The Albert Harvey Grimshaw Papers contains a photocopy, a microfilm copy and the original letter of indenture of apprenticeship document for Amos James Grimshaw to James Mather Daltry, to learn the "Art, trade, and business of a reed maker and Heald Knitter." This document was registered in the county of Lancaster, England, on 1867 May 11. There is also a typewritten copy of the "Grimshaw Newsletter," 1944. This newsletter covers events in the lives of Grimshaw's classmates at North Carolina State University. Rhode Island native Albert Harvey Grimshaw (1883-1949) received his education from the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, North Carolina State College, and the New Bedford Textile School. He was a pharmacist and wrestling coach before becoming an instructor in chemistry and dyeing at the New Bedford Textile School in 1917. In 1925 Grimshaw left New Bedford for North Carolina State College, where he served as professor of Textile Chemistry and Dyeing for 24 years. During this time, he published articles in almost all of the textile trade journals in the United States. He was a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and the American Institute of Chemists. In 1948, The N.C. State College Chapter of Delta Kappa Phi presented a large portrait of Grimshaw to the School of Textiles. Less

The Alexander Quarles Holladay Papers consist of photographs, letters, a speech, a notebook, a memory book, and a certificate of Holladay's Civil War military commission. The memory book is from Holladay's final year as a student at the University of Virginia. The speech given at the presentation of his portrait provides a genealogy dating to 1702. Some photographs of Shakespearean engravings are included. Other materials relate to Holladay's tenure as the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and include a "Book of Incidental Expenses" kept by Holladay during the first year, 1889-1890. The published books are items that had been in the Holladay family. Alexander Quarles Holladay (1839-1909) was a Civil War veteran, lawyer, educator, Virginia state senator, and college president. He was named the first president of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) upon its opening in 1889 and remained so for ten years until his retirement in 1899. Educational publications, advertisements, informational pamphlets, correspondence, subscription forms and ephemera related to animal rights and animal welfare, especially anti-vivisection. This collection appears to originate from the West of England, with a particular focus on the Manchester area. However, the collection also contains material from throughout the United Kingdom and a few materials from the United States. Most of the material was produced and distributed by organizations such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, the Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society, the League for the Prohibition of Cruel Sports, National Society for the Abolition of Cruel Sports, the Victoria Street Society for the Abolition of Vivisection, and others. Also included are Catholic, Quaker, and other religious pamphlets. The collection contains items written by Frances Power Cobbe, Henry Stephens Salt, H. E. Bates, George Bernard Shaw, and H. G. Wells. Members of the Bloomsbury Group, including Virginia Woolf and Clive Bell who are listed as subscribers to some groups, are represented here. There is also material related to and designed by cartoonist and animal rights activist Cyril Kenneth Bird, who went by the pen name 'Fougasse.' The material ranges in date from the 1870s to the 1950s and includes a quantity of material from the interwar period and the era surrounding and following World War II. Although anti-vivisection and animal rights were a concern in the United Kingdom as early as the eighteenth century, the first anti-cruelty law, "The Animal Protection Act" was passed in 1822, outlawing cruelty to cattle, horses, and sheep. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Anmials was formed two years later and had the distinction of being the first animal welfare society in the world, as well as the first law enforcement agency in the United Kingdom. In 1840, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals received the support of Queen Victoria and adopted the name the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Anti-vivisection movements increased in response to an increase in scientific and medical experimentation with mammals in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Despite the commonly held belief that animal rights reemerged as a primary concern in the 1970s, groups advocating for the rights and well-being of animals continued from the nineteeth century into the era following World War II with little stagnation. The Arnold Arluke Collection of Animal Protection Printed Materials contains "Our Dumb Animals" journals, booklets, legal papers, letters and cards realted to animal rights and animal welfare. The collection ranges in date from 1876 to 1966. Arnold Arluke is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Northeastern University. He is a senior scholar at the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy. His research areas include, but are not limited to, human-animal relations, social psychology, and visual studies. Arluke has published more than 100 articles and 12 books regarding human-animal relations. Less

