The photographer is unknown. The depicted parking lot later became Cates Ave. The photo shows the view to the west, and in the distance are some of the Vetville married housing unit. North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College), and the College opened in 1889. In 1917, the institution's name was changed to North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (State College). In 1931, it became a part of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. In 1965 the name changed to North Carolina State University, and since 1972 it has been one of the constituent institutions of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system.
