About This Event

How Numbers Can Mislead (and how to avoid being misled)

Whether we're hearing about election forecasts or crowd size estimates, many of us feel increasingly distrustful of numbers. And yet citizens rarely have the skills they need to actually check the numbers they’re hearing. Instead, they’re left with a dangerously simplistic question: “Do I trust the source?”.

Data visualization can help - as long as it’s honest and inclusive. Honest data visualization communicates the imprecision of numbers. And inclusive data visualization doesn’t just provide answers - it encourages people to ask questions. In this special presentation of Coffee & Viz, Chalabi will be talking about ways to make data visualizations that fulfill both of those criteria and help rebuild the public’s trust in numbers and facts.

Mona Chalabi is considered one of the most influential people in the young field of data journalism. Often drawing data visualizations by hand, her approach is accessible and inspiring. Chalabi is currently data editor at Guardian US. She previously worked at FiveThirtyEight, the Bank of England, the Economist Intelligence Unit, Transparency International, and the International Organisation for Migration.
