ASSOCIATE HEAD AND CURATOR,

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS RESEARCH CENTER

 

The NCSU Libraries has a well-earned reputation for creating adventurous library spaces and innovative services that delight today’s students and researchers. The D. H. Hill Library combines the best of tradition and innovation, housing special collections and a beautiful gallery alongside vibrant, experiential spaces such as the Learning Commons and Technology Sandbox. Soon we will open a magnificent new library that promises to be nothing less than the best learning and collaborative space in the country. Located on NC State’s Centennial Campus, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library will be an iconic space, a place where people gather to explore new ways to research, learn, experiment, collaborate, and affect the world. Designed as a working incubator for educational technology, the Hunt Library will serve as a second “main library,” complementing the D. H. Hill Library, with services focused on the Centennial Campus community. The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Head and Curator, Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) to join an innovative, multidimensional special collections program in support of research and teaching at the University. The Center has distinctive and relevant collections, including digital collections, that reflect areas of strength of the university, such as engineering, architecture and design, and computer science. The Center’s public service initiatives are designed to continuously improve and integrate the use of primary resources in teaching and learning.

Responsibilities

The Associate Head and Curator:

• Leads collaborative, strategic collection development initiatives for primary source material in all media, rare book, and born digital collections

• Participates in setting priorities for collections processing and digitization

• Works with Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) counterparts to further historically strong cooperative special collections development programs

• Plans and delivers a strong outreach program, including tours, lectures, and class visits to the NCSU community

• Develops and manages SCRC Public Services programs and staff

•Contributes to grant-writing and fundraising initiatives, and to donor relations and stewardship

• Serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams

• Represents the SCRC in the absence of the department head

NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of the Special Collections Research Center

Required qualifications:

• ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in a relevant field

• Relevant professional experience with collecting and managing special collections

• Proven record of effective collaboration with students, faculty, and researchers

• Knowledge of current and emerging technologies that support the development of digital collections

• Demonstrated understanding of the scholarly communication process

• Ability to cultivate and maintain effective relations with donors

• Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills

• Ability to work effectively as a team member and to promote teamwork among colleagues; ability to work independently with initiative

• Capacity to thrive in an exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment and to respond with agility to changing needs and priorities

Preferred qualifications:

• Background in the History of Engineering and/or Science, scientific research, or scientific data curation

• Supervisory experience

 

The Libraries, the University, and the Area

The NCSU Libraries and its staff have won numerous awards, including the first Association of College and Research Libraries’ Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, Library Journal’s Librarian of the Year, Paraprofessional of the Year, and six Movers and Shakers awards. The library system currently consists of the D. H. Hill Library and branch libraries for design, natural resources, textiles, and veterinary medicine, with the James B. Hunt Jr. Library opening soon. With a staff of 260+ FTE, the Libraries has more than 4.4 million volumes in its collection, acquires more than 62,000 print and electronic serials, and has a total annual budget of over $25 million, with approximately $9.5 million allocated to collections. Salary and Benefits

The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include:  24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
