A native of Durham, N.C., Wheless graduated in landscape architecture in 1967 from the North Carolina State University School (now College) of Design. He worked for Lewis Clarke while still in school. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Connecticut to work with A.E. Bye. Eventually, he helped organize Environmental Design Associates in which he was a principle for over forty years before retiring back to Durham. A project of personal note is the first bio-field application in a design for Vanfer Properties in Connecticut.