This collection contains an article from Scientific American about the Bickford Family Knitting Machine. It dates to June 10, 1871. The Bickford Family Knitting Machine, patented in September 1867, allowed everyday users to knit items such as mats, shawls, trimmings, and blankets with relative ease, reduced time, and little advanced skill. It was also easy to transport and made very little noise. They were produced by the Bickford Knitting Machine Manufacturing Company of Brattleboro, Vermont. The Bernard Unti Book and Ephemera Collection on Animal Studies contains books, pamphlets, ephemera, and material culture objects tied to the history of the kindness-to-animals ethic, organized animal protection, vegetarianism, anti-vivisection and related concerns. The majority of the collection is comprised of books with many dating to the 1800s and early 20th Century. Bernard Unti, Ph.D., is an animal rights and welfare advocate who served as Senior Policy Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) from 2004 to 2021. Unti was then hired as Senior Principal Strategist in Communications for the HSUS. Unti is the author of Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States (2004), which covers the history of the HSUS from its creation to the early twentieth century. Unti has also written a number of essays and articles on animal cruelty as a historical and contemporary issue. In addition to working for the HSUS and Humane Society International, he worked at the Animal Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) in various positions from 1985 to 1992, including the position of Executive Director. These papers represent B. W. (Bertram Whittier) Wells's research interests, publications, and honors as well as Wells's personal life and pursuits, his first wife, Edna Metz Wells, his second wife, Maude Barnes Wells, and his household at Rockcliff Farm, a property on the Neuse River in North Carolina that Wells acquired before his retirement in 1954. In writing his biography of Wells, Prof. James R. Troyer amassed the majority of the materials comprising series 1 of these papers. Series 2 is composed of papers left behind by B. W. and Maude Barnes Wells at Rockcliff Farm, now part of the Falls Lake State Recreation Area in Wake Forest, North Carolina. A third series, Additional Artifacts and Books, has been added to the collection since the conclusion of an exhibit on Wells in 2007. Bertram Whittier Wells is most widely known for his study and preservation of North Carolina's natural environment. Wells headed North Carolina State College's (later North Carolina State University) Botany Department from 1919 to 1949 and remained on the faculty until 1954. One of the first to rightly be called an ecologist, he wrote on many topics: the insect galls of plants, the effects of salt on coastal vegetation, Bald Head Island, and the formation of the Carolina Bays. However, his most extensive work focused on savannah and pocosin vegetation. First published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1932, Wells's popular book, The Natural Gardens of North Carolina, remains in print. Wells also advocated for modern scientific instruction methods, including the teaching of evolution in the 1920s. During Wells's long retirement, he became seriously interested in painting. Less

The Black River Grange minute book photocopy is a copy of the minutes taken at Black River Grange meetings from the Grange's first meeting on 1874 March 24 until 1877. In addition to meeting notes, the pages also include doodles, scribbles, and math problems. Some ledger pages are also present. Established in 1874, the Black River Grange is the Sampson County chapter of the North Carolina State Grange, a grassroots civic organization dedicated to the improvement of farm and rural living. Cannon family of Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina. Family members include William F. Cannon, Peter F. Cannon, and Julius A. Cannon. The 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 United States censuses all list a Cannon family in McDowell County, and it is possible that it is the one this material corresponds to. The Cannon Family Papers contain account books, a scrapbook, papers from the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, tax records, a mathematics practice notebook, an owner's manual for a mower, and clippings of advertisements. The materials belonged to William F. Cannon, Peter F. Cannon, Julius A. Cannon, and other members of the Cannon family. They range in date from approximately 1839 to 1951. Less

This collection contains architectural drawings collected from various sources by Catherine W. Bishir during her research. Some were acquired for a study of Art Deco architecture in North Carolina. The drawings are mostly blueprints or other reproductions, and they date from 1871 to 1996, although most are from the early twentieth century. Catherine W. Bishir joined the NC State University Libraries in February 2007 as Curator of Architecture Special Collections. She has had a long career in historic preservation, serving as senior architectural historian for Preservation North Carolina, senior architectural historian and architectural survey coordinator for the State Historic Preservation Office in the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, and adjunct professor in NC State’s School of Architecture. She was a co-founder of the Vernacular Architectural Forum. Her publications include Architects and Builders in North Carolina and North Carolina Architecture. The Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright Papers, 1767-1990, include correspondence, photographs, research notes, transcriptions, and blueprints. Material was gathered by Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright for her study of the practice of building in North Carolina between 1865 and 1945 and includes information on the administration of the grant project, photographs and manuscripts from the book written by Brown, as well as research and reference files used in the project. The Claire Necker Papers contain notes, drafts, compilations of images, clippings, artifacts, and publications relating to Necker's research interests on cats. The writings and illustrations in the collection includes notes and drafts as well as illustrations Necker compiled during research for publications. There are numerous notebooks listing publications. Additionally, there is artwork and artifacts relating to cats or other animals. The correspondence series is fairly short with mostly letters to Necker. A portion of the correspondence is with Guy Bogart, who traded lengthy typed letters with Necker and two other correspondents. Much of the material is undated, but likely dates from the 1960s-1980s with some clippings dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, or earlier. Claire Kral Necker was born Claire Kral Nemec on 16 October 1917. In 1939 she married Walter L. Necker, who was then completing a BS in zoology at the University of Chicago. She and Walter shared interests in science and bibliography. Walter worked with a variety of organizations as, at various times, scientist, librarian, curator and rare books cataloger. Claire earned Master's degrees in Zoology and Chemistry (when and where is not documented, though it was sometime before 1968), and after World War II she and Walter started Aardvark Books, a mail-order antiquarian book business. Claire and Walter divorced in 1968, and she found work at a local library. Claire had for some time pursued a career as a free-lance writer, but in 1969 she published her first book, Cats and Dogs (A. S. Barnes). Necker's other works include The Natural History of Cats (Delta, 1970), Supernatural Cats; An Anthology (Doubleday, 1972), Four Centuries of Cat Books (Scarecrow Press, 1972), and The Cat's Got Our Tongue (Scarecrow Press, 1973). She died 19 March 2010 in Pawling, New York. Less

