Upchurch regarding the founding of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and a graduation address made by Daniels for Naval Ensigns in Engineering at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1943. Josephus Daniels was editor and publisher of the Raleigh News and Observer, Secretary of the Navy (1913-1921), Ambassador to Mexico (1933-1942), and member of the Watauga Club. Daniels had strong ties to white supremacy (including promoting the disenfranchisement of African Americans from the political process), and he played a leading role in the 1898 Wilmington coup, also known as the Wilmington massacre.
