The NC-CGIA developed the digital GIS Wild and Scenic Rivers data set from the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System website information (http://www.rivers.gov). The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act established a method for providing Federal protection for certain of our country's remaining free-flowing rivers, preserving them and their immediate environments for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Rivers are included in the system so that they may benefit from the protective management and control of development for which the Act provides.
This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

Arcs were extracted from CGIA's hydrography database using the wild and scenic rivers descriptions on the following website: www.nps.gov/rivers/wildrivers.list.html#nc
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for point topology using the "build" command. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
These data represent the wild and scenic rivers in North Carolina. The data layer is current to the www.nps.gov/rivers website as of December 3, 2004.
Hydrography 1:100,000-scale features were taken from the USGS 1:100,000-scale DLGs. Supplemented hydrographic features were digitized from 1:24,000-scale bases and the linework checked against the bases to within a linewidth.
