Michael Loomis Papers 1977-2018

Dr. Michael Loomis served 30 years as the Chief Veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoo, and retired in 2016. During his tenure. Loomis oversaw the division that provides all veterinary medical care for the Zoo’s animal collections. Dr. Loomis received his Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis, and received his master's degree in zoology from Indiana University.

Dr. Loomis developed an elephant conservation project in Cameroon, Africa. He launched this project in 1998. The project’s goals are to determine elephant land use patterns as well to evaluate human-elephant interactions around several of Cameroon’s national parks.

Dr. Loomis is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Zoological Medicine at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (as of 2018). He has served as president of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians and of the American College of Zoological Medicine.

This collection contains materials related to Dr. Loomis's elephant conservation project in Korup, Cameroon. It also contains North Carolina Zoological Park Anesthesia Records, zoological reports and publications, correspondence, and documents relating to the American College of Zoological Medicine.
