The C. H. Kirkman Papers contains pamphlets, instructional guides, training manuals, reports, monthly newsletters, conferences, member communications, and Farmer Cooperatives Service (FCS) information and educational aids, and Cooperative Information Reports (CIR), and other items related to cooperatives and extension services from 1958 to 1985.

Clark Harrison Kirkman (1920-2007) worked in agricultural extension in North Carolina, as director of member relations for Farmers Cooperative Exchange (FCX) in Raleigh, North Carolina, and as a Cooperative Education Specialist with United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. Kirkman taught hundreds of workshops and training sessions on cooperatives across the United States, developed more than 55 publications of unique educational materials on cooperatives, worked with a broad network of professionals and organizations in support of cooperatives, and was instrumental in developing public/private partnerships to document the value of cooperatives in rural and community development.

Biographical/historical note

Clark Harrison Kirkman (1920-2007) worked in agricultural extension in North Carolina, as director of member relations for Farmers Cooperative Exchange (FCX) in Raleigh, North Carolina, and as a Cooperative Education Specialist with United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. Kirkman taught hundreds of workshops and training sessions on cooperatives across the United States, developed more than 55 publications of unique educational materials on cooperatives, worked with a broad network of professionals and organizations in support of cooperatives, and was instrumental in developing public/private partnerships to document the value of cooperatives in rural and community development.

For the first 18 years of his career, Kirkman served as assistant county agent or county extension chair in seven different North Carolina counties, working in rural areas on organizing watersheds, farm planning, farmer education, 4-H club activities including national sheep shearing championship teams, and developing the first integrated budget for the North Carolina State Extension Service at the county level. In 1961, he became director of member relations for Farmers Cooperative Exchange (FCX) in Raleigh, North Carolina and in 1967, he became a Cooperative Education Specialist with United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1983.

National recognition of Kirkman's work culminated in 1994 when a partnership of the District of Columbia, the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA), and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) established at University of the District of Colombia the C. H. Kirkman, Jr. Resource Library for Cooperatives in his honor. The Library exemplifies Mr. Kirkman’s life philosophy of education, commitment, character and cooperation. He received numerous other special awards and honors in recognition of his achievements, including the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the State of North Carolina.

Clark Harrison Kirkman (1920-2007) was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, on February 23, 1920. He received his Bachelors in Agriculture at North Carolina State University in 1941 and Masters of Science in 1957. Mr. Kirkman served in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from 1944 to 1946.Mr. Kirkman died November 7, 2007 at Glenaire Retirement Center in Cary, North Carolina. He was 87 years old.

Kirkman Papers contains pamphlets, instructional guides, training manuals, reports, monthly newsletters, conferences, member communications, and Farmer Cooperatives Service (FCS) information and educational aids, and Cooperative Information Reports (CIR), and other items related to cooperatives and extension services from 1958 to 1985.
