The M. Edmund Aycock Papers contain programs, membership lists, educational resources, publications, correspondence and other materials related to the history of North Carolina's 4-H program. As a North Carolina youth, M. Edmund Aycock (1912–2009) belonged to 4-H clubs during the 1920s. He later studied at the University of North Carolina (1929-1933) and North Carolina State University (1933-1936). After working as a county Cooperative Extension agent, he worked at Wachovia Bank and also served as a chairman of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. Aycock was actively involved in the 4-H Youth Development program throughout his life and founded the Edmund & Elizabeth Aycock Scholarship. This scholarship awards $1000 to a high school senior who participates in 4-H. For his 80 years of service to North Carolina 4-H, he was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. North Carolina 4-H Development Fund Records contain annual reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial statements, and budget memos related to the North Carolina 4-H development Fund. It also includes an electronic file of Larry and Joyce Bass 4-H Horticultural Awards Endowment Brochure. The NC 4-H Development Fund was created to acquire funds that support 4-H Youth Development Programs in North Carolina and increase its effectiveness and efficiency. It acquires funds and gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. 4-H, in turn, is a community of some 261,000 young people across America. In these programs, kids and teens are engaged in hands-on projects related to agriculture, health, science, and civic education while receiving guidance from adult mentors. Participants learn public speaking, decision-making, teamwork, communication, and other important skills. Not only do they develop new skills, they also learn how to become proactive leaders. The Chinqua-Penn Plantation records contain the papers of the Penn family (1863-1975, bulk 1923-1946) as well as the records of the management of the property by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, North Carolina State University, and the Chinqua-Penn Foundation (1921-1926, 1957-2002, bulk 1965-2002). This collection includes correspondence, reports, financial records, property and animal records, architectural drawings, photographs and scrapbooks, audio-visual materials, newspaper clippings, marketing materials, and inventories of the art, artifacts, and furniture collections, among other items. Within the materials dating from the management period are extensive records from research conducted on the property and the Penn family. Named for the chinquapin, a dwarf chestnut tree, Chinqua-Penn Plantation was built by Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Penn and Margaret Beatrice "Betsy" Schoellkopf (Schwill) Penn during the 1920s. The large house reflected their lifestyle of entertaining and traveling, and it showcased the art and furniture they collected from around the world. The plantation's grounds evolved into an exotic horticultural collection of both native and imported plants. Chinqua-Penn was maintained by the University of North Carolina, Greensboro from 1965 to the late 1980s. NC State University took over its management and reopened it shortly thereafter. In 1991, the Chinqua-Penn Foundation was formed to preserve the house and open it to visitors. The foundation secured the plantation's status as a National Historic Landmark. Although NC State University continues to administer the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center on the mansion grounds, further funding problems forced the foundation to close the museum's doors.
