Color blindness affects 13 million Americans and 350 million people worldwide. The relatively common disability affects an estimated 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women. That means that an estimated 1,530 students at NC State and 425 faculty and staff are color blind.

Color blindness has a major impact on learning
Color blindness hinders learning in school, from K-12 through higher learning. Think of the color-coding of information on maps or in charts and graphs in practically every textbook and slide presentation you’ve seen in class.

From a 2020 EnChroma survey of 1,000 color blind people:

  • 78% said they were often frustrated or confused by colors in school assignments and activities
  • 1 in 3 say color blindness affected their confidence in school
  • 30% felt like they might be a “slow learner” before discovering they were color blind

Only 11 of 50 states test for color blindness. As a result, many students do not realize they’re color blind. Nearly half of color blind people said they didn’t learn they were color blind until after 7th grade—and some as late as in high school or even college.

NC State has resources to help with color blindness!
