built in 1968, was named for him. Less

The Rynn Berry Jr. Papers include record files, books, periodicals, articles taken from periodicals, booklets, pamphlets, leaflets, manuscripts, writing drafts, research notes, interview transcripts, facsimiles, drawings, photographs, correspondence, audio recordings, video recordings, and computer disks, relating to Rynn Berry's interests in vegetarianism, veganism, and animal rights. Rynn Berry, Jr. was an author, lecturer, and activist who dedicated his life to increasing public awareness on vegetarianism, veganism, animal rights, and the religious and ethical aspects of these topics. He was regarded as an expert on the history of vegetarianism, and he wrote many books, articles, book entries, in addition to giving lectures and participating in discussion panels. Less

The Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill Collection of Papers and Artifacts contains exhibit labels, a drawing, Articles of Agreement, and an iron spindle, all pertaining to the Schenck-Warlick Textile Mill, the first textile mill in North Carolina. Materials range in date from 1813 to 1871, with some documentation dating from 1991. The first textile mill in North Carolina was built before 1813 in Lincoln County, 1.5 miles east of Lincolnton. Michael Schenck built the mill and later partnered with Absolom Warlick to build a second in 1816. Through the 1820s and 1830s the profitable operation of the Schenck mills was a model to many more in North Carolina. The Schenck-Warlick Mill firmly established the Southern Textile industry. Less

Papers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004. Less

Shadrach Chaffin's journal documents agricultural life, business, events, and the weather in and near Vernon Township, Ohio, from the mid-1800s through the 1930s. The journal was used for varying purposes. Consequently, there is little discernible order in terms of pagination. As Chaffin wrote on page 133 of his journal, "When I am gone to return no more this book will be searched and read over be careful to read all, it will be some trouble, as dates run back as well as forward." Also included in the collection are a handwritten transcription of parts of the journal , a published genealogy of the Chaffin family in the United States, genealogical notes, and a clipping with a story of a Chaffin family in North Carolina. This collection contains a one-page biography of Sol Williams (Doc) Newton written by his son, mementos from Newton's induction into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, correspondence and photocopies of clippings and citations regarding Coach Newton's career in intercollegiate athletics, and several obituary notices. Newton (1893-1970) played professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles and coached college football and baseball at Davidson College before becoming head football coach at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1937 to 1944. This collection contains the professional papers of Stuart McGuire Noblin, including those related to his professorship at North Carolina State University, and on topics of his research, including farmers' movements, the National Grange, and the role of churches in constructive race relations. Also contained in this collection are Noblin's personal papers from his involvement in the North Carolina Chess Association. Stuart Noblin was a professor in the Departments of History and Political Science at North Carolina State University from 1947 to 1976. He also served as part-time University Archivist from 1957 to 1964, as well as chairman of the Committee on the History of the College, and was a member of the Faculty Senate from 1957 to 1961. Textile industry-produced marketing materials, reports, brochures, catalogs, etc., complete, in many cases, with textile samples documenting the effectiveness of particular dyestuffs on the various fabrics. Also included are a small number of government documents. The Institute of Textile Technology transferred its library to North Carolina State University's Burlington Textiles Library when it moved its operations to the NC State University Centennial Campus. The Burlington Textiles Library had maintained for years a vertical file for quick reference. After the merger of the two libraries, the Burlington Textiles Library transferred the historically valuable materials from both collections to the NC State University Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The Hosiery Association was founded in 1905 and was a global trade organization advocating for hosiery manufacturers. The collection includes industry directories (2002, 2004); annual hosiery statistics (1999); hosiery advertisements (1938); and the founding charter (1910) of the National Association of Hosiery & Underwear Manufacturers, which was later renamed The Hosiery Association. The Theodore B. Mitchell Papers consists of correspondence, research notes, glass plate lantern slides, and newspaper clippings pertaining to Theodore B. Mitchell's career and his research on "systematic entomology," and in particular his study of bees (which culminated in the publication of the two-volume Bees of the Eastern United States). The Professional Correspondence series contains letters to colleagues in the field of entomology and includes, among others, letters to and from the British Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the College of Tropical Agriculture. The Personal Correspondence series contains letters to friends and family members, as well as letters that document Mitchell's involvement with various civic organizations. Theodore B. Mitchell (1890-1983) was a North Carolina State College professor of entomology for over thirty-five years. During his career, he researched "systematic entomology" and had a special focus on bees. The Thomas Buie Morris Papers, 1914-1989, contains the book, Stories of a Country Boy, Morris's autobiography. Also included are newspaper clippings, publications by North Carolina State University and the extension service pertaining to poultry, correspondence relating to Poultry Science Extension, speeches, photographs, poultry calendars made by poultry extension specialists, publications from other states and the United States Department of Agriculture, newsletters, seminars, proceedings, and other items related to poultry and eggs. Thomas Buie Morris (1915-2001), called Tom, was a Poultry Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University (formerly North Carolina College of Agriculture and Engineering) from 1948 to 1975. He was the author of Poultry Can Crow at NC State University (1980). Morris graduated from the University of Georgia in 1940 and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served as Secretary and Treasurer of the North Carolina State Hatchery Association for seven years. Less

This collection contains material documenting the personal and professional life of Thomas Nelson, an internationally renowned textile expert and educator. Included are correspondence, photographs, textile samples, clippings from print media, class and lab notes, and Nelson's various published works. Of special interest in this collection is correspondence with then-Democratic presidential nominee Franklin Delano Roosevelt, correspondence with a North Carolina State alumnus serving in World War II, and a signed 4th edition of Nelson's book, Practical Loom Fixing. Thomas Nelson (1872-1953) worked as educator, administrator, and textile technologist. He served the Textiles Department at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1901 to 1949, originally as an instructor, then Head of the Textiles Department, and later as the first Dean of the School of Textiles. The collection consists of two notebooks of fabric analyses compiled by Thomas Roy Hart while a student at the Textiles School in 1912-1913 and one additional sheet of notes. Fabric and thread samples are included. Thomas Roy Hart (1890-1956) obtained bachelor's degrees in Engineering and Textiles Engineering from North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. He joined the faculty at North Carolina State College in 1919. He went on to become the Head of the Department of Weaving and Designing, and Director of Instruction. Less