The Clyde F. Smith Papers contain literature, reprints, articles and books primarily pertaining to the insect family Aphididae, of the Order Homoptera. Two books, Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World (1972) and An Annotated List of Aphididae (Homoptera) of North America (1978) are indexes of the papers. Research materials consist of literature by noted authors from around the world who study aphids, their life cycles, reproduction variables, climate conditions, host plants and biological and chemical control. This collection is an extension of the Zeno Metcalf Collection. Also included are index cards on various Aphididae, which include an annotated generic and specific index to all literature cited in Smith's 1972 Bibliography of the Aphididae of the World, a host plant index indicating the aphids associated with each host and the source citing this association, and an index of aphid-parasitoids associations. Clyde F. Smith joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College Entomology Department in September 1939. He served as Head of N.C. State's Entomology Department from 1950 to 1964. Smith received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural College). He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1939. In 1972-1973, Smith served as president of the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America. Less

The records of the Council Tool Company document the history and operation of the North Carolina-based company from its founding by John Pickett Council in 1886 to the end of the twentieth century. The collection contains the company’s correspondence, financial records, and materials relating to personnel, plant operations, and merchandise. This collection also contains papers of the Council family spanning several generations, beginning in the early 1800s and with a few items from the 18th century. Correspondence, invoices, order letters, bills of lading, and related materials relate to the company’s operations including manufacturing, sales, transportation, information requests, and clientele. Financial records include accounting records, tax records, correspondence with accountants, records from the fire of October 20, 1970, and records relating to stocks. Accounting records include account books (ledgers), day books, trial balances, annual reviews of the company, and payroll ledgers. Office Files contain various information about the Council Tool Company and its operations, including correspondence, personnel files, catalogs and product information, machinery and equipment, inventories, notes and memoranda, and information about labor unions, insurance, and board meetings. Also included with the business records are files on the pulpwood industry, test hacks with accompanying reports, and maps and drawings. The family papers contain correspondence, financial records, and legal documents belonging to family members, including K. K. Council, John Pickett Council, K. Clyde Council, Edward L. Council, and Louise Council and a poem by Kinchin B. Council. Deeds and land grants, as well as correspondence about estates and property, constitute a substantial portion of the family papers. Council Tool Company is a family owned and operated business based in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1886 by John Pickett Council, a turpentine producer and farmer in Bladen County, North Carolina. The company’s earliest product line featured tools used in the naval stores industry. When the naval stores industry began to wane, the company reacted by diversifying its product line. The company grew during the early decades of the twentieth century, surviving the Great Depression, two World Wars, and a devastating fire that destroyed much of the manufacturing plant. As of 2015, the company's full line of professional products included axes, picks, mauls, mattocks, striking tools, shrubbing tools, digging tools, wood-splitting tools, forged bars, C-clamps and a variety of specialty tools. The company has always been headed by a Council, and as of 2015, the president is John M. Council III. Less

The Dan U. Gerstel Papers contains numerous scientific publications on a variety of topics related to the study of genetics, cytology, plant pathology, and crop science, collected by Dan U. Gerstel during his career as a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University and in the genetics department of the Weizmann Institute of Science (Mekhon Vaitsman le-mada) in Rehovot, Israel. The material is international in scope and covers a period of six decades. In addition to scientific publications, the collection contains personal and professional correspondence, a diary, genealogical research materials, newspaper clippings, and articles related to stamp collecting. Cytogeneticist Dan U. Gerstel, Ph.D., served as a professor of crop science at North Carolina State University, 1950-1980. He specialized in the study of tobacco and cotton. Less

The Daniel William Greenlee Journals document the life of a plantation owner in western North Carolina during the Reconstruction era and into the post-Reconstruction era. The journals span January 1st, 1874-March 23rd, 1891 with two gaps in coverage: January 6th, 1881-April 26th 1883 and April 13th 1884-February 15th 1885. His journals comment chiefly on the weather, a variety of farming and business activities, social visits to neighbors and relatives, and his personal and religious thoughts. Daniel William Greenlee resided on the family's Burke County (present-day McDowell County) plantation, called Turkey Cove, in close proximity to his father, brother, sister, and aunt. He raised a variety of crops, such as wheat and corn, as well as hogs and cattle. Less

The David Stathem Weaver Papers include materials documenting Weaver's career in agriculture, his tenure at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in the Department of Agricultural Engineering, his work in the Agricultural Extension Service, his role in promoting rural electrifcation, and his dedication to the improvement of the farm community. The collection includes speeches, correspondence, clippings, documents, photographs, and scrapbooks, from 1918 through 1966. Also included is an 1862 Civil War letter written by Weaver's maternal grandfather, David Stathem. David Stathem Weaver (1896-1966) was an agricultural engineer, educator, and administrator. Weaver was professor, then department head of the Agricultural Engineering Department at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University), 1923-1948. He was principal engineer, 1936-1937, for the Rural Electrification Administration in Washington, D.C., where he continued work that he had already begun in North Carolina. Weaver was also specialist in agricultural extension, 1937-1948, and associate director, 1948-1950, then director, 1950-1961, of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. Less
