Born in Augusta, Maine, in 1952, Laux worked various jobs as a sanatorium cook, gas station manager, and housekeeper before returning to college and pursuing a career in creative writing. After receiving a bachelor's in English at Mills College in 1988, Laux published several works and taught creative writing at the University of Oregon from 1994 to 2008.

This series contains personal materials Laux collected throughout her life. Chiefly notebooks from her time at Mills College; photographs; calendars and daily planners; writings about Laux: and correspondence spanning decades, which include letter, emails, and postcards from fans, colleagues, friends, and family. This series also contains materials related to friends and colleagues, such as poets Jane Hirshfield, Joe Millar, Kim Addonizio, Philip Levine, and Sharon Olds
This series reflects Laux's over decades-long career as a poet and public literary figure. Materials in this series relate to her live poetry readings; literary conferences, festivals, and workshops; and awards and fellowships, such as the Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts. This series also contains materials relating to her relationships with various literary publishers, such as BOA Editions Ltd and W.W. Norton & Company.
The bulk of this series contains Laux's writings that were published in anthologies, journals, poetry reviews, and workshop materials. Her work has appeared in notable publications such as the American Poetry Review, American Five Points, Kenyon Review, Ms., Orion, Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, and Southern Review, among others. The remainder of the series includes manuscripts, drafts, and editorial copies of her published works, such as Facts About the Moon and Awake. The series ranges in date from 1985 to 2019.
