Why does the link at the top of the Libraries' website always say "Log Out?"

The "Log Out" link at the top right of the Libraries' website (in the grey bar) says "Log Out" if you are logged in, but it also says "Log Out" if you are already logged out. That's weird; we know. The "Log Out" link logs you out of Shibboleth at NC State and all of these Libraries services:

  • Catalog ("Books & Media").
  • My Account.
  • Course Reserve.
  • Reserve a Room.
  • Tripsaver.

Those services are on different servers — shib.ncsu.edu, catalog.lib.ncsu.edu, myaccount.lib., reserves.lib, rooms.lib, and tripsaver.lib. If we could detect active / logged in sessions across all those servers, then we could offer a link that varies between "Log In" and "Log out." Unfortunately, we cannot because one server cannot detect sessions on any other server. Instead we offer a permanent "Log Out" link that logs you out of all of the services listed above.

The Libraries' "Log Out" link does not log you out of other NC State services such as Moodle or MyPack Portal.

The "Log Out" link is particularly useful when using a shared computer at one of our libraries.
